Inthebackground,newcompetitorsareforcingtheold-linedruggiantstostruggletokeeppace.BiotechnologycompanieslikeGenentecharetakingtheleadinfindingnewtreatmentsforcancer,apromisingandlucrativefield.

ExecutivesofthemajordrugcompaniessaytheyexpectpublicscrutinyinthewakeofproblemswithVioxxandotherdrugs.Buttheysaytheyareconcernedthatconsumermistrusthasledtounrealisticexpectationsaboutdrugsafetyandrisks,stuntingthedevelopmentofnewmedicines.

"Ithinkthereisanoverallunreasonableexpectationrightnowthatthereissuchathingasariskfreedrug,"saidSidneyTaurel,chiefexecutiveofEliLilly&Company.

Themajordrugmakersremainhighlyprofitable.Butatsome,includingPfizerandMerck,thelargestandthird-largestAmericancompaniesintermsofrevenue,salesarestagnantandprofitsarefailing,leadingtolayoffsand--forthefirsttimeinyears--cutsinresearchbudgets.Thedrugindustry,whichisdominatedbycompaniesbasedinthiscountry,ishardlyinafull-blowncrisis,andlayoffsareoccurringmainlyonthemarginsofitsworkforce.Pfizeralonewillmakeabout$8billioninprofitthisyear,onsalesofabout$51billion,andinvestmorethan$7billioninresearchanddevelopmentalthoughthecompany'sresearchspendingfell6percentinthethirdquarterof2005comparedwiththesameperiodin2004,andPfizerexpectsittostayflatordeclineinthecomingyears.Overall,theindustryspendsmorethan$30billionannuallyonresearchanddevelopment.

Butforthecompanies,andforpatientswhoarecountingonindustryresearchtoproducenewtreatmentsfordiseaseslikerheumatoidarthritisanddiabetes,thesearetryingtimes.WallStreethasalsotakennoticeoftheindustry'swoes.SharesofPfizerareneartheirlowestlevelssince1997,closingFridayat$22.43,andabroadindexofdrugstockshasfallen25percentinfiveyears.Incontrast,sharesofbiotechnologycompaniesaresoaring.

Virtuallyeverytheoryhasconcernedwitheitherthestructureorthefunctionoflaughter,whereasrelativelyfewhavebeendevotedtothequestionofitsorigin.Iproposetoofferatheorywhich,sofarasIamaware,hasnotpreviouslybeensetforth,thatonlythoseanimalscapableofspeecharecapableoflaughter,andthatthereforeman,beingtheonlyanimalthatspeaks,istheonlyanimalthatlaughs.

Thoseofuswhohaveobservedchimpanzeescloselyfeelquiteconfidentthatthechimpanzeeoccasionallyexhibitsbehavior.thatlooksverymuchlikeaprimitivehumanlaughter.Thisbehavior,however,hasbeenobservedonlyinahumancontext;whetherornotitoccursundernaturalconditionsisdubious;buttheveryfactthatunderanyconditionsanapeiscapableofsuchbehavior.ismorethanpassinginterest—fordoesitnotindicatethatearlymanhadtherudiments(初級(jí)階段)oflaughter?

Laughterisdefinedasanemotionalresponse,expressivenormallyofjoy,involvingcharacteristicsoundsofthevoiceandmovementsofthefeaturesandthebody.Thejoymaytaketheform.ofgladness,amusement,ridicule,andsoon.WhyshouldlaughterbeasintimatelyassociatedwiththepowerofspeechasIhavesuggested?Speechistheverbal,orvocal,expressionofsymbolsandtherelationsbetweensymbols.Probablyataboutthesametimespeechevolved,laughteroriginatedtoo,asakindofsemiverbalizedsocialexpressionofpleasure.Withthedevelopmentofspeech,thenumberofoccasionsproducingsuddenexperiencesofpleasureincreased,and,sincelaughterwascloselyassociatedwithspeech,manhadthismeansofexpressinghispleasure.Havingbrokenthe"soundbarrier",asitwere,mancouldexpresswithlaughterwhatotheranimalscouldnot.Sincetheloweranimalshadnospeech,theyencounteredfewerpleasurablesituationsand,furthermore,wereunabletolaughnomatterwhatthestimulation.

Oncethefirstlaughterhadbeenlaughedbyprimitiveman,withsuchapparentlypleasurableeffectsallaround,laughterbegantotakeonanintrinsicvaluewithinthesocietyofman.Thepersonpossessingtheabilitytocommunicatepleasureinaloudlaughbegantoenjoysocialadvantagesoverhismoreseriouscolleagues;hebecamea"goodmixer",sociallyselectedandlikedbysociety.Thustheprocessofnaturalselectionwouldtendtooperateinfavorofthoseabletoexpresstheirpleasurablestatesinlaughter,ascomparedwiththosenotsoable.Throughoutthecourseofevolution,laughterwouldbecomeestablishedthroughoutthehumanspeciesasafunctionofsociologicalandpsychologicalvalue.
