Iamveryexcitedthatyouhavetakenthisfirststeptoimproveyour

EnglishpronunciationandIdohopethatyouwouldenjoythis

programandreceivegreatbenefitsfromit.BeforewebeginIwanna

makesurethatyouhavedownloadedandprintedoutthetraining

manualwhichaccompaniesthiscourse.Ifyouhavenotyetdoneso,

pleasedoitsoonbecauseyou’lldefinitelyneedit.

NowyoumaybewonderinghowisitthatIamgoingtohelpyou

changethewayyouspeak.Well,basically,whenyoulearnedEnglish

asasecondlanguage,youkeptmanyofthesoundsandspeechrules

fromyourfirstlanguageandyouwerecontinuingtousethemwhen

youspeakEnglish.Thisiswhatgivesyouanaccent.Youwereusing

thesoundsandspeechrulesfromyournativelanguageinsteadofthe

soundsandspeechrulesofEnglish.Andyouknowwhy?Well,

becausewhenyoulearnedEnglish,nobodyevershowedyouwhatthe

soundsandspeechrulesofEnglishwereuntilnow.

That’swhyI’mcoming.BecauseIamgoingtoshowyouandtrain

youonhowtousethesesoundsandspeechrulescorrectly.Knowing

inusingtheseruleswillhelpyoureduceorpossiblyeveneliminate

youraccent.Nowthroughouttheprogramyou’reoftengoingtosee

mepointtomymouthtoshowyouhowtoproduceaparticular

sound.Iwantyoutopaycloseattentionandtrytocopyexactlywhat

itisIamdoing.Iwouldbeshowingyouhowtocorrectlyformnew

soundsbychangingthepositionofyourtongueorchangingthe

shapeofyourlips.Thesesmallchangesaregoingtomakeverybig

changesinyourspeech.We’regoingtopractisingandIrecommend

thatyouusethetrainingmanualandtrytopractiseoften.Whenyou

practise,Irecommendthatyoustartoutspeakingslowlyoutloudin

astrongvoicewhileexaggeratingallthemouthmovements.What

wouldyoubedoingisretrainingthemusclesofyourmouthinyour

tonguetomoveinnewways,whichwillproduceanewpronunciation

patterns.Thesenewspeechpatternswillslowlyandeventually

involveintoyourownspontaneousfastspeech,butitisimportant

thatyoustartoutgoingveryslow.Ifyoucanpronuncewordsand

sentencescorrectlyspeakingslowly,well,thenyou’llhaveno

probleminsayingthemfast.

Ibelievepractisingisimportant,butIdonotbelieveit’stheonlykey

towardssuccess.Beingawareofyourerrors.That’sthekey.Being

awareandalsorecognizingmistakeswhenyouhearthemwill

probablybethemostimportantfactorstowardsyourimprovement.

AnotherthingI’dlikeyoutokeepinmindandI’msureyoumay

havenoticedthisalreadyisthatwhenmostAmericansspeakyouwill

noticethatweseemtoopenourmouthalotandthereisagreat

amountofmouthmovements.WatchmymouthwhenIsay

somethinglike“Wow,wastherereallyrainingonWednesday!”Did

youseehowmymouthseemedtomove?Itwasn’twithmylipsflat.It

wasn’t“Wow,wastherereallyrainingonWednesday.”Therewasa

lotofmovements.Mymouthopenedwide,butalsomywholemouth

movedforward.NowIfindmanyforeignspeakers,maybebecauseof

theirlanguagecharacteristics,theydon’tmovetheirmouthsmuch.

Thereisverylittlefacialmovement.Becauseofthis,toanAmerican

listener,thewordsoftensoundmumble,makingitveryverydifficult

foranAmericanlistenertounderstandwhatitisyousaid.One

waytobebetterunderstoodimmediatelyistobecomemoreawareof

yourspeechandtoreallystartopeningandmovingyourmouth.

I’dliketotrytoobservewhatI’mtalkingabout.Whenyouspeakto

native-bornedAmericansorwatchTVormovies,noticehowwhen

Americansspeak,generallyourmouthsreallyopenbigandourlips

comeforward.Thesemovementshavealottodowiththesoundof

AmericanEnglish.

IalsowanttoaddthatI’lloftenbeaskingyoutorepeatwordsand

sentencesonthesevideos.Trytothinkasifwewerebothsittingin

thesameroomandIamdirectlyrightinfrontofyou.Listen

carefullytothewordsandsoundsthatIgiveyou.Listencarefullyto

mypronunciationandwatchmymouth,thenrepeatthewordsback

tomeinyourownvoicewiththetechniquesthatI’mshowingyouas

clearlyasyoucan.Nowatfirstyoumayfeelabitoffoolishtalkingto

yourcomputerscreen,butreallyyoushouldn’t.Makebelieveyou’re

speakingdirectlytome.You’llfindthiswilltobeextremelyhelpful

andeffective.

Duringthecourseofthisprogram,Iwillbeginbyaddressing

consonantsoundsandthenlateronwe’llworkwithvowelsounds.

Nowvowelsounds,asyouknow,areAEIOandU,likeahh,ohh,

eee,ehh,ihhandooo.Andconsonantsoundsarebasicallyallthe

otherletters’sounds,likeb,ch,s,t,f,g,sh,wandofcourse,thereare

manymanymoresounds.

Theconsonantsthatwearegoingtocoverinthisfirstsessionarethe

consonantRandtheconsonantW.Ok,areyouready?Herewego.

Let’sgetstarted.Let’sstartwiththeAmericanR.

R’sareeverywhere.They’reprobablythemostcommonlyoccurring

consonantsoundinEnglish.OnereasonforthisisthatR’saffect

vowelsounds,especiallywhenanRfallsattheendofwordoraftera

vowelsoundasinthewordCAR,orthewordAIR,ortheword

TURN.

Afterworkingwithsomanynon-nativeEnglishspeakersfrom

aroundtheworld,IbelievetheRsoundisoneofthemaincausesfor

beingmisunderstoodinAmericanEnglish.Therefore,thisiswhyI’ve

chosentostartoutwiththissound.Nowwhensomelanguages,like

ourspeakingSpanish,theRisproducedbybringingthetongue

forwardinthefrontofthemouthbehindtheupperteethandrolling

ortrillingthetongue~,likethat.Nowwhensomeotherlanguages,

likeGermanandFrench,theRisproducedinthebackofthethroat,

butthisisnothowweproduceanRsoundintheUnitedStates.In

AmericanEnglish,inordertosayaclearRsound,twodistinctthings

hafta(haveto)happen.Thefirstthingisthatourmouthandlips

cometightlyforwardasifyouwouldbesayingtheOOsound.Dothis

withme,sayOOandmakesureyoubringingyourlipsalltheway

forward.SayOO.That’sit.Youseehowyourlipsareforward?

That’swhatyouwannado.Thisisthepositionyourmouthshouldbe

inwhenyouproducinganAmericanR,likethat,andI’llbetyou

knowwheneverItoldyouthat.Now,thesecondthingisthatyour

tonguemovesbackinyourmouth.Itdoesn’tcomeforward.It’s

pulledback.Thisisprobablytheoppositeofwhatyou’redoingright
