Tounderstandwhy,weaskedanothersetofstudentstoreporttheirexpectationsabouteither

aneatlyorsloppilywrappedgift.Resultsshowedthatexpectationsweresignificantlyhigherfor

theneatlywrappedgifts.However,receiversoftheneatlywrappedgiftreportedthatitfailedto

liveuptotheirexpectations,whilethosewhogotthesloppilywrappedgiftsaiditsurpassed(超

過)theirexpectations.

Inourfinalexperiment,wesurveyed261adultsandaskedthemtoimaginereceivingeithera

neatlyorsloppilywrappedgift.Thistimeweinstructedhalfofthemtoimaginethegiftwasfrom

aclosefriend,whiletheotherhalfbelieveditcamefromanacquaintance(熟人).Thenwe

revealedthegiftandaskedthemtorateit.

Whenitcamefromaclosefriend,receiversendeduplikingthesloppilywrappedgiftmore.

However,forthegiftfromanacquaintance,receiverspreferreditwhenitwasneatlywrapped.

Thisoccursbecausetheseparticipantsusedthewrappingasacueforhowmuchthegift-giver

valuestheirrelationship.

Soifyou'restressedovergiftwrappingthisholidayseason,considersavingyourselfeffort

andmoneybywrappingyourfriends5giftshaphazardly(隨意地).Butforsomeoneyoudon't
