2、d and supprted us as we wrked twards ur graduate degrees. i wuld especially like t thank my wn family, eight members f which are in the audience tday. i wuld als like t thank all f the department secretaries and ther engineering schl staff members wh always seemed t be there when cnfused graduate st

3、udents needed help. and finally i wuld like t thank the washingtn university faculty members wh served as ur instructrs, mentrs, and friends.as i think back n the seven-and-a-half years i spent at washingtn university, my mind is filled with memries, happy, sad, frustrating, and even humrus.tnight i

4、 wuld like t share with yu sme f the memries that i take with me as i leave washingtn university.i take with me the memry f my ffice n the furth flr f lpata hall - the rm at the end f the hallway that was t ht in summer, t cld in winter, and always t far away frm the wmen's restrm. the windw was

5、 my ffice's best feature. were it nt fr the physics building acrss the way, it wuld have affrded me a clear view f the arch. but instead i gt a view f the rf f the physics building. i als had a view f ne crner f the rf f urbauer hall, which seemed t be a favrite perch fr varius species f birds w

6、h alternately wn perching rights fr several weeks at a time. and i had a nice view f the physics curtyard, ntewrthy as a gd place fr watching peple run their dgs. it's amazing hw fascinating these views became the lnger i wrked n my dissertatin. but my favrite view was f a nearby ak tree. frm my

7、 furth-flr vantage pint i had a rather intimate view f the tree and the varius birds and squirrels that inhabit it. ccasinally a bird wuld land n my windw sill, which usually had the effect f startling bth f us.i take with me the memry f tw yung prfessrs wh passed away while i was a graduate student

8、. anne jhnstne, the nly female prfessr frm whm i tk a curse in the engineering schl, and bb durr, a plitical science prfessr and a member f my dissertatin cmmittee, bth lst brave battles with cancer. i remember them fndly.i take with me the memry f failing the first eam in ne f the first engineering

9、 curses i tk as an undergraduate. i remember thinking the curse was just t hard fr me and that i wuld never be able t pass it. s i went t talk t the prfessr, ready t drp the class. and he tld me nt t give up, he tld me i culd succeed in his class. fr reasns pletely ludicrus at the time, he said he h

10、ad faith in me. and after that my grades in the class slwly imprved, and i ended the semester with an a n the final eam. i remember hw mtivatinal it was t knw that smene believed in me.i take with me memries f the midwestern friendliness that s surprised me when i arrived in st. luis 8 years ag. sin

11、ce mving t new jersey, i am sad t say, nbdy has asked me where i went t high schl.i take with me the memry f the shrt-lived cmputer science graduate student scial cmmittee lunches. the idea was that grups f cs grad students were suppsed t take turns cking a mnthly lunch. but after ne grad student pr

12、epared a pt f chicken that pisned almst the entire cs grad student ppulatin and ne unlucky faculty member in ne fell swp, there wasn't much enthusiasm fr having mre lunches.i take with me the memry f a mre successful graduate student effrt, the establishment f the assciatin f graduate engineerin

13、g students, knwn as ages. started by a handful f engineering graduate students because we needed a way t elect representatives t a campus-wide graduate student gvernment, ages sn grew int an rganizatin that nw spnsrs a wide variety f activities and has been instrumental in addressing a number f engi

14、neering gradncerns.i take with me the memry f an engineering and plicy department that nce had flurishing prgrams fr full-time undergraduate, masters, and dctral students.i take with me memries f the 1992 u.s. presidential debate. eager t get invlved in all the ecitement i vlunteered t help wherever

15、 needed. i remember spending several days in the makeshift debate hq giving ut-f-twn reprters directins t the athletic cmple. i remember being thrilled t get assigned the jb f cllecting film frm the phtgraphers in the debate hall during the debate. and i remember the disappintment f drawing the shrt

16、est straw amng the student vlunteers and being the ne whhad t take the film ut f the debate hall and dwn t the dark rm five minutes int the debate - with n chance t re-enter the debate hall after i left.i take with me memries f university hlidays which never seemed t apply t graduate students. i rem

17、ember spending many a fall break and president's day hliday with my fellw grad students in all day meetings brught t us by the cmputer science department.i take with me memries f eams that seemed designed mre t test endurance and perseverance than mastery f the subject matter. i managed t escape

18、 taking any classes that featured infamus 24-hur-take-hme eams, but remember the suffering f my lelleagues. and what dctuld frget the pain and suffering ne must endure t survive the qualifying eams?i take with me the memry f the seven-minute rule, which always seemed t be an acceptable ecuse fr bein

19、g ten minutes late fr anything n campus, but which desn't seem t apply anywhere else i g.i take with me the memry f friday afternn acm happy hurs, knwn nt fr kegs f beer, but rather bwls f rainbw sherbet punch. ver the several years that i attended these happy hurs they enjyed varying degrees f

20、ppularity, ften prprtinal t the quality and quantity f the accmpanying refreshments - but there was always the rainbw sherbert punch.i take with me memries f purple parking permits, the west campus shuttle, checking my pendafle, ver-due library bks, trying t print frm cec, lunches n delmar, friends wh slept in their ffices, miniature glf in lpata hall, the greenway talk, divisin iii basketball, and trying t cnvince dean russel that yet anther engineering schl rule shuld be changed.finally, i wuld like t cnclude, nt with a memry, but with sme advice. what wuld a graduatin speech be withut a
