Thetheoldmanandtheseaisabriefbutmeaningfulstory.Afterfishingnothingduringthepast84days,theoldfishermanSanDiegofinallycapturedasalmon,whichweightisover1500pounds.Afteratoughstruggle,exactly,threedays’standoff,theoldmaneventuallykilledthebigfishthatcametosurfacebecauseofbeingexhausted.However,onthewaytoharbor,theoldmanwasattackedbymanysharkswhotrackedafterthesmellofthedeadsalmon,whathestillholdwasonlytheboneofthebigfishwhenhearrivedatport.
Itissaidthattheauthor,ErnestHemingwaywhoisagreatAmericanwriterwrotethenovelinonlyeightweeks,basingononeofhisfriend’strueexperience.Hecreatedthefigureoftheoldmanwhichwaslatercalledbypeople“toughman”andshowedhislifeattitudeandspiritualworld.Themostwell-knownsentenceofthisnovelandalsothetopicofitisthat:“manisnotmadefordefeat.Amancanbedestroyedbutnotdefeated.”Thesewordsbecomebeliefofmanyreaders.
Inmyopinion,thewholestoryisaboutabattlebetweenanoldmanandthesea,bothofwhichareconsideredtoha一vesymbolicmeaningsaccordingtocritics.Theoldmanoncewassoenergeticandstrongbutcouldn’tgetharvestfromthesea.Heusedhisoldbodyandstrongmindtofightagainstnatureandchallengehisfate.Hedidwinabit—hegotthelargefish,buthelosttotallybecausehecarriedbackonlytheskeletonofthefishwithhishandsbleeding.Ontheotherhand,hehaddoneallhecouldtofightagainstallunluckythingsanddidn’tlosehisface.Hebeha一vedlikearealman,atoughman.
It’satragicnovel,butit’salsoaheroicsymphony.Thepooroldfishermanwasregardedasafailurebyotherfishersashehadcapturednothingduringthepast84days.Whenhefishedthat1500-poundsalmon,hedeterminedtofighttodeatheventhoughheknewclearlythatthebigfishwasmuchstrongerthanhim,andfinally,hesucceeded.Buttheordealwasnottotheendevenhehadsucceededincapturingthebigfish.Thesalmonwasbiggerthanhisfishing-boat,hedadnochoicesbutbindingthefishtoonesideofhisboat.Duringhiswayhome,thedeadsalmonwasattackedagainandagainbyshakesfollowedafterthesmellofblood.Hehadtodoeverythinghecoulddotoprotecthisvictory.Harpoonwastakenawaybyashark,hetiedtheknifeontheoartosticktheshake;theknifewasbroken,heusedshortsticktofightagainsttheshark;theshortstickwaslost,hefoughtwithrudder···Nothingcoulddestroyhisvolitionthoughthefishwaseatenbysharks.Godseemstoha一venopitytowardsuchagreatoldman;hedroppedmisfortunesonthispooroldmantimeandtimeagain.ButtheoldSanDiegoneverga一vein.
Theoldman’sstoryisnotonlyasymboloftherelationshipbetweenhumanandnature,butalsoasymboloftheindestructiblespiritofhuman.Inreality,theoldmanwasdefeated,butinspirit,hewasawinner.Thespiritoftenaciousfightofhimsuggestedthedignityandperseveranceofhumanpeople.Evenagreatsuccessfulpersonhassomeexperienceoffrustration.Therearevariousreasonsofbeingfailed,butevenaninsignificantfailureisanunbearablestrike.Goingtosea,hewouldgainanotherhopeofbeingsuccessful.Maybe,thesinisterlifeenvironmentandthetenacityoflifeattitudeisthereasonthatthiscompositionismoreandmoreattractive.Lifeitselfisakindofendlesspursuit,justliketheoldman’ssaying“humanisnotborntobefailure,onecouldberuined,buthecouldnotbedefeated.”Thesewordsremindmeofthe“Destinysymphony",inwhichBeethovensaysthat“Icouldbedestroyed,butIcouldn’tbeconquered”。Theyindicatethemeaningofahero,themeaningoflife.Also,it’swhatthisstorywantstotellpeople:humanshouldfacethefailurebra一vely.Fromthisrespect,thisbookisnotanallegoryorafairytale,butarealisticworks.What’simportantinthisstoryisnotwinbutthevalueofalife.Theoldmandarestochallengetheextremityandoverthelimittimeandtimeagain.Whathebroughttohumanisnotonlyanattitudeofconfidence,butalsoapowerfulstrengthofspirit.

Santiago,anoldmanaboutsixtyyearsold,fishedalonewithnothingcaughtineightyfourdays.Noonewouldliketotalktohimforhisextremelybadluckexceptaboywhoalwayscametohelpafterthedayandfinallylefttoanotherboatunderthepressureofhisparents.Ignoringthecontemptfromtheyoungerfishermenandsympathyfromtheolder,onthemorningofthe85thday,theoldmanstartedhisfishingwithdeterminationandrowedhisoldboatveryfarintheseawherehebelievedtherewouldbebigfish.FortunatelytheoldmanmetwithabigfishashehadwishedandfinallydefeatedthebigMarlinwithtwodaysandnightsstruggleafterovercominggreatdifficulties.ButmoreunfortunatelythereweremanysharkscomingafterhisboatattractedbythesmellofthebloodofthebigMarlin.Afterdeath-and-lifestruggle,whenhefinallygotridofthesharkscomingaftertheboat,thebigMarlinwasbareskeleton.
