Youhavebeenundergraduatesforfouryears.Ihavebeenpresidentfornotquiteone.Youhaveknownthreepresidents;Ioneseniorclass.Wherethenliesthevoiceofexperience?Maybeyoushouldbeofferingthewisdom.PerhapsourrolescouldbereversedandIcould,inHarvardLawSchoolstyle,docoldcallsforthenexthourorso.Wealldoseemtohavemadeittothispoint—moreorlessinonepiece.ThoughIrecentlylearnedthatwehavenotprovidedyouwithdinnersinceMay22.IknowweneedtoweanyoufromHarvardinafigurativesense.Ineverknewwetookitquitesoliterally.Butlet’sreturntothatnotionofcoldcallsforamoment.Let’simaginethiswereabaccalaureateserviceintheformofQoneofyouwilldancetangoandworkindancetherapyinArgentina;anotherwillbeengagedinagriculturaldevelopmentinKenya;another,withanhonorsdegreeinmath,willstudypoetry;anotherwilltrainasapilotwiththeUSAF;anotherwillworktocombatbreastcancer.Numbersofyouwillgotolawschool,medicalschool,andgraduateschool.But,consistentwiththepatternGoldinandKatzhavedocumented,aconsiderablenumberofyouareselectingfinanceandconsulting.TheCrimson’ssurveyoflastyear’sclassreportedthat58percentofmenand43percentofwomenenteringtheworkforcemadethischoice.Thisyear,eveninchallengingeconomictimes,thefigureis39percent.Highsalaries,theallbutirresistiblerecruitingjuggernaut,thereassuranceformanyofyouthatyouwillbeinNewYorkworkingandlivingandenjoyinglifealongsideyourfriends,thepromiseofinterestingwork—therearelotsofwaystoexplainthesechoices.Forsomeofyou,itisacommitmentforonlyayearortwoinanycase.Othersbelievetheywillbestbeabletodogoodbyfirstdoingwell.Yet,youaskmewhyyouarefollowingthispath.Ifindmyselfinsomewayslessinterestedinansweringyourquestionthaninfiguringoutwhyyouareposingit.IfProfessorsGoldinandKatzhaveitright;iffinanceisindeedthe“rationalchoice,”whydoyoukeepraisingthisissuewithme?Whydoesthisseeminglyrationalchoicestrikeanumberofyouasnotunderstandable,asnotentirelyrational,asinsomesenselessafreechoicethanacompulsionornecessity?Whydoesthisseemtobetroublingsomanyofyou?Youareaskingme,Ithink,aboutthemeaningoflife,thoughyouhaveposedyourquestionincode—intermsoftheobservableandmeasurablephenomenonofseniorcareerchoiceratherthantheabstract,unfathomableandalmostembarrassingrealmofmetaphysics.TheMeaningofLife—capitalM,capitalL—isacliché—easiertodealwithastheironictitleofaMontyPythonmovieorthesubjectofaSimpsonsepisodethanasamatteraboutwhichonewoulddareadmittoharboringseriousconcern.Butlet’sforamomentabandonourHarvardsavoirfaire,ourimperturbability,ourpretenseofinvulnerability,andtrytofindthebeginningsofsomeanswerstoyourquestion.Ithinkyouareworriedbecauseyouwantyourlivesnotjusttobeconventionallysuccessful,buttobemeaningful,andyouarenotsurehowthosetwogoalsfittogether.Youarenotsureifagenerousstartingsalaryataprestigiousbrandnameorganizationtogetherwiththepromiseoffuturewealthwillfeedyoursoul.Butmanyofyouarenowwonderinghowthesecommitmentsfitwithacareerchoice.Isitnecessarytodecidebetweenremunerativeworkandmeaningfulwork?Ifitweretobeeither/or,whichwouldyouchoose?Isthereawaytohaveboth?Youareaskingmeandyourselvesfundamentalquestionsaboutvalues,abouttryingtoreconcilepotentiallycompetinggoods,aboutrecognizingthatitmaynotbepossibletohaveitall.Youareatamomentoftransitionthatrequiresmakingchoices.Andselectingoneoption—ajob,acareer,agraduateprogram—meansnotselectingothers.Everydecisionmeanslossaswellasgain—possibilitiesforegoneaswellaspossibilitiesembraced.Yourquestiontomeispartlyaboutthat—aboutlossofroadsnottaken.Finance,WallStreet,“recruiting”havebecomethesymbolofthisdilemma,representingasetofissuesthatismuchbroaderanddeeperthanjustonecareerpath.Theseareissuesthatinonewayoranotherwillatsomepointfaceyouall—asyougraduatefrommedicalschoolandchooseaspecialty—familypracticeordermatology,asyoudecidewhethertouseyourlawdegreetoworkforacorporatefirmorasapublicdefender,asyoudecidewhethertostayinteachingafteryourtwoyearswithTFA.Youareworriedbecauseyouwanttohavebothameaningfullifeandasuccessfulone;youknowyouwereeducatedtomakeadifferencenotjustforyourself,foryourowncomfortandsatisfaction,butfortheworldaroundyou.Andnowyouhavetofigureoutthewaytomakethatpossible.Ithinkthereisasecondreasonyouareworried—relatedtobutnotentirelydistinctfromthefirst.Youwanttobehappy.Youhaveflockedtocourseslike“PositivePsychology”—Psych1504—and“TheScienceofHappiness”insearchoftips.Buthowdowefindhappiness?Icanofferoneencouraginganswer:getolder.Turnsoutthatsurveydatashowolderpeople—thatis,myage—reportthemselveshappierthandoyoungerones.Butperhapsyoudon’twanttowait.AsIhavelistenedtoyoutalkaboutthechoicesaheadofyou,Ihaveheardyouarticulateyourworriesabouttherelationshipofsuccessandhappiness—perhaps,moreaccurately,howtodefinesuccesssothatityieldsandencompassesrealhappiness,notjustmoneyandprestige.Themostremunerativechoice,youfear,maynotbethemostmeaningfulandthemostsatisfying.Butyouwonderhowyouwouldeversurviveasanartistoranactororapublicservantorahighschoolteacher?Howwouldyoueverfigureoutapathbywhichtomakeyourwayinjournalism?WouldyoueverfindajobasanEnglishprofessorafteryoufinishedwhoknowshowmanyyearsofgraduateschoolanddissertationwriting?

Theansweris:youwon’tknowtillyoutry.Butifyoudon’ttrytodowhatyoulove—whetheritispaintingorbiologyorfinance;ifyoudon’tpursuewhatyouthinkwillbemostmeaningful,youwillregretit.Lifeislong.ThereisalwaystimeforPlanB.Butdon’tbeginwithit.Ithinkofthisasmyparkingspacetheoryofcareerchoice,andIhavebeensharingitwithstudentsfordecades.Don’tpark20blocksfromyourdestinationbecauseyouthinkyou’llneverfindaspace.Gowhereyouwanttobeandthencirclebacktowhereyouhavetobe.Youmayloveinvestmentbankingorfinanceorconsulting.Itmightbejustrightforyou.Or,youmightbeliketheseniorImetatlunchatKirklandwhohadjustreturnedfromaninterviewontheWestCoastwithaprestigiousconsultingfirm.“WhyamIdoingthis?”sheasked.“Ihateflying,Ihatehotels,Iwon’tlikethisjob.”Findworkyoulove.Itishardtobehappyifyouspendmorethanhalfyourwakinghoursdoingsomethingyoudon’t.

Butwhatisultimatelymostimportanthereisthatyouareaskingthequestion—notjustofmebutofyourselves.Youarechoosingroadsandatthesametimechallengingyourownchoices.Youhaveanotionofwhatyouwantyourlifetobeandyouarenotsuretheroadyouaretakingisgoingtogetyouthere.Thisisthebestnews.Anditisalso,Ihope,tosomedegree,ourfault.Noticingyourlife,reflectinguponit,consideringhowyoucanliveitwell,wonderinghowyoucandogood:Theseareperhapsthemostvaluablethingsthataliberalartseducationhasequippedyoutodo.Aliberaleducationdemandsthatyouliveself-consciously.Itpreparesyoutoseekanddefinethemeaninginherentinallyoudo.Ithasmadeyouananalystandcriticofyourself,apersoninthiswaysupremelyequippedtotakechargeofyourlifeandhowitunfolds.Itisinthissensethattheliberalartsareliberal—asinliberare—tofree.Theyempoweryouwiththepossibilityofexercisingagency,ofdiscoveringmeaning,ofmakingchoices.Thesurestwaytohaveameaningful,happylifeistocommityourselftostrivingforit.Don’tsettle.Bepreparedtochangeroutes.Remembertheimpossibleexpectationswehaveofyou,andevenasyourecognizetheyareimpossible,rememberhowimportanttheyareasalodestarguidingyoutowardsomethingthatmatterstoyouandtotheworld.Themeaningofyourlifeisforyoutomake.Ican’twaittoseehowyouallturnout.Docomeback,fromtimetotime,andletusknow.

三羊開泰奮蹄去，猴年吉利迎春來。

在這辭舊迎新，佳節(jié)將至的時(shí)刻。在此，我受xxx書記托付，謹(jǐn)代表校黨委和行政，向在教學(xué)、科研、治理、后勤效勞第一線上辛勤耕耘、悄悄奉獻(xiàn)的教職工，向?yàn)樵拼筮M(jìn)展建立做出卓越奉獻(xiàn)的離退休老同志們，向英姿颯爽、朝氣蓬勃、奮勉向上、努力成才的同學(xué)們，向心系云大、熱心教育，關(guān)懷支持云大進(jìn)展的朋友們，致以親切的問候和真誠的祝愿。祝大家元旦歡樂，身體安康，學(xué)習(xí)進(jìn)步、工作順當(dāng)、萬事如意！

馬上過去的XX年，是感動(dòng)人心的一年，也是值得紀(jì)念的一年。在這一年里，我校的各項(xiàng)事業(yè)獲得長足進(jìn)展、一派欣欣向榮。全校師生員工以“三個(gè)代表”重要思想為指導(dǎo)，仔細(xì)貫徹黨的十六大和十六屆三中全會(huì)精神，實(shí)施黨建新風(fēng)、加強(qiáng)校風(fēng)、教風(fēng)和學(xué)風(fēng)建立，不斷推動(dòng)依法治校、以德立校、學(xué)術(shù)興校；

積極深化教學(xué)改革，不斷提高教學(xué)質(zhì)量，“學(xué)為主體，教為主導(dǎo)”的培育模式和“滿渠碧波蕩漾”的學(xué)術(shù)氣氛正在形成；

合理規(guī)劃學(xué)科布局，不斷調(diào)整學(xué)科構(gòu)造，科研經(jīng)費(fèi)和獲獎(jiǎng)工程不斷增加；

進(jìn)一步加強(qiáng)師資隊(duì)伍和干部隊(duì)伍建立，學(xué)術(shù)水平逐步提高，治理效益穩(wěn)步增長，尤其是學(xué)位點(diǎn)建立和新校區(qū)建立取得突破性進(jìn)展，黨建和思想政治工作取得嶄新的成就。

XX年，我校博士后科研流淌站由2個(gè)增至4個(gè)，一級(jí)學(xué)科博士學(xué)位授權(quán)點(diǎn)由1個(gè)增至3個(gè)、二級(jí)學(xué)科博士學(xué)位授權(quán)點(diǎn)由16個(gè)增至36個(gè)、碩士學(xué)位授權(quán)點(diǎn)由59個(gè)增至102個(gè)，專業(yè)碩士授權(quán)點(diǎn)由2個(gè)增至4個(gè)。在教育部、省政府的大力支持下，在校黨委的統(tǒng)一領(lǐng)導(dǎo)下，我校用四個(gè)半月的時(shí)間完成了軟件學(xué)院的建立，周濟(jì)部長稱這是一大驚喜，充分表達(dá)了云南大學(xué)同心協(xié)力的工作作風(fēng)和較高的工作效率。軟件學(xué)院師生現(xiàn)已按期遷入新校區(qū)，并順當(dāng)通過了教育部專家組的中期評(píng)估檢查。我校喜獲國家根底討論工程，即“973”工程1項(xiàng)，成為全國獲得973工程的24所大學(xué)之一，還獲得了國家自然科學(xué)一等獎(jiǎng)，這是由我校和西北大學(xué)、南京古生物討論所聯(lián)合申報(bào)的。XX年云大建校八十周年，金秋10月，我校盛大進(jìn)行了建校80周年慶祝大會(huì)，向海內(nèi)外各界展現(xiàn)了云南大學(xué)80年的輝煌成就，并與八方賓朋、四海校友一道，共同謀劃云大更加絢爛輝煌的將來。

回憶過去，我們引以為驕傲；

端詳現(xiàn)實(shí)，我們信念百倍；
