Thesupposedimportanceofinfluentialsderivesfromaplausiblesoundingbut

largelyuntestedtheorycalledthe“twostepflowofcommunication”:

Theresearchers1argumentstemsfromasimpleobserratingaboutsocial

influence,withtheexceptionofafewcelebritieslikeOprahWinfrey-whose

outsizepresenceisprimarilyafunctionofmedia,not

interpersonal,influence-eventhemostinfluentialmembersofapopulation

simplydon'tinteractwiththatmanyothers.Yetitispreciselythese

non-celebringinfluentialswho,accordingtothetwo-step-flowtheory,are

supposedtodrivesocialepidemicsbyinflucencingtheirfriendsandcolleagues

directly.Forasocialepidemictooccur,however,eachpersonsoaffected,must

theninflucencehisorherownacquaintances,whomustinturninfluence

StandardsBoard(FASB)rushedthroughrulechanges.Thesegavebanksmore

freedomtousemodelstovalueilliquidassetsandmoreflexibilityinrecognizing
