For13years,Barleandsixotherpolarbearswereforcedtoperform.Barlewasdeniednotonlytheabilitytorun,swim,andclimbbutalsothechancetofindamateandraiseyoung.Whennotperforming,Barleandtheotherbearswerekeptinatruckdividedintoseven64-square-footmetalcages.
BarlewouldlikelyneverhavebeenrescuedhaditnotbeenforKenandSherriGigliotti.In1996,theCanadiancoupletookatriptoCozumel,Mexico,wheretheyvisitedtheSuarezBrothersCircus.Theywereshockedbythepolarbears’conditions,sotheybroughthomeacircusprogramandshareditwiththeWinnipegFreePress.
SoonaftertheFreePressstoryappeared,DebbieLeahy,thendirectorofCaptiveAnimalRescue,beganinvestigatingtheSuarezBrothersCircus.Shewatchedthebearsperformseveraltimes,andonceshereceivedabehind-the-scenestour.Duringeachvisit,thebearsweredirty.Flieswereeverywhere.
