thepresident:thisisaseasonformillionsofamericanstobetogetherwithfamily,tocontinuelong-heldholidaytraditions,andtoshowourgratitudetothosewelove.andalongtheway,someofusmightevenwatchalittlebasketballoreatsomechristmascookies,too.

thefirstlady:hereatthewhitehouse,overthepastfewweeks,we’vehadabout70,000peoplefromallacrossthecountrycomevisitusandlookatourholidaydecorations.

thisyear’sthemewas“gatheraround:storiesoftheseason.”

andineveryroomofthehouse,wetriedtotellastoryaboutwhoweareasamericansandhowwecelebratetheholidaystogether.

andwemadecertaintohighlightsomeofthemostpowerfulstoriesweknow—thestoriesofouroutstandingtroops,veterans,andmilitaryfamiliesandtheirserviceandsacrificeforourcountry.

thepresident:ourextraordinarymenandwomeninuniformareservingsothattherestofuscanenjoytheblessingswecherishduringtheholidays.butthatmeansmanyofourtroopsarefarfromhomeandfarfromfamily.they’respendingsomeextratimeonthephonewiththeirlovedonesbackhome.orthey’resettingupvideochatssotheycanwatchasthepresentsareopened.sotoday,wewantallofourtroopstoknowthatyou’reinourthoughtsandprayersthisholidayseason.

andhere’sthegoodnews:formanyofourtroopsandnewestveterans,thismightbethefirsttimeinyearsthatthey’vebeenwiththeirfamiliesonchristmas.infact,withtheiraqwaroverandthetransitioninafghanistan,fewerofourmenandwomeninuniformaredeployedinharm’swaythanatanytimeinthelastdecade.

thefirstlady:andthat’ssomethingweallcanbethankfulfor.

andwithmoreandmoreofourtroopsbackhereathome,nowit’sourturntoserve—it’sourturntostepupandshowourgratitudeforthemilitaryfamilieswhohavegivenussomuch.

andthat’swhyjillbidenandistartedourjoiningforcesinitiative—torallyallamericanstosupportourmilitaryfamiliesinwayslargeandsmall.

andagainandagain,wehavebeenoverwhelmedbytheresponsewe’vegottenasfolksfromacrossthecountryhavefoundnewwaystogivebacktothesefamiliesthroughtheirschools,businesses,andhousesofworship.

thepresident:that’sthesamespiritofgivingthatconnectsallofusduringtheholidays.somanypeopleallacrossthecountryarehelpingoutatsoupkitchens,buyinggiftsforchildreninneed,ororganizingfoodorclothingdrivesfortheirneighbors.forfamilieslikeours,thatserviceisachancetocelebratethebirthofchristandliveoutwhathetaughtus–toloveourneighborsaswewouldourselves;tofeedthehungryandlookafterthesick;tobeourbrother’skeeperandoursister’skeeper.andforallofusasamericans,regardlessofourfaith,thosearevaluesthatcandriveustobebetterparentsandfriends,betterneighborsandbettercitizens.

thefirstlady:soaswelooktothenewyear,let’spledgeourselvestolivingoutthosevaluesbyreachingoutandliftingupthoseinourcommunitieswhocoulduseahandup.

ofcourseiwanttostartbythankinghomero.imean,he’sjustanamazingstory,anamazingperson,andi’mgratefulforthatwonderfulintroduction.wehavetogivehimanotherroundofapplause.(applause.)aclearreminderofwhywe’reheretodayandwhatwe’reworkingfor.

ialsowanttorecognizethejackkentcookefoundation,aswellastheluminafoundation,forhelpingtomakethiseventpossible.let’sgivethemaroundofapplauseaswell.(applause.)

andofcourse,aswecometogethertotalkabouttheimportanceofcollegecounseling,iespeciallywanttorecognizealloftheschoolcounselorsheretoday.yes!(applause.)youcanraisetheroofforyourselves.alittleraisingtheroof.(laughter.)butithinkwecanallagreethatallofourcounselors,allofyouhaveoneofthehardest,butmostimportantjobsinoureducationsystem,yettoooftenyoudon’tgettheresources,thesupportortheappreciationthatyouneedanddeserve.andthathasseriousconsequencesnotjustforourkids,butforourcountry.

imean,let’sbehonestwithourselves–whenitcomestocollegecounselinginournation’sschools,therearetwoworlds.asmanyofyouknow,whiletheamericanschoolcounselorassociationrecommendsnomorethan250studentspercounselor,thenationalaverageisonecounselorforevery471students.sotoomanyofourkidsgothroughhighschoolwithlittle,ifany,realguidanceonhowtogetintocollege.

theydon’tknowwhatclassestotake,orhowtoprepareforthesatortheact.noonehelpsthemdecidewhichcollegestoapplyto.noonereviewstheirapplications.andplentyofkidshavenoideathatthey’reeligibleforfinancialaid,sotheyassumetheyjustcan’taffordcollege,andtheydon’tevenbothertoapply.

now,that’soneworld.theotherworldismuchsmaller–it’saworldofschoolswherethequestionisn’twherestudentsaregoingtocollege,but–orwhetherthey’regoingtocollege,butwhere.kidsinthisworldstartpreparingforcollegelongbeforetheyevenstarthighschool.andfromthefirstdayoffreshmanyear,they’vebeenshepherdedthrougheverystepoftheprocess.they’vegotsatandactprepcourses,theytakethosetestsagainandagaintoimprovetheirscores.counselorshavemuchsmallercaseloads,andtheywalkkidsthrougheverydeadline,theyediteverydraftoftheiressays.honestly,whenbarackanditalkaboutthis,welookatthekindofcollegecounselingmanyofthekidsaregettingtodayandwewonderhowweevermanagedtogetourselvesintocollege.

sothefactisthatrightnow,asmallnumberofstudentsaregettingeveryadvantageinthecollegeadmissionsrace,whilemillionsofotherstudentswhoarejustastalentedcan’tevenbegintocompete.(applause.)andasthecollegepresidentshereallknow,theresultisthatcollegesaren’talwaysgettingalloftheverybeststudents.they’regettingthestudentswhocanbestaffordtosucceedinthissystem.andweareleavingbehindsomanybright,hungry,promise-filledkids.wearedeprivingourselvesofsomuchhumanpotentialinthiscountry–fromthescientificdiscoveriesthesekidsmightmake,tothebusinessesthattheymightbuild,totheleadershipthattheymightonedayshowinourcommunities.

we’remissingallofthat.we’realsolosingallofthatsimplybecausewearen’tmakingthebasicinvestmentintheirfuturetoday,andthat’satragedy.it’satragedyforourcountry.it’satragedyforthosekidsandfortheirfamilies,becauseweallknow–weknow–thatifyouwanttosecureadecent-payingjobintoday’seconomy,ahighschooldiplomasimplyisn’tenough.

sounlike40or50yearsago,highereducationisnolongerjustforkidsinthetopquarterorthetophalfoftheclass,ithastobeforeveryone.sowearegoingtoneedacollege-counselingsystemthatreflectsthisnewreality.(applause.)

now,that’seasiersaidthandone.weknowthatthisisn’tgoingtohappenovernight.weknowthatstatesandschoolsystemsarefacingallkindsofbudgetchallenges.butoneofmycoremessagestostudentsthroughmyreachhigherinitiativeisthatnomatterwhatisgoingonattheirschoolorintheirfamily,i’vebeentryingtotellkidsthatnomatterwhatresourcestheymayhaveornothave,thattheystillneedtotakeresponsibilityfortheireducation.itellthemthattheyneedtodotheworktoreachouttoteacherswhocanhelpthem.theyneedtoresearchschoolsintheircommunitiesontheirown.theyneedtofindthatfafsaformonlineandfillitout.

somymessagetoallofyouisthesame:weallneedtostepupanddowhatwecanwiththeresourceswehave,especiallywhenitcomestosupportingourschoolcounselors.andthatisexactlywhatsomanyofyouhavedonethroughthecommitmentsyou’vemadeaspartofthissummit.

universitiesacrossthecountryhavepledgedtocreatecollegeandcareer-readinesscoursesintheirmastersprogramsforschoolcounselors.schooldistrictsarepartneringwithnonprofitsandcollegestoprovidetrainingforcounselorsoncethey’reinourschools.nonprofitsaresteppinguptoimprovestudent-and-counselorratiosandbringingrecentgraduatesintoschoolstoserveasrolemodelsandmentors.

andthesearejustthehighlights.altogether,thesecommitmentsrepresenttensofmillionsofdollarsthatwillimpacthundredsofschoolsandcountlessstudents.theseareoutstandingcommitments,andweneedmoreeffortsliketheseallacrossthiscountry.everyoneofushasaroletoplay.

soforthesuperintendentsheretoday,iknowyouallarestrugglingwithsomanydemandsundersuchtightbudgets,butcanyoudomoretosupportyourcounselors?canyoufindwaysto–(applause)–yes–shiftsomeofthatextraburdenthatfallsintheirlap,likesubstituteteaching,casemanagement,examproctoring?canyougivethemmoretimetoactuallycounselstudents?

tothecollegepresidentshere,canyoudoevenmoretomakecollegecounselingpartofyourmissiontogettheverybeststudentstoyourschools?andcanthefoundationsandnonprofitorganizationshelpinthatwork?canyourethinkthecollegeadmissionsprocesstofindmoreofthosestudentswho’vegotwhatittakestosucceedbuthaven’thadthechancetodeveloptheirpotential?canyoucreatecollegeprepcentersinyourcommunitiesandensurethattest-prepclassesareaffordableforallofourkids?

andforthoseofyouwhoareconcernedthatperhapsthistypeofinvolvementmightfalselyraisehopesofadmissiontoyourschool–becausei’veheardthataswell–justconsiderthefactthatwhilemanyofthekidsyouhelpmightnotbetherightfitforyourcollegeoruniversity,buttheywillbetherightfitforanotherschool,andmaybethatotherschoolwillhelppreparestudentsforadmissiontoyourschool.(applause.)

sothisisreallyacollectiveeffort,andeveryonecanbenefit.andasyouallstepuptotakeontheseissues,really,ireallywanttohearaboutwhatyou’redoing.andthat’soneofthereasonswhyirecentlyannouncedtwonewreachhighercommencementchallenges.i’maskingcollegestocreatevideosshowcasingyourworktobringlow-incomeandfirst-generationstudentstoyourcampusesforpeermentoring,collegeimmersionexperiencesandallkindofwonderfulopportunities.

andforthehighschools,iwanttoseevideosaboutwhatyou’redoingtoincreaseyourfafsacompletionratestohelpmorestudentsaffordcollege.andforthoseschoolswiththewinningvideos,ijustmightpayavisitaroundcommencementtime,ifyouknowwhatimean–(laughter)–toletyouknowhowimpressediam.

soihopethatyouallwillgotoandgetmoreinformation,becausei’meagertoseewhatyouallaredoing.iknowyou’regoingtodosomegreatthings.yousee,iknowthatthesmallest,mostlocaleffortscanmakesuchadifferenceinthelivesofouryoungpeople.

andi’mthinkingtodayofaschoolcalledlacuevahighschoolinalbuquerque,newmexico.afewyearsago,thecollegecounselingstaffatthatschoolmetwithayoungwomannamedrobertagutierrezduringhersophomoreyear.robertawasanexcellentstudent,sotheyurgedhertotakethepsatandcomeupwithalistofcollegesthatshewantedtoapplyto.now,whilerobertatookthetest,shenevercameupwiththatlist–andi’msureyouknowwhy.

butthen,atthebeginningofroberta’sschoolyear,hercounselorslearnedthatshehadbeennamedanationalmeritsemi-finalistwithapsatscoreinthetop1percentoftheentirestate.sothecounselors–yes,goodstuff–(applause)–thecounselorsimmediatelyinformedrobertathatshewouldbeeligibleforthousandsofdollarsinscholarships.androberta,ofcourse,shewasshocked.shetoldthemthatshenevermadethelistofcollegesbecauseherfamilylivedfrompaychecktopaycheck,soshedidn’tthinkshecouldaffordtuition.shetoldthemthatjusttopaythe$15feetotakethepsat,shehadtoskiplunchforaweek.

andaftermeetingwithroberta,thecounselingstaffdecidedthatnostudentattheirschoolwouldeveragainhavetochoosebetweeneatingandtakingatestthatopensthedoorstocollege.sotheynowholdfundraisers–yes.(applause.)theyholdfundraisersthroughouttheschoolyeartoensurethatlow-incomestudentscantakethepsatforfree.andtheygooutoftheirwaytotelleveryfamilyaboutthefinancialaidresourcesthatareavailableforcollege.

andasforroberta,sheisnowinherjunioryearonafullscholarshipattheuniversityofnewmexico,andshe’splanningtogetaphdinpsychology–yes.(applause.)

youallknowthesestories.therearesomanykidsjustlikerobertaallacrossthiscountry,andthey’rebright.thesekidsaredetermined.thesearethekidswhohaveeverythingittakestosucceedifwewouldjustgivethemthatchance.andthat’swhatthecounselorsandleadersatlacuevahighschooldidforroberta–theygaveherashotatthefutureshedeserved.

andjustthinkabouttherippleeffectthatthosecounselorswillhaveintransformingjustonestudent’slife.thinkaboutthedifferencerobertacanmakewhenshegetsthatphd.thinkofallthepatientsshemighttreat,allthegroundbreakingresearchshemightdo.thinkoftherolemodelthatshewillbe–shealreadyis–inspiringcountlessyoungpeoplejustlikehertopursuetheirdreams.

therearemillionsofyoungpeoplelikerobertaallacrossthiscountry,andtheyarecountingonustostepupforthem.they’recountingonustogivethemopportunitiesworthyoftheirpromise.andthatisexactlywhatallofyouaredoingeverysingleday.thatisthepurposeofthecommitmentsthatyou’vemadeaspartofthissummit.that’swhyi’mproudandhonoredtobehere.

andontopofallofthat,youspentthousandsofhoursgivingbacktothiscommunity–tutoringkids,playingmusicforseniors,servingfoodtofolksinneed,andofcourse,mentoringthelocalyoungpeoplebackthere–iseeyouall–throughthenindescholarsprogram.soproudofyouallbackthere.

andthat's,asthepresidentsaid,whyi'mheretoday.(applause.)ashementioned,myofficedidthiswonderfulcompetitiontohighlightcollegesthatarehelpingunderservedyoungpeoplegraduatefromhighschoolandthengoontohighereducation.sobyprovidingtutoringandactprepclasses,financialaidworkshops,andsomuchmore,yournindescholarsprogramstoodoutasashiningexampleofhowschoolslikeoberlincanliftfirst-generationstudentsintocollege.

soi'mheretodaybecausei'mproudofyouall.ireallyam.i'minspiredbyyourcommitmenttoserviceandsocialjustice.andi'mimpressedbythecommunitythatyouallhavecreatedhere–awarm,supportive,inclusivecommunitythatembodiesthevaluesthatdefinethisschool.

andevenamidstthejoyandexcitementofgraduation,iknowthatyoumaybefeelingsomerealsadnessaboutleavingthiscommunitybehind.youmayalsobefeelingsomerealanxietyaboutventuringoutintotheworldbeyondthesewalls.andi'mnotgoingtolietoyou–formanyofyou,thisisgoingtobeaprettybigtransition.infact,ithinkdr.martinlutherkingdescribeditwellinhiscommencementaddressin'65whenhedeclared,“todayyoubidfarewelltothesafesecurityoftheacademicenvironment.youpreparetocontinueyourjourneyontheclamoroushighwaysoflife.”

andthetruthis,graduates,afterfouryearsofthoughtful,respectfuldiscussionanddebatehereatoberlin–thoseseminarswhereyouexplorednewideastogether,thoselate-nightconversationswhereyouchallengedeachotherandlearnedfromeachother–afterallofthat,youmightfindyourselfalittledismayedbytheclamoroutsidethesewalls–thename-calling,thenegativeads,thefolksyellingateachotherontv.afterbeingsurroundedbypeoplewhoaresodedicatedtoservingothersandmakingtheworldabetterplace,youmightfeelalittlediscouragedbythepolarizationandgridlockthattoooftencharacterizeourpoliticsandciviclife.

andinthefaceofallofthatclamor,youmighthaveanoverwhelminginstincttojustruntheotherwayasfastasyoucan.youmightbetemptedtojustrecreatewhatyouhadhereatoberlin–tofindacommunityoflike-mindedfolksandworkwiththemoncausesyoucareabout,andjusttuneoutallofthenoise.andthat'scompletelyunderstandable.infact,isometimeshavethatinstinctmyself–run!(laughter.)

buttoday,graduates,iwanttourgeyoutodojusttheopposite.today,iwanttosuggestthatifyoutrulywishtocarryontheoberlinlegacyofserviceandsocialjustice,thenyouneedtorunto,andnotawayfrom,thenoise.(applause.)today,iwanttourgeyoutoactivelyseekoutthemostcontentious,polarized,gridlockedplacesyoucanfind.becausesooften,throughoutourhistory,thosehavebeentheplaceswhereprogressreallyhappens–theplaceswheremindsarechanged,livestransformed,whereourgreatamericanstoryunfolds.

forexample,thinkbacktothestruggleforwomen'ssuffrageandthestoryofaleadingsuffragistandoberlinalumnamedlucystone.(applause.)peoplescreamedather.theyspatonher.theyeventhrewprayerbooksatherasshetriedtospeak.heropponentsdeclaredthatlettingwomenvotewas“unnatural,”wouldleadtochildneglectandallkindsofsocialills.soi'dsaythatdebatewasprettypolarized,wouldn'tyou?

andthinkaboutpresidentroosevelt'sstruggletopassthenewdealafewdecadeslater.fdr'splanforsocialsecuritywascalled“socialist,”a“fraudontheworkingman.”oneopponentevenstatedthatitwould“endtheprogressofagreatcountry.”sothatdebatewasprettycontentious,too.

andintheyearsbeforedr.kingaddressedthoseoberlingraduatesin‘65,heandhiscolleaguesfacedfirehosesanddogsinmontgomery,beatingsonabridgeinselma,insultsandassaultsastheysatquietlyatlunchcountersandmarchedpeacefullydownpublicstreets.

andifyouthinktoday'sgridlockisbad,letmeremindyouthatitwasagoodcenturybetweenthesigningoftheemancipationproclamationandthepassageofthecivilrightslegislationofthe1960s.andofallthewomenatthesenecafallswomen'ssuffrageconventionin1848,justonelivedtoseewomencasttheirvotes.justone.

butthesefolksdidn'tlettheuglinessandtheobstaclesdeterthem.theydidn'tjustgiveupandretreattothecomfortablecompanyoflike-mindedfolks,becausetheyunderstoodthatthisishowdemocracyoperates.itisloudandmessy,andit'snotparticularlywarmandfuzzy.andbelieveme,iknowthisfrompersonalexperience.(laughter.)overtheyears,i'veoccasionallyrunintothenoisemyself.buti'vecometorealizethatmostofthatclamorisreallycomingfromjustahandfulofveryloudfolksoutonthefringes.

see,thetruthisthattheoverwhelmingmajorityofpeopleinthiscountryareopen-mindedandbig-hearted.theyaresmartenoughtoseethroughthatnoise,andtheyaresohungryforvoicesthatriseaboveit–smart,compassionate,thoughtfulvoiceslikeyours.

now,theprocessofdemocracymightnotalwaysbeasfastorassmoothaswe'dlike.butthefactis,itworks.generationaftergeneration,thiscountryhasbecomemoreequal,moreinclusive,morefair,morefree.mylifeandsomanyofyourlivesareatestamentofthattruth.butthathasonlyhappenedbecausefolkslikeallofyoulefttheircomfortzonesandmadetheirvoicesheard.
