1NormanBethuneisoneofthemostfamousheroesinChina.HewasaCanadiandoctor.HecametoChinatohelptheChinesepeopleanddiedforthem.

2NormanBethunewasbornin1890.Hebecameadoctorin1916andwenttoSpainin1936totreatthewoundedsoldiersduringthewarthere.Hesoonrealisedthatmanypeopleweredyingbecausetheydidnotgettohospitalquicklyenough.DrBethunedevelopednewwaysof

thesick.Heinventedspecialmedicaltoolstouseoutsidehospitalsandclosetothefightingareassothatdoctorscouldtreatthewoundedmorequickly.Hisinventionssavedmanylives.

In1938,DrBethunecametoChinaandhelpedtreatthewoundedduringtheAnti-JapaneseWar.Atthattime,therewerefewdoctors,sohehadtoworkveryhardonhisown.HisexperienceoftreatingpeopleinSpainwasusefulinChina.Hedevelopedtrainingcoursesforlocaldoctorsandnurses,andwrotebookssothattheycouldlearnabouthowhetreatedthesick.

4DrBethuneoftenworkedveryhardwithoutrestingortakingcareofhimself.Once,heevenworkedforsixty-ninehourswithoutstoppingandmanagedtosaveoverahundredlives.Onedayin1939,hecuthisfingerduringan

operation,buthecontinuedhisworkwithouttreatingit.Intheend,hediedofhiswound.
