SoI’vebeenhereinthejungleforaboutamonthnow.Mysecondaryschoolisabushschool.Theclassroomsaremadeofbamboo,withclayfloorsandrootsofgrass.Ittakesmeonlyafewminutestowalktoschooldownadustytrackcoveredinweeds.WhenIreachtheschoolgrounds,I’mgreetedbyachorusof“goodmorning”fromtheboys.Unlikestudentsinourcountry,theseboysdonotwearcottonuniforms,andmanyofthemalsohavetowalkalongway,sometimesforuptotwohours,justtogettoschool.

Tombe’sfather,Mukap,amanwithastrongjawandawrinkledforehead,ledustohishouse,alow,roundbamboohutwithnowindows,withadoorjustbigenoughtogetthrough,andwithgrassstickingoutoftheroof—thisshowsitisaman’shouse.Suchhousingisdarkinsidesoittooktimeforoureyestoadjust.FreshgrasshadbeenlaidonthefloorandtherewasaplatformforJennyandmetosleepon.Therewasafireplaceinthecentreofthehut.TheonlypossessionsIcouldseewereonebroom,afewsaucers,akettle,cups,pans,andacoupleofjars.
Mukapbuiltafireoutsideandlaidstonesonittoheat.Hethenplacedthehotstonesinanemptyoildrumwithkaukau(sweetpotato),ripecorn,andgreens.Hethencoveredthevegetableswithbananaleavesandleftthemtosteam.Itsmelleddelicious.Weateinsidethehutsittingroundthefire.Ilovedlisteningtothefamilytalkingsoftlytoeachotherintheirlanguage,eventhoughIcouldnotparticipatemuchintheconversation.Luckily,Tombeinterpretedforus.
