And its interesting because they are not the same in every country. In England, Mothering Sunday is in March. In America and Germany and other countries, its one Sunday in May. Fathers Day is in the middle of June. How do you celebrate Mothers Day and Fathers Day? Lets learn something more about it from the following introduction. In England, we call Mothers Day Mothering Sunday, because its always on a Sunday. I dont really know the origin of it but I remember that my mother had a cup of tea early in the morning. And then we would go to church. And at the end of the church service, the children would collect a daffodil (水仙花 ) and take it back and give it to our mother who would normally be sitting in the service in the church. And really thats all we did to celebrate the day. As Ann said, I remember taking cups of tea to my mother. The idea in general is that the washing-up would be done; perhaps some cooking would be done on Mothers Day. We would try to relieve her of all those jobs to make it a special day for her, so that whenever she looked around, there was something to eat, something to drink, or something to read, or something interesting for her to do. Fathers Day is always in June, a Sunday in the middle of June. On Fathers Day, the idea is to find something fun that the children could do with their father together. I remember going to baseball games. I think that on Fathers Day its particularly focused on doing things together because that is supposed to be relaxing and fun for Dad. 47. In , Mothering Sunday is in March. A. Germany B. England C. America D. China 48. Ann remembered that her mother in the morning on Mothering Sunday. A. had a cup of tea B. got up late C. collected a daffodil D. had something to eat 49. What did Bill remember doing on Fathers Day? A. Doing housework. B. Eating outside. C. Going to the church. D. How to understand Mothers Day and Fathers Day. (B) Ever since I was a child, my mouth has caused me trouble. Im not a bad person; I have a hard time learning when to keep my mouth closed. My mom has told me again and again, “Robert, your constant bad words are hurting me. If you continue to be this rude, you will get into big trouble.” Its been a problem at school several times too when teachers have told me something I didnt want to hear. I used to feel it was my duty to stand up for myself. One day in English class I began working on my homework until I heard a classmate talking behind me. It was Nathaniel, talking to himself as usual. I said ever so nicely, “Nathaniel, would you be quiet?” Nathaniel continued talking to himself. I quickly shouted “Nathaniel, shut up!” For the next five minutes, we threw hurtful words back and forth at each other. “At least I dont have an ugly lazy eye like you!” I shouted. I knew this would upset him deep inside. It would hurt his feelings and shut him up. What I said filled him with anger. He tried to reach over my seat and grab me as he shouted, “Thats it! Thats it!” Surprised at his reaction, I sat back in my seat. Never had I seen Nathaniel act like this before. Later on, we were taken to the principals office. There, Mr. Black, the principal, told us to discuss the matter. It wasnt until then that I finally found that when I hurt someone physically, the wounds eventually heal. But when I hurt them with my words, sometimes the pain (痛苦 ) never goes away. At the end of the discussion, I said sorry to Nathaniel. When I headed back to my room, I spent some time praying. I began to think about how often what I said hurt others. But I believe that as I keep praying and asking God to help me, hell tell me when to keep my mouth closed. 51. Whats the writers name? A. Nathaniel. B. Robert. C. Black. D. Green. 52. One day in English class, Nathaniel when the other classmates worked on their homework. A. read the text B. listened to the others C. talked to himself D. kept silent 53. Whats the Chinese meaning of the underlined word heal? A. 愈合 B. 痛苦 C. 和好 D. 傷害 54. In the text the writer tried to tell us that . A. when you hurt someone, the pain never goes away B. we should try to help each other at school C. it is ones duty to stand up for himself D. words cause more pain than wounds (C) Over the last 70 years, researchers have been studying happy and unhappy people and finally found out ten factors that make a difference. Our feelings of well-being at any moment are decided to a certain degree by genes. However, of all the factors, wealth and age are the top two. Money can buy a degree of happiness. But once you can afford to feed, clothe and house yourself, each extra dollar makes less and less difference. Researchers find that, on average, wealthier people are happier. But the link between money and happiness is complex(復(fù)雜的 ). In the past half-century, the average income (平均收入 ) has sharply increased in developed countries, yet happiness levels have remained almost the same. Once your basic needs are met, money only seems to increase happiness if you have more than your friends, neighbors and colleagues. “Dollars buy status (social position), and status makes people feel better,” say some experts, which helps explain why people who can seek status in other ways, scientists or actors, for example, may happily accept relatively poorly-paid jobs. In a research, Professor Alex Michalos found that the people whose desires (欲望 ), not just for money, but for friends, family, job, health, rose furthest beyond what they already had, tended to be less happy than those who felt a smaller gap (差距 ). Indeed, the size of the gap predicted happiness about five times better than income alone. “The gap measures just blow away the measures of only income.” says Michalos. Another factor that has to do with happiness is age. Old age may not be so bad “Given all the problems of aging, how could the elderly be more satisfied?” asks Professor Laura Carstensen. In one survey, Carstensen interviewed 184 people between the ages of 18 and 94, and asked them to fill out an emotion questionnaire. She found that old people reported positive emotions just as often as young people. Some scientists suggest older people may expect life to be harder and learn to live with it, or theyre more realistic about their time running out. Older people have learned to focus on things that make them happy and let go of those that dont. “People realize not only what they have, but also that what they have cannot last forever,” she says. “A goodbye kiss to a husband or wife at the age of 85, for example, may bring far more complex emotional responses than a similar kiss to a boy or girl friend at the age of 20.” 55. Some actors would like to accept poorly-paid jobs because the jobs . A. make them feel much better B. provide chances to make friends C. improve their social position D. satisfy their professional interests 56. Professor Alex Michalos found that people feel less happy if . A. the gap between reality and desire is bigger B. they have a stronger desire for friendship C. the hope for good health is much greater D. their income is far below their expectation 57. We can infer from the passage that older people . A. would like to have more goodbye kisses than young people B. are used to living a hard life because they are kind to others C. express their positive opinions just as some young people do D. find it easier to feel happy because they are more realistic 58. According to the passage, the feeling of happiness . A. increases gradually with age B. is controlled partly by desires C. has little to do with wealth D. is decided mostly by genes 第卷(非選擇題 共 50分) 六、聽(tīng)下面一段短文,記錄關(guān)鍵信息。 (共 8分,每小題 2分 ) FM 1180 Free 59. tickets. It became popular twenty years ago and has remained a favorite way of keeping fit for lots of people. One of the main advantages of jogging over many other sports is that it can be done anywhere. People jog in parks, in the countryside and even in urban areas. No special equipment is requiredno costly hats, or balls, and no expensive sports kit. Good quality running shoes are advisable. Special jogging suits are widely available these days and can be bought quite cheaply but are not necessary. In addition to being able to jog anywhere, you can also jog at any time, in any season! Its not unusual to see joggers exercising in the height of summer or in the depth of winter! The act of jogging doesnt require any special training or skill. You do need to be basically healthy and then, after a few basic warm-up bends and stretches, you are ready to begin. You simply start running, gently, and then build up to a steady speed. Do not over-tire yourself by trying to go too fast. Its best for you to run at a steady and comfortable speed. Jogging is a single sport. You dont need to wait until you have gathered a team or found a partner. You can jog alone. A few words of warning however: lone women joggers should be especially careful to choose jogging routes, particularly at night time. Jogging is excellent for keeping fit. Its good for the lungs, the heart and the circulation. Its easy and its convenient. Why dont you try it? If you require more information, talk to one of the instructors at the sports centre. We are only too happy to help. Please remember: if you do decide to jog, talk to your doctor first if you have any health worries. Happy jogging! 75. Is jogging a good way of keeping fit? 76. Some people think the 7-day holiday is very important. Firstly, we could have a good rest and refresh ourselves after several months of hard work. Secondly, we could spend more time staying with our family. Thirdly, we will be able to use the one-week vacation to travel to some farther places such as foreign countries. However, other people hold the opposite view. They think it causes a lot of problems. It my lead to traffic jam and visitors will not enjoy themselves if the travelling spots are over-crowded.
