Program:TeenagerJuvenileDevelopmentalPsychology
Inmyundergraduateprogram,IreceivededucationacrosstwofieldsadegreeprograminlawattheLawSchoolofxUniversityandadegreeprograminpsychologyatxUniversity.Myrigorousacademictrainingsacrossthosetwofieldshavegivenmenecessaryqualificationsforpursuingamoreadvancedprogrameitherinpsychologyorinlaw,endowingmewithauniqueadvantageininterdisciplinaryknowledge.
AsfarasIamconcerned,lawandpsychologyarereciprocal.Theyallpertaintohumanbehavior.Asamatteroffact,mythesisinlaw,entitled"xX"exploresjuveniledelinquencybyexaminingtheplicatedpsychologicalfactorsoftheyoungergenerationofChinainfamily,schoolandneighborhoodsettings.However,thereareessentialdifferencesbetweenthem.Intermsofthecausalrelationshipsofhumanbehavior,lawisprimarilyconcernedwiththetreatmentoftheconsequencesofhumanbehaviorwhilepsychologyprobesintothemotivationsthatcausepeopletoactastheydo.Intheframeworkofhumanrelations,lawaimsatorderlyandwell-regulatedsocialrelationshipwhilepsychology,withitsinterventionsintotheprocessofhumandevelopment,seekstofacilitatethehealthydevelopmentoftheindividuals.
Whilelawandpsychologyarebothindispensabletotheproperfunctioningofoursociety,whenitestomakingachoicebetweenthosetwofieldsinwhichtopursueagraduateprogram,IdecidetooptforaprograminDevelopmentalPsychology.Mydecisionismotivatedbythefactthatlawcanonlydealwiththeaftermathofhumanbehaviorwhereaspsychologycanprovidepreventivemeasuresagainstpossiblenegativehumanbehavior.Childadolescentpsychology,afieldIaminterestedin,mayfacilitatethedevelopmentofhealthypersonalitystructurethatmayenablechildrenandadolescentsinteractwiththesocietyinaharmoniousmanner.
IhavereceivedsoundacademictrainingsthatastudentofpsychologycanexpectinChina,excellingparticularlyinDevelopmentalPsychology,CognitivePsychology,ExperimentalPsychologyandothercorecourses,allofwhichhaveimpartedtomethenecessarytheoreticalknowledge.My87/100GPAinPsychologyhasmademethetopstudentinmyclassandthewinnerofaseriesoftheuniversitystop-levelscholarships.Asanundergraduate,Ihaveattemptedatsometentativeresearchbysubmittingessaysandresearchpaperstoprovincial-levelanduniversity-leveljournals(pleaserefertomyResume).Inperformingthoseresearches,IfindthatIhavebenefitedconsiderablyfrommysolidmathematicsfoundationandtherelatedmethodologymyscorefortheAdvancedMathematicscourseis98/100whiletheSPSSwasnearlyfullmark.Ihavemasteredimportantstatisticalandquantitativemethods,puterprogrammingandLISRELwithmuchfacilityandIexcelindesigningexperimentsandpreparingquestionnaires.
IstartedtoperformformalacademicresearchattheDevelopmentalPsychologyLabinxUniversitytwoyearsbyworkingasaresearchassistanttoProf.x,aleadingChinesescholaronsocialdevelopmentinchildhoodandadolescenceandpeerrelations.Byfocusingonthepeerrelations,socialcognition,socialself-concept,attributions,andpastsocialexperiences,Ipletedafull-lengthresearchpaperx,whichbecameaposterpresentationatthex.Myresearchindicatesthatinadditiontomaintaininganappropriatelevelofsocialself-conceptandoptimisticattributionalstyle,itisessentiallyworthwhiletoemphasizeanothertwostrategiestoimprovethepositivepeernominations:topayspecialattentiontotheattributionstonegativeeventsofthelife,andtoattributesocialpopularityorsuccesstosomestablecauses.Basedonmydistinguishedacademicperformance,Iattendedthexandthex.
Offcampus,Ihaveworkedasasocialworkerofferingpsychologicalconsultingforthe"NoWorryTeenagers'columnfortheauthoritativejournalx,dealingwiththeproblemsconcerninginterpersonalrelationsandsocialcognitionofadolescentsandyoungadults.Thisexperienceallowedmetogaininsightintomanyimportantaspectsofthementallivesofthisgroupofpeoplebeyondthemerestatisticaldata.However,itisaregretthatmyknowledgeisinsufficienttoofferadequateconsultingservicetomyaudienceofsuchdiversebackgrounds.Thisfactrevealstometheneedtoundertakemoreadvancedstudiestoimprovemyprofessionalpetence.
Iamstronglyinterestedinthedevelopmentalpsychologyofadolescentsbecausebyhelpingadolescentsbuildupahealthypsychologythatmayenablethemtosuccessfullyintegrateintothepetitiveworldofadults,hencefewersocialproblemscouldbecreated.Inmyproposedprogram,Iwouldliketoconcentrateonthefollowingsubjects:socialcognitiveandsocial-emotionaldevelopmentinchildhoodandadolescence;peerrelationsandfamilyrelationsandtheirinfluenceondevelopment;resilienceinhighrisksettings;developmentofself-esteem;genderdifferencesandsimilarities,andresearchmethods.TheUniversityofxsgraduateeducationisverystronginthosefields.Yourfacultyconsistsofdistinguishedprofessorswhoefromleadinguniversitiesandhavemadeimportantresearchachievements.Yourprogramoffersstudentsatotalof14labs,amongwhichMultipleIdentitiesandInterpersonalInteractionsLabismostrelevanttomystudy.IexpectthatyourPh.D.programcangivemeinstructioninthefundamentaltheoriesandknowledgeofdevelopmentalpsychologyandalsogivemerigoroustraininginplanning,conductingandevaluatingresearch.IwouldliketoidentifyProf.xasmypotentialadvisor,whoseresearchinterestscoversawidespectrum,includingmostofthefieldsIaminterestedin.
