北京威久留學(xué)專(zhuān)家張宏:推薦信可能是所有申請(qǐng)文件中最為重要的一項(xiàng)。推薦信的篇幅一般英文成稿約為300~400字。推薦信最忌諱寫(xiě)成類(lèi)似中國(guó)教師給學(xué)生寫(xiě)的評(píng)語(yǔ),每個(gè)人都適用。面面俱到,詳略不當(dāng)也是不可取的。此外評(píng)價(jià)亦忌太過(guò)夸張,好似申請(qǐng)人的現(xiàn)有程度已經(jīng)不需要任何進(jìn)修或?qū)ι暾?qǐng)人的過(guò)度吹捧使推薦人本身的層次和程度大打折扣。

推薦信寫(xiě)作應(yīng)注意以下幾點(diǎn):推薦人最好選擇自己的授課或論文指導(dǎo)教師。當(dāng)然假設(shè)能找到大學(xué)招生負(fù)責(zé)人都認(rèn)可或熟知的推薦人更好,如國(guó)際知名學(xué)者教授等。假設(shè)申請(qǐng)人是普通學(xué)生而選擇職位很高的推薦人〔如學(xué)校校長(zhǎng)〕,應(yīng)該解釋清楚推薦人是怎樣理解到申請(qǐng)人的。同時(shí)在第一段就應(yīng)介紹清楚推薦人和申請(qǐng)人的關(guān)系。

推薦信的核心還是應(yīng)該和申請(qǐng)人的學(xué)業(yè)成績(jī)和學(xué)術(shù)才能?chē)?yán)密相關(guān),應(yīng)注意與所申請(qǐng)專(zhuān)業(yè)的結(jié)合。如申請(qǐng)管理類(lèi)課程,勿用大量篇幅描寫(xiě)輔修計(jì)算機(jī)的成績(jī),反之亦然。推薦信在提出申請(qǐng)人優(yōu)點(diǎn)時(shí),應(yīng)防止泛泛而談,最好附以詳細(xì)事例,當(dāng)然有數(shù)據(jù)支持更有說(shuō)服力。如:排名10/200〔200人中前10名〕,多少天完成實(shí)驗(yàn),成功率如何。另外推薦教師如為論文或畢業(yè)設(shè)計(jì)指導(dǎo)教師,可提及論文或畢設(shè)大致情況,來(lái)說(shuō)明被推薦人的研究或理論才能。

申請(qǐng)人其他方面的優(yōu)點(diǎn),如團(tuán)隊(duì)精神,開(kāi)朗性格、品質(zhì)、對(duì)科學(xué)研究的執(zhí)著等也可簡(jiǎn)單提及作為補(bǔ)充內(nèi)容,這些是要求一個(gè)研究者必備的素質(zhì)。

加注評(píng)語(yǔ)?!参濉持厥鐾扑]者對(duì)申請(qǐng)人的支持及才能確實(shí)認(rèn),以再次肯定對(duì)申請(qǐng)人的支持與推薦。美國(guó)留學(xué)申請(qǐng)推薦信的形式推薦信的格式有些形式可循,以下將針對(duì)各段提供形式作參考:〔一〕抬頭可用的格式有:DearSir/Madam;ToWhomItMayConcern:〔二〕第一段:引文句子可以引用如:“Itisapleasuretoremendtoyou(name),aformerstudentofmineat(nameofuniversity).〞“Iamveryhappytohavethisopportunitytoremend(name),whoispresentlyapplyingforadmissiontoyourgraduate(orundergraduate)programin(nameofprogram).〞“Iunderstandthat(name)isapplyingforadmissionstoyour

graduate(undergraduate)school,andhasrequestedthatIwritethisletterofremendationforher/him.〞“InmycapacityasprofessoratxxxxUniversity,Ihaveknownxxxforthreeyears,asbothhis/heradvisorandprofessor.〞

〔三〕第二段:這段可以提供最本質(zhì)的內(nèi)容。譬如,假設(shè)推薦者是教授,解釋學(xué)生在他門(mén)下所修的課程?!?name)tooktwoofmycoursesduringthe1984-85academicyear,asfollows;“xxxxx〞and“xxxxx〞.〞“(Name)waseolledinthreeofclassesfromSeptember1984toJune1986“xxx〞and“xxx〞.〞接下來(lái),教授寫(xiě)一些有關(guān)申請(qǐng)人在課堂上的表現(xiàn),如完成的研究方案、實(shí)驗(yàn)室研究、研究報(bào)告、考試的成績(jī)、課堂態(tài)度、討論課的參與等,舉出實(shí)例?!癐nmyclass(es),(name)didexcellentwork.Shealwayslistenedattentively,participatedactivitelyinclass,andhandedinverygoodwrittenassignment.“Inparticular,his/herresearchpaperon(topic)wasofexceptionallyhighquality,andshowedthats/hefullyunderstandsandhasastrongbackgroundinhis/herfield.〞假設(shè)推薦人是工作主管,首先一定要仔細(xì)陳述申請(qǐng)人的工作職責(zé),并對(duì)申請(qǐng)者工作表現(xiàn)作一評(píng)估。假設(shè)可能的話盡量列舉實(shí)例?!癢hen(name)heldthepositionof(jobtitle)inthispanyshewasones/hewasoneofmybestemployees.His/herjobresponsibilitiesincluded(describethem),ands/hecarriedouthis/herdutieswithexceptionalskillandprofessionalism.〞“S/henotonlydidhis/herownwork,butalsohelpedotheremployees,andmademanyvaluablecontributionstotheefficientrunningtoourfirm.〞第二段最后一段:可以提及申請(qǐng)人在班上〔或公司里〕的比擬表現(xiàn)〔譬如排名〕:“Iwasrate(name)'sacademicabilityasinthetop10%ofhis/herclass.〞“paredagainstotherstudentsthatIhavetaught,Iwouldsaythat(name)ranksintheupper10%.接下來(lái),推薦者可對(duì)申請(qǐng)人能否成功完成學(xué)業(yè)提出看法。舉例:“Basedonhis/herpreviousperformance,Iamcertainthat(name)wouldbeaverysuccessfulstudentatyouruniversity.〞“Ibelievethat(name)possessesallthequalitiesnecessarytomakeanexcellentgraduatestudentinhis/herchosenfield,andamsurethats/hewillmakeafineadditiontoyourcampus.〞〔四〕第三段:假設(shè)還有其它話想說(shuō),請(qǐng)另寫(xiě)一段.例如:英文才能、溝通技巧、指導(dǎo)才能、特殊學(xué)術(shù)或工作背景。譬如說(shuō),假設(shè)申請(qǐng)人欲申請(qǐng)的科系是企管系,推薦者可著力描寫(xiě)他們有關(guān)申請(qǐng)人商業(yè)的專(zhuān)門(mén)技術(shù)、指導(dǎo)才能,以及申請(qǐng)者所參加的商業(yè)活動(dòng),例如,有關(guān)商業(yè)方面的組織社團(tuán)。又如,申請(qǐng)人申請(qǐng)護(hù)理研究所,推薦者可著力描寫(xiě)他們關(guān)心的態(tài)度、處理實(shí)驗(yàn)室的技能,或是對(duì)病人的奉獻(xiàn)。〔五〕最后,以幾句結(jié)尾作總結(jié);“Therefore,Iamhappytohighlyandwithoutreservationremend(name)foradmissiontoyourgraduateprogram.Yourkind/seriousconsiderationofhis/herapplicationwouldbemostappreciated.〞“Iamthuspleasedtogivemyfullsupportandremendationto(name)'s
