(ferritethatformsbeforetheeutectoidreaction)andregionsofpearlite.TheAustenitetoferrite/cementitetransformationinrelationtoFe-CdiagramHyper-eutectoidsteels

(hypermeans"greaterthan")arethosethatcontainmorethantheeutectoidamountofCarbon.Whensuchasteelcools,asalonglinez-z',theprocessissimilartothehypo-eutectoidsteel,exceptthattheprimaryorpro-eutectoidphaseisnowcementiteinsteadofferrite.TheAustenitetoferrite/cementitetransformationinrelationtoFe-CdiagramAsthecarbon-richphasenucleatesandgrows,theremainingaustenitedecreasesincarboncontent,againreachingtheeutectoidcompositionat723°C.Thisaustenitetransformstopearliteuponslowcoolingthroughtheeutectoidtemperature.Theresultingstructureconsistsofprimarycementiteandpearlite.Thecontinuousnetworkofprimarycementitewillcausethematerialtobeextremelybrittle.TheAustenitetoferrite/cementitetransformationinrelationtoFe-CdiagramHypo-eutectoidsteelshowingprimarycementitealonggrainboundariespearliteTheAustenitetoferrite/cementitetransformationinrelationtoFe-CdiagramItshouldbenotedthatthetransitionsasdiscussed,areforequilibriumconditions,asaresultofslowcooling.Uponslowheatingthetransitionswilloccurinthereversemanner.TheAustenitetoferrite/cementitetransformationinrelationtoFe-CdiagramWhenthealloysarecooledrapidly,entirelydifferentresultsareobtained,sincesufficienttimemaynotbeprovidedforthenormalphase
