damaged.Theboysranoff,laughingattheirhandywork.

Carolinebentdowntocarefullypickupthebird.Thepoorfeatheredsoul

waswriggling(扭動)about,withafearfullookinitseyes."Don'tworry,"

Carolinewhisperedsoftly.Shetookahandkerchieffromherpocketandgently

placedthebirdonit.

Carolinewalkedasquicklyasshecouldbacktoherhouse,carefulnotto

shakethebirdaroundtoomuch.Shefoundashoebox,filleditwithsoftcotton

ballsandthenlaidthebirddowninitsnewrestingplace.

"Letmegetyousomewaterandfood.That'stheleastIcando."Shetook

atinysaucerfromthekitchen,filleditwithwater,andplaceditinacornerof

thebox.Shemanagedtofindsomesunflowerseeds,asthatwastheonlybird-

friendlyfoodshecouldthinkof.Carolinewasworried.Shedidn'twantthe

birdtodie.Thepoorbirdwasnowfastasleep,nodoubttiredoutfromits

earliersuffering."Pleasedon'tdie."Carolinewhisperedtearfully.

Iftherewasanyonewhomshecouldturnto,itwouldbeMr.Roberts.Mr.

Robertswasworkingatthenaturemuseum.Hehadbirdfeedersthroughout

hisyard,andsometimeswoulddropinherscienceclassatschool.Caroline

neverknewtherewassomuchinformationaboutbirds,untilhearinghim

speak.Shefiguredhewouldknowwhattodo.

CarolinecalledMr.Robertsandhurriedlytoldhimhertale.

Inthemorning,theBlackwellBirdRescueSocietycalled,informingacar

wouldcometopickupthebirdat10am.

wasalwayslookingforwardtoit.Inwinter,Billwouldattachasnowplow(鏟

雪機)tothefrontofthelawntractor.IseriouslytoldhimthatIwouldinventa

bettersnowplowwhenIgrewup."Sureyouwill.You'llgetapatentcertificate.
