SPEAKER:李倩ScoutJemAtticusDILLBOOTOMMayellaEWELLThestoryconsistedbytwoclues.IttakesplaceinAlabamaduringtheDepression,andisnarratedbythemaincharacter,alittlegirlnamed"Scout".Herfather,Atticus,isalawyerwithhighmoralstandards.Scout,herbrotherJem,andtheirfriendDillareintriguedbythelocalrumorsaboutamannamedBoo,wholivesintheirneighborhoodbutneverleaveshishouse.Legendhasitthatheoncestabbedhisfatherinthelegwithapairofscissors,andheismadeouttobeakindofmonster.ThechildrenarecurioustoknowmoreaboutBoo,andduringonesummercreateamini-dramatheyenactdaily,whichtellstheeventsofhislifeastheyknowthem.Slowly,thechildrenbeginmovingclosertoBoo’shouse,whichissaidtobehaunted.TheytryleavingnotesforBooonhiswindowsillwithafishingpole,butarecaughtbyAtticus,whofirmlyreprimandsthemformakingfunofasadman'slife.ShortSummaryAndAtticus,thekids’father,decidestotakeonacaseinvolvingablackmannamedTomwhohasbeenaccusedofrapingaverypoorwhitegirlnamedMayella.TheFinchfamilyfacesharshcriticismintheheavilyracistbecauseofAtticus'sdecisiontodefendTom.But,Atticusinsistsongoingthroughwiththecasebecausehisconsciencecouldnotlethimdootherwise.HeknowsTomisinnocent,theevidencewassoclearlyinTom'sfavor.Hewasnamed“nigger-lover".Despitethis,Atticuswantstorevealthetruthtohisfellowtownspeople,exposetheirbigotry,andencouragethemtoimaginethepossibilityofracialequality.Butthewhitejurywillneverbelieveablackmanoverawhitewoman,blackman'swordwouldnotbetrusted.Finally,Atticuslostthecase.Heishopingforanappeal,butunfortunatelyTomtriestoescapefromhisprisonandisshottodeathintheprocess.
