IhaveoftenthoughtthatifHollywoodstarshavearoletoplay,itistoteachusthathappinesshasnothingtodowithfun.Theserich,beautifulinpidualshaveconstantaccesstoglamorousparties,fancycars,expensivehomes,everythingthatspellshappiness.

Butinmemoiraftermemoir,celebritiesrevealtheunhappinesshiddenbeneathalltheirfun:depression,alcoholism,drugaddiction,brokenmarriages,troubledchildren,profoundloneliness.

Thewaypeopleclingtothebeliefthatafun-filled,pain-freelifeequateshappinessactuallydiminishestheirchancesofeverattainingrealhappiness.Iffunandpleasureareequatedwithhappiness,thenpainmustbeequatedwithunhappiness.But,infact,theoppositeistrue:Moretimesthannot,thingsthatleadtohappinessinvolvesomepain.

Asaresult,manypeopleavoidtheveryendeavorsthatarethesourceoftruehappiness.Theyfearthepaininevitablybroughtbysuchthingsasmarriage,raisingchildren,professionalachievement,religiouscommitment,civicorcharitablework,andself-improvement.
