2、ontributingtoitsgreatness;however,Ithinkimmigrationisoneofthemajorfactors.ThehistoryofimmigrationtotheUnitedStatesdealswiththemovementofpeopletotheUnitedStatessincethefirstEuropeansettlementsinabout1600.Startingaround1600BritishandotherEuropeanssettledprimarilyontheeastcoast.LaterAfricanswerebrought

3、asslaves.TheUnitedStatesexperiencedsuccessivewavesofimmigrationwhichroseandfellovertime,particularlyfromEurope.Asanationofimmigrants,theyhonorthegreattraditionofthemeltingpot.TheAmericanDreamisthebeliefthatthroughhardworkanddetermination,anyUnitedStatesimmigrantcanachieveabetterlife,usuallyintermsof

4、financialprosperityandenhancedpersonalfreedomofchoice.ThisDreamhasbeenamajorfactorinattractingimmigrantstotheUnitedStates.Inthiscase,Americahasoneofthegreatestassetsanationcanhave:peopleyearntolivethere.Asweallknow,Chinesestudents,Indiandoctors,BritishactorsandFrenchfinanciersallflocktoitsshores.Wha

5、tismore,Americaisverywelcomingandalwayshasbeen.Thus,itsuniversitiesbrimwithforeignbrainsanditszippiestcompaniesarepoweredbyimmigrants.Somepeopleevenstayforever.Othersworkforawhileandthenreturnhome,whiletheyoftencontinuetoswapideasanddobusinesswiththeirAmericanfriends.Itisanationthatcanattracttheclev

6、erestpeopleintheworldwhowouldbringinnovationandprosperitytothiscountryindefinitely.Atthe1998commencementaddressatPortlandStateUniversity,U.S.presidentBillClintonvoicedsupportforimmigrants,includingimmigrantsfromAsiaandLatinAmericawhenhesaidthatAmericahasconstantlydrawnstrengthandspiritfromwaveafterw

7、aveofimmigrants.Theyhaveprovedtobethemostrestless,themostadventurous,themostinnovative,themostindustriouspeople.Fromthis,wecanseetheUnitedStateshasalwaysbeenenergizedbyitsimmigrantpopulations.Americahasalwaysdrawnstrengthfromthebrightestandmostdedicatedpeoplecominghere.Itisworthmentioningduringtheca

8、pitalistageofEnlightenmentinEurope,thegreatimmigrationtotheUnitedStatesbroughthereadvancementanddemocracy.InAmericathereexistsnodeep-rootedfeudalsystemduetotheformationofanationofimmigrants.Andthedevelopmentofproductiveforcesgetsridofallthedrawbacksbroughtbythefeudalthought.Asaresult,capitalistecono

9、myhasmaderapidprogressandfastenedthedevelopmentofdifferentsocialcivilizations.Fromtheaspectofeconomy,wefindpositiveeconomiceffectsfocusonaddedproductivityandlowercoststoconsumersforcertaingoodsandservices.AccordingtoJamesSmithsstudy,thissenioreconomistdrewaconclusionthatimmigrantscontributeasmuchas$

10、10billiontotheU.S.economyeachyear.TheNRCreportfoundthatalthoughimmigrants,especiallythosefromLatinAmerica,wereanetcostintermsoftaxespaidversussocialservicesreceived,overallimmigrationwasaneteconomicgainduetoanincreaseinpayforhigher-skilledworkers,lowerpricesforgoodsandservicesproducedbyimmigrantlabo

11、r,andmoreefficiencyandlowerwagesforsomeownersofcapital.Italsosaidimmigrantworkersarenottakingjobsfromdomesticworkers.Rather,Immigrantsownbusinessesinavarietyofindustriesandmakesubstantialcontributionstobothlow-skilledandhigh-skilledsectorsandtheyaredoingjobsthatwouldnothaveexistediftheimmigrantworke

12、rshadnotbeenintheUnitedStates.Thereforeitcanbebeneficialtoalldomesticresidents.Fromtheaspectofhigh-technologyandotherknowledge-basedsectors,immigrationstillcontributesalottothiscountrysdevelopment.SiliconValleyandotherhigh-techsectorsfunctionwellbyskilledandeducatedimmigrants.Theyhavedevelopednewpro

13、ducts,suchastheJavacomputerlanguage,whichhavecreatedemploymentopportunitiesformillionsofAmericans.Theseimmigrantscanmaketheentireeconomymoreproductive.Asonepresidentrecentlyhighlightedinhisremarksimmigrantsplayanimportantpartintheirinternationalcompetitiveness,especiallyintechnology-intensiveandserv

14、iceindustries.ComparedtoU.S.-bornAmericans,immigrantsaremorelikelytoholdanadvanceddegreeandalmosttwiceaslikelytoholdaPh.D.Manyofthemostproductivescientistsandengineersareforeign-born,keepingtheUnitedStatesattheforefrontofglobalinnovation.In2006,immigrantstotheUnitedStatesplayedaroleinanestimated24.2

15、percentofinternationalpatentapplications.InnovationleadstoincreasedproductivityforAmericanworkersandeventuallyahigherstandardoflivingforallAmericans.Furthermore,immigrantshelptoprovidebusinessleadershipindevelopingnewproductsandindustries.Forexample,arecentstudyfoundthatbetween1990and2005,immigrants

16、started25percentofventure-backedU.S.publiccompanies,employingmorethan200,000U.S.workers.Andsomeofthecompaniesattheforefrontofthedigitalrevolutionwereco-foundedbyimmigrants:Intel,SunMicrosystems,eBay,Google,andYahootonameafewexamples.Thisentrepreneurialspiritisparticularlyimportantinthewakeoftherecen

17、trecessionaswelooktowardstheprivatesectortofindnewopportunitiesforgrowthandtocreatenewjobsforAmericanworkers.Infact,immigrantsalsoleadtosomeproblems,suchascrimeandthedegradationoftheenvironment.However,generallyspeaking,immigrantsarenotonlyanintegralpartofAmericancultureandsocietybutalsoimportantcontributorstomaketheUnitedStatesthebiggestcountryin
