Likeotheryoungmen,Ilovetheinternet.Tobehonest,Icouldnotimaginealifewithoutinternet,whichisablessingtakenbyhightechnology.Tosomeextent,itrepresentsthewholeworldtome.IhaveregisteredsomeaccountsonMySpace,Facebook,Twitter,Renren,Weiboandsoforth.It’sreallyamazingbecausethesenetworktechnologiesmakeitpossibleforpeopleallovertheworldtocommunicatewitheachotherfreelyandconveniently.

However,therearetwosidestotheargument,sowhatoftheinternet.Whileitcouldlightenourlife,itcouldalsoturnintoevil.Itstartedwithsomeofthesearguments—well,itisargumentatfirst—thenthesituationseemsoutofcontrol:peoplestarttocurseandscoldeachotherjustbecausetheyhavedifferentopinions.Peoplebecamemoreandmoreaggressive,seditious,andinsulting,andlateron,withthe“Human-fleshsearching”involved,thesituationgetsevenworse.Thosearewhatwecalled“Networkofviolence”,theyarestillhappening,andstillgoingon.

Itseemslikethattheinternetfreesusfromtheburdenofourpublicidentitiessoweshouldbeourtrue,authenticselvesonline,exceptitturnsout—whowouldn’tseethatcoming—thatourtrue,authenticselvesaren’tthatfantastic.

Thereasonwedefineourselvesashumanisbecausewehavesomenaturalinstinctstocareforandrespectotherpeople.Inotherwords,wearepursuingtheuniversalbrotherhood,apeacefulworldoffreeminds.Itishumanismthatkeepsoursocietymovingonandon.

Asoneofthemostimportantinventionsinourtime,internethaschangedthewayofourlifetremendously.Ithaschangedthewayweexpressandcommunicatewitheachother.Ithasmadeitpossibleforustomeeteachotherwithoutdistance;ithasmadeiteasierforustoknowandtocomprehendeachother.

Howevernotonlysomechangeshasitbrought,butalsobroughtonsomechallenges.NethasanarchyinitsDNA,It’salwaysbeenaboutanonymity,playingwithyourownidentityandmessingwithotherpeople’sheads.Itisachallenge,itchallengesourself-disciplinethatweareproudof,itchallengesourhumanitythatweareproudof.Suretechnologypromisesusmorefreedombutitdoesn’tmeanthatweshouldleaveourcivilizationbehind.

OnarecenttriptoJapan,Iwasimpressedby,amongotherthings,agadgetinmostpublicwomen'srestrooms,calledOtohimeorSoundPrincess.Thisdeviceproducesthesoundofflushingwaterwithouttheneedforactualflushing.Thetechnologysavestheuserboththeembarrassmentofbeingheardduringurinationandsome20litersofwaterperuseincaseswhereawomanmightflushthetoiletcontinuouslywhileusingit.

EverytimeIusedOtohime,Ifeltlikeaprincess,anenvironmentalistprincessonthetoilet.

Itwasalongedforfeeling.Overthepastdecade,IshuffledinandoutofmanykindsofpublicrestroomsinChina--filthysmellywaterclosetsinoutlyingareas,spaciousluxuriouslavatoriesinfive-starhotels,forever-occupiedgirls'stallsoncampusduringschool,andsmartmodernmobiletoiletsininternationalfairs.Butnotonesingle"room"evokedmyprideofbeingaprincess.

Humanism,nomatterhowitisdefined,aimstostrikeabalancebetweenusbeingatthemercyofnatureandbeingtoohuman-centered.Inmycase,Ihaven'trelievedmyselfunderatreeforawhile.Iamaproud,dutifulChinesecitizen.Gonearethedayswhenpeoplejustfoundacornertodotheirbusinessresultinginpoorsanitationandthreatstopublichealth.TheOtohimetechnologyrendersmetwowarnings:First,Iamahumblehumanbeingwithanobligationtosavenotonlymyfacebutalsonaturalresources.Second,thereisstillalongwaytogoinmyowncountrynotjustindevelopingtechnologyandtheeconomy,butalsoinupholdinghumandignityandpromotinghumanwelfare.Takethetoilet:Dirty,crowdedtoiletsshall,atleast,givewaytoclean,human-friendlyones.

Irefusetoacceptthenegative,narrow-minded,causticopinionsthattechnologyiserodingoursouls.Isaytothem,letthemachinescontinuetheirmonotonouscacophony,forjustonesmilingfaceisinfinitelymorevaluablethanathousandchurnersofbinarycode;lettechnologicalprogressdevelopanddevelopuntilitpoeticallydevoursitself,becauseoneheartfelt"hello"toafellowtravellercanspeaklibrariesofwarmth;letthepowermongersandoilbaronspufftheirlastcigars,becausetheloveandcare,andwarmthofhumanismwillalwaysshinelikebeacon,reachingouttoeachandeveryheartonthissmallplanet.
