Suddenly,adsforthedrugwerereplacedwithadslookingforVioxx"victims".Lawfirmsacrossthenationbeganrecruitinganyonewhohadevertakenthedrugasplaintiffs(原告)forclass-action(公訴)suits.Merck,thecompanythatdevelopedthedrug,couldbeliableforbillionsofdollars,makingitoneofthecostliestliabilitycasesever,Nosurprise,then,thatMerck'sstockplummeted(垂直落下)40percentinjustsixweeks.

Buttherealcostwasevengreater.NotonlydidpatientsstoptakingVioxxbut,doctorssay,manypeoplestoppedtakingtheirothermedicines,too—sometimesputtingtheirhealthatseriousrisk.

Vioxxwasthefirstpebbleinthepharmaceuticalrockslide.Soon,accusationsaboutaspateofotherdrugsweremakingheadlines,includingallCOX-2inhibitorswhich,likeVioxx,relievepain.Thechargesdidn'tstopthere.TheFDAwasaccusedofsimplyrobber-stampingnewdrugs;drugcompanies.wereblamedforhidinginformationaboutunsafeproducts;.andtheefficacy(功效)ofclinicaltrialsthatdidnotrevealhowlargenumbersofpeoplewouldreactwasquestioned.Butonequestionthatwasrarelyaskedcoulddeterminewhetherornotpharmaceuticalcompaniescontinuetodevelopandproducebreakthroughmedicationsthatcansaveorextendlivesandhelppeoplelivewithoutpain.Thequestion:doAmericansexpectdrugstoberisk-free?And,ifsomeonesuffersabadreaction,willlawyersratherthandoctorsbethefirstpeoplewecall?

PanicoverPills:Overreaction?

Duringtheten-yearperiodbetween1994and2004,theFDAapproved321completelynewdrugs(thisdoesn'tincludeapprovalsforchangestoexistingmedicines),bringingthetotaltomorethan10,000drugproductsonthemarket.Duringthatsameperiod,eightdrugswerewithdrawnforreasonsofsafety,suchasthedietdrugfenfluramine(fen-phen,associatedwithheart-valvedisease)andtheallergydrugSeldane(linkedtoheartarrhythmias).ButtheVioxxrecallcreatedashockwavefortheAmericanconsumerlikenoother.Manypeoplehadcometodependontheir"meds",andtheyexpectedthemtobesafe,too,especiallywhentheycostsomuch.Prescriptiondrugsaccountfor,someSay,thefastestgrowingsegment(aboutone-tenth)ofallhealthexpenditures,withsomespecialtydrugscostinghundredsofdollarsperdose.

"WithVioxx,therealshockandoutragecamewhentherewasasuggestionthatpeopleinauthoritymayhaveknownabouttheseharmfulsideeffectsandnotsharedthemwithdoctorsorthepublic,"saysAnneWoodbury,chiefhealthadvocatefortheCenterforHealthTransformation,athinktankfoundedbyNewtGingrich.Itmadepeoplequestiontheirfaithinthepharmaceuticalindustry,federalregulatorsandphysicians—thosewetrusttomakesureourdrugsaresafe.Before,takinganewlyprescribedpillwithaslugofwaterwasasroutineasbrushingyourteeth.Formanypeople,thisisnolongerthecase.
