Butwhilethismaybetrue,it'snotagoodenoughreasontocondemngapyears.There9salwaysa
constantfearoffallingbehindeveryoneelseonthesociallyperpetuated"racetothefinishline,“whether
thatbetowardgraduateschool,medicalschoolorlucrativecareer.Butdespitecommonmisconceptions,a

StudiesfromtheUnitedStatesandAustraliashowthatstudentswhotakeagapyeararegenerally
betterpreparedforandperformbetterincollegethanthosewhodonot.Ratherthanpullingstudentsback,

cofoundedin1980,RobertRothkeepacloseeyeontheageofhisnearly200workers,fiveareretiring
thisyear.Mr.Rothhasthreecommunity-collegestudentsenrolledinawork-placementprogram,witha
startingwageof$13anhourthatrisesto$17aftertwoyears.
