ExaminationTheSpeakingexaminationtakescebeforethemainexaminationperiod:between1Marchand30AprilfortheJuneexamination.EachCentredecidesonaconvenientperiodwithinthesedatesforitsSpeakingexaminations.ItisimportantthatdatesgivenforthecompletionoftheSpeakingexaminationandthedespatchofrecordingsandmarksheetstoCIE(seeparagraph6)areadheredtoinordertoallowsufficienttimeformoderation.AppointmentofEachCentreselectsitsownteacher/ExaminertoconductandassesstheSpeakingexaminationforitscandidates.ThisisnormallyateacherfromwithintheLanguagesdepartment,butcouldbesomeonelocalfromoutsidetheCentre.CIEisnotresponsibleforanyfeesagreed.Intheinterestsofstandardisationtherewillbeonlyoneteacher/ExaminerperCentre.WhereaCentrewishestouseadditionalteacher/Examinersbecauseithasalargenumberofcandidates,permissiontodosomustbesoughtfromtheIGCSELanguagesGroupatCIEbeforethestartofeachSpeakingexaminationperiod.Permissiontousemorethanoneteacher/Examinerwillonlybegrantedontheunderstandingthatteacher/ExaminersattheCentreworktogethertoensureacommonapproachtotheconductoftheSpeakingexaminationandtheapplicationofthemarkscheme.ThesampletheCentresubmitstoCIEshouldincludetheworkofeachteacher/ExaminerandaSpeakingExaminationWorkingMarkSheetshouldbesubmittedforeachteacher/Examiner,withcandidatenamesandnumbersclearlyentered.Pleaseseeparagraph10(InternalModeration)forfurtherdetails.MaterialsfortheSpeakingtestmaterials(Teachers'NotesBookletandRoleyCards)aredespatchedbyCIEapproximaytwotothreeweeksbeforetheassessmentperiod.TheseshouldbeopenedfourworkingdaysbeforetheCentre’sassessmentstartsandstudiedcarefullybytheteacher/Examinerbeforeconductinghis/herfirstSpeakingexamination.Teacher/Examinerswhohavepreparedtheirownrolesfullyandareconfidentinwhattheyarengarebetterabletohelpcandidateswhoexperienceanydifficulty.Oncethematerialshavebeenopened,theSpeakingexaminationsmustbecompletedassoonasisrealisticallypossible.OncetheCentrehascompleteditsSpeakingexaminations,thematerialsremainandmustbekeptinasecurecebytheCentreuntiltheendoftheexaminationperiod(e.g.until30AprilfortheJuneexamination).InordertoallowCIEtocheckaccuraythestandardofassessment,eachCentremustrecordandsendtoCIEarecordedsampleasfollows:Centresentering1–16candidatesmustsendtherecordingsofallCentresentering17ormorecandidatesmusttherecordingsofthefirst10candidatesaccordingtocandidatetherecordingsof6candidatesspreadevenlyacrosstheabilityrange.ThecandidatesselectedshouldberepresentativeoftherangeofmarksawardedbytheCentreandshouldbespreadasevenlyaspossibleacrossthatrange.Ifpossible,therecordingsofthestrongestandtheweakestcandidatesattheCentreshouldbeincluded,withtheotherrecordingsspacedatequalintervalsinbetween.NoteCentresentering17ormorecandidatesmustsendatotalof16recordings.The(ii)candidatesmustbechosenfromcandidateswhodonotfallintocategory(i).InCentreswithjustover17candidates,CIEacceptsthismaymeanthatthecategory(ii)candidatesarenotfullyrepresentativeoftherange.Therecordingshouldbecarriedoutinaccordancewiththeinstructionsheaded‘Recordingofcandidates’(seeparagraph9).TherecordingmustbesenttoCIEtogetherwiththeModeratorcopyofthecompletedMS1marksheetandcopiesofthecompletedSpeakingExaminationWorkingMarkSheetandCoverSheetforModerationSample(seepages22and23).TwotypesofmarksheetareTheSpeakingExaminationWorkingMarkSheetisprovidedinthisbooklet(seepage22)andshouldbephotocopiedasrequired.Itisaworkingtobecompletedduringeachcandidate'sSpeakingexamination.Candidatesmustbemarkedastheyarebeingexaminedandnotafterwardsfromarecording.ThemarksforeachsectionoftheexaminationmustbeThetotalmarksmustthenbetransferredtothecomputer-printedInternalAssessmentMarkSheet(MS1)ortoCAMEOforCentressubmittingmarkselectronically.DespatchofmaterialstoCIEforExternalMarksheetsandrecordingsmustbereturnedtoCIEassoonasalltheSpeakingexaminationshavebeencompleted.ThedeadlineforreceiptbyCIEoftheseitemsis15MayfortheJuneexamination.Centresmustnotwaituntiltheendoftheassessmentperiodbeforedespatchingthem. TheBoardcopyofthecompletedInternalAssessmentMarkSheet(MS1)mustbereturnedtoCIEintheseparateenvelopeprovided.Thefollowingitemsmustbesent,toreachCIEbynolaterthan15MayfortheJunetheModeratorcopyofthecompletedInternalAssessmentMarkSheet(MS1)orasignedprint-outofthemarksfileforCentressubmittingmarkselectronicallyacopyofthecompletedSpeakingExaminationWorkingMarkacopyofthecompletedCoverSheetforModerationtherecordeddetailsofInternalModerationprocedures(onlyforCentrespermittedtousemorethanoneteacher/Examiner).CopiesofbothtypesofmarksheetaretoberetainedbytheCentreincaseofpostallossesordelays.ArrangementsfortheQuietconditions:CentresshouldensurewellinadvanceoftheSpeakingexaminationthatasuitablyquietroomwillbeavailable.Roomswhicharetooclosetoayground,recreationroomornoisyclassroomaretobeavoided.Itisessentialtoexcludeunnecessarybackgroundnoise,e.g.lawn-mowers,phones.Noticesmustbedisyedtopreventinterruptionsfrompeopleenteringtheroomunawarethatanexaminationisinprogress.Invigilation:examinationconditionsmustprevailintheareawheretheSpeakingexaminationtakesce,includingthespacesetasideforacandidatetostudytheroleysituations.Adequatesupervisionmustbeprovidedtoensurethateachcandidatecanstudyaloneandinsilenceandthatcandidatesleavingtheinterviewroomdonotcommunicatewiththosewaitingtoenter.Candidatesarenotallowedtobringanynotesforuseduringtheirpreparationtime.Noraretheyallowedtomakenotes.Theexaminationroom:Centresshouldensurethatasuitably-sized,e.g.nottoobig,roomwillbeavailable.Candidatesmustbeexaminedsingly.Noother shouldbepresentduringtheexaminationwiththeexceptionofanotherteacher/ExamineroranOfficerfromCIE.Inthosecaseswhereitisnecessaryforasecondteacher/ExaminertobepresentduringtheSpeakingexamination,onlyoneteacher/Examinermustconducteachexamination.Theteacher/Examinershouldbepositionedsothattheyfacethecandidateswhentheyentertheroom,withatablebetweenthemselvesandthecandidates.Candidatesshouldnotbepositionedwheretheycanseewhattheteacher/Examineriswritingonthemarksheetsasthiscanbedistracting.Teacher/Examinersmustnotsmokeintheexaminationroomorinthepresenceofcandidates.Smokersshouldarrangeforbreaksinthetimetableasnecessary.ConductoftheTeacher/Examinersshoulddotheirbesttoputcandidatesattheirease,e.g.bysmilingwhentheyentertheroom,andindicatingwheretheyshouldsit.Agoodteacher/Examinerwillusuallysendacandidateoutoftheinterviewroomsmiling,nomatterhowgoodorbadtheperformancehasbeen.However,theuseofexpressionssuchas‘verygood’,whichcandidatesmayinterpretasacommentonperformance,shouldbeavoided.Inaddition,teacher/Examinersshouldnotwalkaboutordistractcandidatesinanyway(e.g.bydoodlingorfiddlingwithpapers,etc.);shouldalwaysappearinterested,eveninmundanematters;shouldnevershowunduesurprise,impatienceormockery;andshouldnevercorrectacandidate.RecordingofTheCentreisresponsibleforsupplyingblankcassettes/CDsfortherecordingofitsmoderationsample:thesewillnotbedbyCIE.TheCentreisalsoresponsibleforsupplyingrecordingequipment(e.g.cassetterecorderandmicrophone).Allrecordingequipment,includingcassettes/CDs,mustbeofashighastandardaspossibletoensurethatmoderationsamplesareclearlyaudible.Inordertoensurethatrecordinglevelsaresatisfactoryforbothcandidatesandteacher/Examiner,theequipmenttobeusedmustbetestedinsitusometimebeforetheactualexamination,ideallywithoneofthecandidates.Ifatallpossible,externalmicrophonesshouldbeusedsothatseparatemicrophonescanbeusedforthecandidateandtheteacher/Examiner.Ifonlyonemicrophoneisuseditshouldbecednearertothecandidatethantotheteacher/Examiner.Withasoftly-spokencandidatethemicrophoneshouldbecedevennearertothecandidatebeforethestartoftheexamination.ModerationsamplesmustberecordedatnormalspeedontoeitherC90audiocassettesorstandardformatCDs.MinicassettesandminiCDsmustnotbeused.WhereCentresmakeuseofdigitalrecordingsoftware,eachcandidate'sfilemustbesavedindividuallyandsavedas.mp3sothatitcanbeaccessedforthepurposesofmoderation.IfC90cassettesareused,theseare45minutespersideandtherefore6Speakingexaminationsshouldfitoneachcassette,3oneachside.AnaudioCDwillrecordapproximay80minutesofsound/5candidates.Therecordingmustnotbestoppedonceacandidate’sexaminationhasEachcassette/CDmustbeintroducedbytheteacher/Examiner,asfollows:‘Cassette/CDnumber...Centrenumbere.g.HK215Centrenamee.g.King’sCollegeExaminationnumber0547ExaminationnameIGCSEMandarinNameofExaminere.g.MrRPetersDatee.g.2ndMarchEachcandidatemustbeintroducedbytheteacher/Examiner,asfollows:‘CandidateNumbere.g.047CandidateNamee.g.WilliamLeeRoleyCarde.g.Number4’AfterthelastrecordingonsideAofacassettetheteacher/Examinermustannounce‘Nomorerecordingsonthisside.RecordingcontinuesonsideB’.Cassettesmustbewoundontotheendbeforeturningoverorstartinganewcassette.Afterthelastcandidateoneachcassette/CD,theteacher/Examinermustannounce‘endofcassette/CDno’;andafterthelastcandidateonthelastcassette/CD‘endofexamination’.Eachcassetteboxmustbeclearlylabelledwithsyllabusname, ponentnumber,Centrename/numberandcandidatename/numberinrecordingorder.EachCDmustbelabelledwithsyllabus/componentnumberandCentrenumber.CDfriendlymarkerpensmustbeusedtolabelCDsastheuseofbiro,forexample,maymakethecontentsoftheCDunreadable.EachrecordedfileontheCDmustbeclearlynamedusingthefollowingconvention:Centrenumber_candidatenumber_syllabus ponentnumber.Beforecassettes/CDsaredespatched,spotchecksmustbemadetoensurethateverycandidateisclearlyaudible.Cassettesmustthenberewoundtothestartofside1.Ifforanyreasonthecassette/CDhasfailedtorecordorthereareproblemswiththeaudibilityoftherecordings,theCentremustcontactCIECustomerServicesimmediaytoseekadvice.InternalWhereCentreswithlargenumbersofcandidatesrequestpermissionfromCIEtousemorethanoneteacher/ExaminertoconductandassesstheSpeakingexaminationfortheircandidates,thiswillbegrantedontheunderstandingthatthefollowingproceduresareputince.ThepurposeoftheseproceduresistoensurethatmarkssubmittedbytheCentreareconsistentforallcandidates,irrespectiveofwhichteacher/Examinerconductedandassessedtheexamination:Theteacher/ExaminersconductingandassessingSpeakingexaminationsattheCentremustworktogethertoensureacommonapproachtotheconductoftheSpeakingexaminationandtheapplicationofthemarkscheme.Oneteacher/ExaminerattheCentremusttakeresponsibilityforthestandardisationofthemarkingofteacher/ExaminersattheCentre.This mustensurethatallcandidatestakingthe0547/03SpeakingtestattheCentrearejudgedagainstthesamestandardsandthatavalidrankorderofcandidatesfortheCentreasawholeisproduced.Standardisationcantakevariousforms,buttheinitialmarkingofeachcandidatemustbedoneasthetestisbeingconductedandnotonthebasisofarecording.TheSpeakingtestsofallcandidatesattheCentremustberecorded.AsinglerecordedsampleforExternalModerationshouldthenbeproducedaccordingtotheinstructionsinparagraph4(Recordedsample),withtheadditionalrequirementthatthesampleshould,asfaraspossible,includeequalnumbersofrecordingsfromeachteacher/ExaminerusedattheCentre.ASpeakingExaminationWorkingMarkSheetshouldbesubmittedforeachteacher/Examiner,withcandidatenamesandnumbersclearlyentered.ThefinalcolumnontheWorkingMarkSheet(Internaland/orExternalModeration)mustbeusedtorecordtheresultsofInternalModerationanddetailsoftheCentre’sInternalModerationproceduresmustbeenclosedwiththematerialsforExternalModeration.GuidelinesfortheInternalStandardisation/ModerationofCambridgeIGCSEforeignlanguageSpeakingtestsareavailablefromCIE.STRUCTUREOFTHETest1: ys(about5minutes)30AnumberofalternativeroleycardsaredbyCIE,andtheseshouldbeusedatrandomtworoleysituations(RoleyAandRoleyB).Eachofthesesituationsconsistsoffivetasks(numbered1-5ontheRoleyCards).Candidatesmustbeexaminedinbothroleysituationsonthecardtheyhavebeengivenandmustcompleteallthetasksspecifiedontheircard.Havinggiventhefirstcandidate15minutestopreparehis/hertwosituations,theteacher/Examinershouldhandadifferentcardtothesecondcandidatetopreparewhilethefirstcandidateisbeingexamined.Candidatesmaynotmakewrittennotesduringtheirpreparationtime.TheymaytaketheRoleyCardtheyhavepreparedintotheexaminationroom.However,theymaynottaketheRoleyCardawaywiththemoncetheSpeakingexaminationisover.Teacher/Examinersshouldnotethatalthoughthetimingfortheroleysisgivenas5minutes,theactualtimeittakestocompletethemwilloftenbelessandwillvaryfromcandidatetocandidate.Foreachroleysituation,theroleoftheteacher/Examinerisspecifiedonpages16–21ofthisbooklet.Usually,theteacher/Examinerhastoinitiatethedialogue.Theteacher/Examineristoassumetheroleofawell-disposednativespeakerwithnoknowledgeofthecandidate’sfirstTeacher/ExaminersmustpreparethesituationscarefullyandensurethattheyytheirroleasprescribedbyCIEinorderthatcandidatesaregiventheopportunitytoattemptalltherequiredtasks.Theteacher/Examinermustnotcreateextratasks,normusts/heomittasks.Eachsituationmustbecarriedoutinfull.Ifthecandidatecannothandleoneofthetasksset,theteacher/Examinershouldnotleavetoolongapause,butshouldleadthecandidateontothenextShouldacandidatemissoutatask,theteacher/Examinershouldtrytoguidehim/herbacktoit,inasnaturalawayaspossible,e.g.byrepeatingorrephrasingaquestionifthecandidatefailstocompletethetaskatthefirstattemptorgivesanambiguousresponse.ItdoesnotmattertoModeratorsthatthismayleadtotasksoccurringinadifferentorder,aslongastheyareallattempted.However,teacher/Examinersmustensurethatwhenrephrasingatasktheydonotchangeitsnature,e.g.ifthetaskrequiresacandidatetoproduceaparticularvocabularyitemandthisisinfactdbytheteacher/Examiner,nocreditcanbegiven.Formarkscheme,seeTableAoftheMarkingThispartoftheexaminationstartswithaonetotwominutepresentationbythecandidateonatopicoftheirchoicewhichtheywillhavepreparedinadvance.Theteacher/ExaminerwillfollowupthepresentationwithspecificquestionsonthetopicbringingthetotaltimefortheTopicPresentationandTopicConversationtoapproximay5minutes.ItisnotexpectedthatallcandidateswithinaCentrewillpreparethesametopic.Candidatesmustbeencouragedtochooseatopicinwhichtheyhavea alinterest.Suitablesubjectsmightbe,forexample:‘Schoollife’,‘Hobbiesandpastimes’(generalorspecific),‘Mycountry’,‘Lifeinanothercountry’,‘Myambitions’,‘Holidays’.Topicsdealingwithpoliticsorsocialandeconomicissuesareambitiousforthislevelofachievementandmaydisadvantagecandidatesiftheydonotpossessthelinguisticskillsandmaturityofideaswhichsuchtopicsnecessitate.Candidatesshouldnotbeallowedtopresent‘Myself’or‘Mylife’astopicsasthesecanoftenpre-empttheGeneralConversationsection.Candidatesmayuseillustrativematerial,e.g.photographs,ifthisseemsappropriatetotheirtopic,butarenotallowedtousewrittennotesofanykind.Theteacher/ExaminermustallowthecandidatetospeakforonetotwominutesuninterruptedontheirchosentopicbeforestartingtheTopicConversation.WhereacandidatehasbeentalkingfortwominutesandshowsnosignoffinishingtheirTopicPresentation,theteacher/ExaminermustinterruptandstarttheTopicConversation.IntheTopicConversation,candidatesshouldbeabletorespondtotheteacher/Examiner'squestionsinaspontaneousandnaturalmanner.Itistheextenttowhichcandidatescanmanipulatetheirpreparedmaterialaccordingtotheneedsoftheteacher/Examinerthatdeterminestheirmarks:candidatesmustnotbeallowedtodeliverapreparedmonologueoraseriesofobviouslypreparedreplies.Theteacher/Examinermusttrytoextendthecandidateasfaraspossiblebygivingthemtheopportunitytoprovideopinionsandjustificationsanduseavarietyoftimeframes.Inordertoextendthecandidateasfaraspossible,theteacher/Examinershouldprobe,explore,askforexnations,enlargements,descriptions(how?when?why?lmeabitmoreabout…etc.).Formarkscheme,seeTableBoftheMarkingTest3:GeneralConversation(about5minutes)30toGeneralConversation.ItcanbehelpfultoeasethecandidateintotheGeneralConversationeitherbystartingoutfromapointofinterestnotedearlier,orbyaskingacoupleofgeneral‘starter’questionsrelatingtothecandidate’severydaylife.QuestioningintheGeneralConversationmustnotcoverthesamematerialastheTopicConversation,e.g.ifthecandidatehastalkedaboutSportintheTopicConversation,itisnotappropriatefortheteacher/ExaminertoreturntothistopicintheGeneralConversation.TheGeneralConversationmustlastthestipulated5minutesforeachcandidate.Somecandidatesmaydryupafterafewminutes,butitisimportanttoperseverewiththeconversation(e.g.bycompletechangesofsubject),sothattheyaregiveneveryopportunitytodothemselvesjustice.Theteacher/ExaminershouldaimtocoveratleasttwoorthreeoftheDefinedContentTopicsinthissectionoftheexamination(thesearelistedintheCurriculumContentsectionofthesyllabusbooklet).Examplesofsuitabletopicsareschool(subjects,numberofperiods,times,games,etc.),home,town,journeytoandfromschool,time(evenings,weekends),holidays,hobbies.Allcandidatescanreasonablybeexpectedtohavethecommandofvocabularyandidiomnecessarytodiscussthesetopics.Precisefactualinformationorknowledgeisnotrequired,andcandidatesshouldnotbepenalisedforlackofsuchknowledge.Theteacher/Examinershouldbereadytopassonquicklytoanothertopicifcandidatesareobviouslyoutoftheirdepth.Careshouldbetakentoavoidquestionswhichmightcauseembarrassment,e.g.whereacandidatehasonlyoneparent.(Centresarerequestedtosupplysuchinformationtotheteacher/Examinerinadvance.)Candidatesareexpectedtogivenaturalrepliestoquestionssotheiranswersneednotbeintheformofcompletesentences.However,candidateswhoseconversationconsistslargelyofmonosyllabicordisjointedrepliescannotgainmuchcreditforsuchaperformance,anditisthereforetheteacher/Examiner'sresponsibilitytoavoidquestionsinvitinganswersofsimply‘yes’or‘no’.Instead,theteacher/Examinermustuseavarietyofquestiontypesandinterrogativeadverbs,rangingfromabasiclevelofsimplequestionswhichdemandshortpredictableresponses,e.g.when?howmany?howlong?withwhom?withwhat?how?etc.tomoresearchingquestionssuchaswhy?lmeabout…whatdoyouthinkabout?Questionsshouldbeadjustedtothecandidate’sability.However,asintheTopicConversation,theteacher/Examinermusttrytoextendthecandidateasfaraspossiblebygivingthemtheopportunitytoprovideopinionsandjustificationsanduseavarietyoftimeframes(themescouldbepastvisitstoothercountries,nsforthefuture,etc.).Moreablecandidatesmaynotbeabletodothemselvesjusticeifthemorestretchingquestionsareavoided.Candidatesshouldbepromptedandencouragedwherenecessaryandlongsilencesshouldbeavoided.However,acandidateshouldnotbeinterruptedunlessitisclearthatheorshecannotcompletetheanswer.Incorrectanswersshouldneverbecorrected,noranswersdwhennonearegiven.Questionsshouldberephrased(ratherthanrepeated)inanattempttomaintainthedialogue.Theuseofvocabularyorphrasesfromthecandidate’sfirstlanguageshouldbeavoided,sofexaminations,typesofschool,etc.Theteacher/Examinermustavoidtalkingtoomuchthemselvesandlimitingtheamountoftimeavailabletothecandidatetoshowwhattheycando.Theonusisonthecandidatetoshowthatheorshecanconverseadequayinthelanguage,butatthesametimeitisuptotheteacher/Examinertomakesurethatthecandidateisgiveneveryopportunitytodosobyfollowingupanyopeninggiven.Formarkscheme,seeTableBoftheMarkingImpression10Attheendoftheexamination,theteacher/Examinermustmakeanassessmentofthecandidate’spronunciation,accentandfluencybasedonthecandidate’
