Thereareseveralpossiblecausesforsuchasituation:unsafesexualintercourse;sharingorreusing
contaminatedneedles;transfusionofcontaminatedbloodorbloodproducts;aninfectedperson's
pregnancy,givingbirthandbreastfeeding,etc.Unfortunately,ourignorance,prejudiceandsilence
havecarriedthesituationtoadesperateextreme.Patientsareisolatedortreatedasoutcastsby
theirfamiliesandtheircommunities.AIDSvictimsfeelashamedtobeidentifiedassuchandtry

youngadultsinChina.Whyhavesomanyyoungpeopleendedtheirlives?
Threefactorsarethoughttoaccountforthehighsuiciderate:increasingstress,lonelinessanda
lackofmedicalsupportfordepression.Themostpressingone,Ithink,isstress.Takemycollege
lifeforexample.FromthefirstdayIenteredtheuniversity,Ihavebeenlivingunderpressure.I
usedtoworrythatIcouldnotquitefitintothecampuslife;IalsofearedthatImightnotcatchup
withmyclassmatesinmystudiesorcouldnotliveuptomyparents?expectations.NowIam
deeplyconcernedaboutwhetherIcanfindadesirablejobaftergraduation.Endlesspressuresgive
