Clinton'sFarewellSpeech（BillMyfellowcitizens,tonightismylastopportunitytospeaktoyoufromtheOvalOfficeasyour.Iamprofoundlygratefultoyoufortwicegivingmethehonortoserve,toworkforyouandwithyoutoprepareournationforthe21stcentury.AndI'mgratefultoViceGore,tomyCabinetsecretaries,andtoallthosewhohaveservedwithmeforthelasteightyears.Thishasbeenatimeofdramatictransformation,andyouhaverisentoeverynewchallenge.Youhavemadeoursocialfabricstronger,ourfamilieshealthierandsafer,ourpeoplemoreprosperous.You,theAmericanpeople,havemadeourpassageintotheglobalinformationageaneraofgreatAmericanrenewal.InalltheworkIhavedoneas,everydecisionIhavemade,everyexecutiveactionIhavetaken,everybillIhaveproposedandsigned,I'vetriedtogiveallAmericansthetoolsandconditionstobuildthefutureofourdreams,inagoodsociety,withastrongeconomy,acleanerenvironment,andar,safer,moreprosperousworld.Ihavesteeredmycoursebyourenduringvalues,opportunityforall,responsibilityfromall,acommunityofallAmericans.IhavesoughttogiveAmericaanewkindofernment,smaller,moremodern,moreeffective,fullofideasandpoliciesappropriatetothisnewtime,alwaysputtingpeoplefirst,alwaysfocusingonthefuture.Workingtogether,Americahasdonewell.Oureconomyisbreakingrecords,withmorethan22millionnewjobs,thelowestunemploymentin30years,thehighesthomeownershipever,thelongestexpansioninhistory.Ourfamiliesandcommunitiesarestronger.Thirty-fivemillionAmericanshaveusedthefamilyleavelaw.Eightmillionhavemovedoffwelfare.Crimeisata25-yearlow.Over10millionAmericansreceivemorecollegeaid,andmorepeoplethaneveraregoingtocollege.Ourschoolsarebetter-higherstandards,greateraccountabilityandlargerinvestmentshavebroughthighertestscores,andhighergraduationrates.Morethanthreemillionchildrenhavehealthinsurancenow,andmorethan7millionAmericanshavebeenliftedoutofpoverty. esarerisingacrosstheboard.Ourairandwaterarecleaner.Ourfoodanddrinkingwateraresafer.Andmoreofourpreciouslandhasbeenp,inthecontinentalUnitedStates,thanatanytimein100Americahasbeena forpeaceandprosperityineverycorneroftheglobe.I'mverygratefultobeabletoturnoverthereinsofleadershiptoanew,withAmericainsuchastrongpositiontomeetthechallengesofthefuture.Tonight,Iwanttoleaveyouwiththreethoughtsaboutourfuture.First,Americamustmaintainourrecordoffiscalresponsibility.Throughourlastfourbudgets,we'veturnedrecorddeficitstorecordsurpluses,andwe'vebeenabletopaydown$600billionofournationaldebt,ontracktobedebt bytheendofthedecadeforthefirsttimesince1835.Stayingonthatcoursewillbringlowerinterestrates,greaterprosperityandtheopportunitytomeetourbigchallenges.Ifwechoosewisely,wecanpaydownthedebt,dealwiththeretirementofthebabyboomers,investmoreinourfutureandprovidetaxSecond,becausetheworldismoreconnectedeverydayineveryway,America'ssecurityandprosperityrequireustocontinuetoleadintheworld.Atthisremarkablemomentinhistory,morepeopleliveindomthateverbefore.Ouralliancesarestrongerthanever.PeopleallaroundtheworldlooktoAmericatobeaforpeaceandprosperity, domandsecurity.Theglobaleconomyisgivingmoreofourownpeople,andbillionsaroundtheworld,thechancetoworkandliveandraisetheirfamilieswithdignity.Butthesofintegrationthathavecreatedthesegoodopportunitiesalsomakeusmoresubjecttoglobal sofdestruction,toterrorism,organizedcrimeandnarco-trafficking,thespreadofdeadlyweaponsanddisease,thedegradationoftheglobalTheexpansionoftradehasn'tfullyclosedthegapbetweenthoseofuswholiveonthecuttingedgeoftheglobaleconomyandthebillionsaroundtheworldwholiveontheknife'sedgeofsurvival.Thisglobalgaprequiresmorethancompassion.Itrequiresaction.Globalpovertyisapowderkegthatcouldbeignitedbyourindifference.Inhisfirstinauguraladdress,ThomasJeffersonwarnedofentanglingalliances.Butinourtimes,Americacannotandmustnotdisentangleitselffromtheworld.Ifwewanttheworldtoembodyoursharedvalues,thenwemustassumeasharedresponsibility.Ifthewarsofthe20thcentury,especiallytherecentonesinKosovoandBosnia,havetaughtusanything,itisthatweachieveouraimsbydefendingourvaluesandleadingthesofdomandpeace.Wemustembraceboldlyandresoluythatdutytolead,tostandwithouralliesinwordanddeed,andtoputahumanfaceontheglobaleconomysothatexpandedtradebenefitsallpeopleinallnations,liftinglivesandhopesallacrosstheworld.Third,wemustrememberthatAmericacannotleadintheworldunlesshereathomeweweavethethreadsofourcoatofmanycolorsintothefabricofoneAmerica.Asweeevermorediverse,wemustworkhardertounitearoundourcommonvaluesandourcommonhumanity.Wemustworkharderto
