Butsheknewthiswaswhatshewasgoingtodo.

Afterseveralrejectionsfrommedicalschools,shefinallywas

acceptedbyGenevaMedicalCollege.Bystudyinghard,shegraduated

successfullyin1849.

Aftergraduatingfrommedicalschool,shewenttoParistolearn

moreaboutmedicine.Shewantedtobeasurgeon,butaseriouseye

problemforcedhertogiveuptheidea.

WhenshereturnedtoAmericain1851,shefounditdifficulttostart

herownpracticebecauseshewasawoman.In1857,Elizabethandher

sister,alsoadoctor,alongwithanotherwomandoctor,managedtoopena

newhospital,thefirstforwomenandchildren.Besides,shealsosetup

thefirstmedicalschoolforwomenin1868,whereshetaughtthewomen

studentsaboutdiseaseprevention.Itwasthefirsttimethattheideaof

preventingdiseasewastaughtinamedicalschool.

ElizabethBlackwellstartedtheBritishNationalHealthSocietyin

1871,whichhelpedpeoplelearnhowtostayhealthy.In1889,Elizabeth

BlackwellbecamethefirstwomandoctorintheUnitedStates.Most

importantlyshefoughtfortheadmissionofwomentomedicalcolleges.

ElizabethBlackwelldiedonMay3,1910,whenshewas89.She

openedaworldofchancesforwomen.Shealwaysfoughtforwhatwas

rightinallherlife.In1949theBlackwellmedalwasestablished.Ifs

giventowomenwhohaveexcellentachievementsinthefieldof

memberoftheU.S.CoastGuardforawhile.Inhisearlytwenties,he

becamegeneralmanagerofoneofhisfather'sbranchoffices-theTurner

AdvertisingCompanyinMacon,Georgia.

Twoyearslaterafterhisfather'ssuicide,TedTurnertookoverthe

company.Hesoondiscoveredthathewasmoreskilledthanhisfatherin

managingthebusiness.Duringthenexttwentyyears,TedTurnerworked

hardtoaccumulateenoughpowerandmoneytofulfillhisfather'sdream.

Reflectingonhisfather'sdeath,however,TedTurnerrealizedthat

itwasdangeroustoputtoomuchemphasisonmaterialpossessions.He

decidedtousehishard-earnedinfluencetoservethepublic.

Concernedabouttheenvironment,TedTurnerestablishedthe

BetterWorldSocietyin1985.Thepurposeofthisorganizationwasto

producedocumentariestoeducatepeopleaboutpollution,hunger,andthe

dangerofbuildingweaponsofmassdestruction.In1986Turnerbegan

sponsoringtheGoodwillGamestopromoteworldpeace.TheTurner
