Type of lesson: Reading Lesson duration: 40 minutes Teaching Aids: ppt; Objectives:1. Instructional objectives By the end of the class, more than 95% students should be able to1) Recognize some new words and language chunks, such as, achievement, southwestern, take in, succeed, challenge and in the face of;2) Compare the comparative forms and the superlative forms, for example, the most dangerous sport, the most famous place, more serious, and stronger;3) Develop some reading strategies through reading, like predicting, skimming, scanning, inferring the meaning of new words in context and summarizing;4) Design a mind-map to get to know more about the reading material and relate the passage based on the mind-map;2. Educational objectives By the end of the class, about 85% students should be able to1) Talk about the natural geography in English;2) Learn to challenge themselves in the face of difficulties;3. Personal objectivesTeacher should be able to1) speak fluently and correctly to set a good example for students2) organize class effectively;Contents:1. Vocabulary:achieve, achievement, southwestern, freezing, thick, include, condition, force, nature, succeed, challenge, take in, in the face of, even though2. Grammar: comparative forms and superlative formsTopic: Reading: Qomolangma - the Most Dangerous Mountain in the World?Focal and Difficult Points:1. Students can learn the new words and language chunks, and talk about the natural geography;2. Students are able to use some reading strategies to understand the passage;ProceduresStep 1 GreetingPurpose: The teacher greets students to let them realize that class begins and make preparations for new class.Step 2 Free talk (2 minutes)Purpose: By talking about sports, which is related to their lives, to elicit the topic, the students will have good interest in it.Do you like to play sports?What sports do you like?Why?Which of the following sports do you think is the most dangerous: swimming, mountain climbing or basketball?What might be the danger of mountain climbing? (Show a picture of Qomolangma and talk about it and teach the new words) T: What do you think of Qomolangma? S: It is the highest mountain in the world. T: Do you think it is the most dangerous mountain in the world?S: YES!T: It has many dangers,including:.Teach students how to pronounce each new word,then enjoy the pictures and video of Qomolangma.Step 3 Pre-reading (2 minutes)Predicting Purpose: Let the students guess what things maybe talked about according to the title and the picture. T: Look at the picture and the title: Qomolangma - the Most Dangerous Mountain in the World? If you want to write an article with this title, what would you like to talk about?Step 4 While-readingPurpose: Design different tasks to train the reading skills and divide the passage into three paragraphs to lower the difficulty of reading. All of these are aimed at arousing the students interest in reading and in English. Task 1: Matching (1 minute) Purpose: Let the students read through each paragraph quickly (20 seconds for Para.1, 10 seconds for Para.2, and 15 seconds for Para.3), and match each paragraph with its main idea in order to train the reading skill - Skimming.Read each paragraph very quickly in the screen, and match each paragraph with the main ideas. Task2:Listen to the tape to learn more about this article,then write T or F.( T )1. It is very dangerous to climb Qomolangma. ( F )2. The first people to reach the top were Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1955. ( F )3. The first Chinese woman to succeed in climbing was in 1975. ( T )4. It shows that humans can sometimes be stronger than the forces of nature. T: According to the main ideas of the paragraphs, lets get to know more about the passage with this mind-map. Task 3: Q&A-Para.1 (3 minutes) Purpose: Let the students read Para.1, and answer some questions in order to train the reading skill - Scanning.Reading strategy - Scanning: Read the passage or the paragraph carefully to find specific information.Read the paragraph 1 and answer and finish the chart. Look at the chart ,ask students to retell this part.Task 4:Read paragraph 2 and fill in the chart. The chart includes:climbers,time,achievements.Invite ss to answer the question then ask them to use the information to retell this part.Task 5: Para.3 (3 minutes)Answer the questions:1. Why do so many people try to climb this mountain even though it is dangerous?2. What does the spirit of the climbers tell us?Task6: Lets challenge ourselves to read .Paragraph 1&3 and list comparisons(比較級和最高級) Step 5 Post-readingTask 8: Retelling (6 minutes)Purpose: Let the students make a general summary and retell the passage in groups based on the summary. Working in groups can lower down the difficulty of retelling.1. Make a summary (Whole class work).2. Work in groups, and fill in the blanks.The Himalayas r_ along the s_ part of China.
