TextOne“Natureisn’tclassical,dammit,andifyouwanttomakeasimulationofnatureyou’dbettermakeitquantummechanical,andbygolly,it’sawonderfulproblembecauseitdoesn’tlookeasy.”Withthosewords,in1981,RichardFeynman,anAmericanphysicist,introducedtheideathat,byharnessingquantummechanics,itmightbepossibletobuildanewkindofcomputer,capableoftacklingproblemsthatwouldcausearun-of-the-millmachinetochoke.Feynmanwasright:ithasnotbeeneasy.Overthepastfourdecadesquantumcomputershaveslowlyevolvedfromsquigglesontheoreticians’blackboardstosmallmachinesinuniversitylaboratoriestoresearchprojectsrunbysomeoftheworld’sbiggestcompanies.Nowoneofthosemachines,builtbyresearchersat,hasatlastshownwhatallthefussisabout.Itappearstohaveperformed,injustoverthreeminutes,ataskthat,theresearchersestimate,theworld’smostpowerfulclassical puterwouldtakearound10,000yearstocomplete.’smachineisaspecial-purposedevicethatwasdesignedtosolveacontrivedproblemwithfewpracticaluses.Butthisdisplayofso-called“quantumsupremacy”isnonethelessatone.Whatmightquantumcomputingactuallybeusedfor?Thatquestionisobscuredbythepilesofmoneyandhyperbolethatsurroundit.Alongwith5GandAI,itisoneofthetechnologiesthats,ofbothcountriesandcompanies,lovetocite.ChinaandAmericahavepledgedtoinvestbillionsofdollarsinit.Thereisexcitedtalkofarace,andoftherichesandpowerthatawaitthetoseizethe“HolyGrailofcomputing”.Despitethebreathlessness,quantumcomputersarenotmagical.Arichbodyoftheoreticalworkprovesthattheywillbepotent,butlimited.Forallthetalkofsupremacy,quantumcomputersarenotsuperiorineveryregardtotheirclassicalcousins.Indeedformanytaskstheywillofferlittleimprovement.Yetforsomeproblems—butonlysome—cleverprogrammersormathematicianscancreatealgorithmsthatexploitthemachines’quantumcapabilities.Inthosespecialcases,quantumcomputersofferhugegains,crunchingtasksthatwouldotherwisetakeyearsormillenniadowntominutesorseconds.Severalofthesealgorithmshavebeendeveloped.Theyofferaglimpseofwherequantumcomputersmightexcel.Inencryption,forexample,aquantummachinecouldquicklyuntanglethecomplexmathsthatunderliesmuchofthescramblingthatprotectsinformationonline.Aworldwithpowerfulquantumcomputers,inotherwords,isoneinwhichunravels.Techfirmsandernmentsareinvestigatingnewfoundationsforencryptionthatarenotknowntobesusceptibletoquantumcomputers.Butdeployingthemwillbetheworkofdecades.AsFeynmanpointedout,classicalcomputersstruggletosimulatethequantum-mechanicalprocessesthatunderpinphysicsandchemistry.Quantumcomputerscoulddosowithaplomb,ausefultrickfordeveloeverythingfrompharmaceuticalstopetrochemicals.Theirabilitytosolveoptimisationproblemscouldhelpfinancialfirmsimprovetheirtradingalgorithms.Artificial-inligenceresearchershopethatquantumcomputerscouldofferaboosttotheiralgorithms,too.Fornow,though,allthatliesinthefuture.’smachineisbestthoughtofasaSputnikmoment.Byitself,SputnikdidnothingbutorbitEarthwhilebee.Butitprovedaconcept,andgrabbedtheworld’sattention.’s
