1、The Harborby Carl Sandburg The Harbor was first published in 1912 and later collected in Chicago Poems 芝加哥詩集 This poem depicts both the lyrical poet and “son of the streets”. It is the kind of poem that made Sandburg famous: short and powerful.Imagist Poem The imagists wanted “direct treatment of th

Out from the huddled and ugly walls, I came sudden, at the citys edge, O

4、n a blue burst of lake, Long lake waves breaking under the sun On a spray-flung curve of shore; 走出雜亂丑陋的城墻, 我忽然來到城市的邊緣, 一汪藍(lán)色的湖水映入簾, 陽光下長長的波浪拍碎在浪花四濺彎曲的湖岸;The nature: beautiful, freeIn the second part of the poem,the author uses some images such as lake, lake waves, spray, sun, shore to desicibe the be

The tone is cheerful.Part 2 And a fluttering storm of gulls, Masses of great gray wings And flying white bellies Veering and wheeling free in the open 一群展翅飛翔的水鷗, 一大片灰色的大翅膀, 和急速掠過的白胸膛 在空中自由翻滾翱翔。The last four lines are a description of the gulls in nature. The author uses some colour w

6、ords, such as blue, gray, and white, to depict the beauty of nature. And, there are some well chosen verbs in this part, such as flutter, veer, and wheel, showing us the freedom of the gulls.Contrast Contrast between city life and nature: The first half of the poem is full of darkness and desperatio

7、n .The people seem to be tormented by poverty. However, the rest of the lines show us a bright and delightful natural scene by the dynamic images waves and gull and their bright color blueand white. Contrast The second contrast is between the urban people and the free gulls. The urban people are suf

8、fering poverty. They just stand by doorways and bear the dull life silently. The gulls can fly freely in the sky. the purpose of the contrast The author uses the contrast between the ugly city and the beautiful nature to express his dissatisfaction with city life and also his love to nature. The poe

9、t also wants to encourage people to pursuit freedom and get rid of the dull life.The deeper meaning: The first section conveys the idea of caged city life. The city life does have its own benifits and superiority, but it steals away the people s freedom-theyre forced to obey the social orders and tr

10、aditions. The second section seems to depict an individual who escapes and is released from an imprisoned city life. Coming out to the lake and walking under the sun, the poet approaches the free life. Leaving the cage behind, he feels himself like the fluttering storm of gulls freely flying in the

11、sky. hunger hope What does the harbor symbolize Harbor is a symbolizition of the barrier between city and nature, and depression and hope.Themes1.The admiration for nature and the dissatisfaction with city life.2.
