Withaheavysigh,Tombroughtthecartoastop,restinghisheadonthesteeringwheel,defeated!Afterafewseconds,helookedupandpeeredoutofthewindow.Therainseemedtohaveeasedalittle,andinthedistance,hecouldseealighttwinklingintheblackness.Withasenseofhopefulanticipation,Tomgentlyeasedthecartowardsthelight.Ashegotcloser,hecouldseealongdrivewayleadingtoasolitaryhouse.

湯姆瞥了一眼后視鏡,里面能看到后座上他的輪椅。他很快低下頭,看了看自己瘦弱的斷腿。一陣熟悉的絕望感像個(gè)浪頭一樣從上面向他襲來。暴雨還在敲打著車頂,他覺得自己就像被困在一面鼓里。外面的世界將他緊緊包裹,他大口喘著粗氣。突然間一聲巨響,把他從絕望中震醒了,車子頓時(shí)顛簸起來。“得,”他心說,“車胎爆了?!?/p>

湯姆長嘆一口氣,把車停了,一頭趴在方向盤上,真是太沮喪了!過了幾秒鐘,他抬起頭往窗外張望。雨似乎小了一點(diǎn)兒,遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)地,黑暗中隱約可見一團(tuán)忽明忽暗的燈光。湯姆心中燃起一絲希望,朝著燈光小心翼翼地慢慢駛?cè)???拷倏磿r(shí),發(fā)現(xiàn)有一條長長的車道,通向一座孤零零的房子。

“Waitaminute,”thegirlreplied.Sheturnedandwentintothehouse.Afewminuteslater,shereturnedwithanoldman.Thegirlheldhisarmandsmiledlovinglyupathim.

“HowcanIhelp”theoldmanaskedwithasmileonhisface.

Tomexplainedtheproblemandadded,“Ineedhelpbecausemylegsareparalysed.”Thewordscameoutflat.Buthedidnotknowhowelsehecouldconveythefactthatheneededhelpfromthisweakoldmaninthemiddleoftherainstorm.TheoldmansimplynoddedhisheadandaskedTomtoopenthebootofhiscar.Withthehelpofhisyoungassistant,theoldmanquicklygottowork.Occasionally,Tomleanedoutofthewindowtoseehowtheyweredoingwiththerepairs.Thetwowereconcentratingontheirwork,andtherainwassoakingthem.Onceagain,Tomcouldn’thelpbutfeelhewasuseless.

湯姆駛近那房子,見門口站著一個(gè)十歲左右的小女孩。他把車盡量靠近女孩停下來,搖下車窗。“你父母在家嗎”為了免得聲音被風(fēng)雨蓋住,他提高了嗓門。他又補(bǔ)充說:“我車胎爆了,需要人幫忙?!?/p>

“稍等一會兒。”女孩回答。說完轉(zhuǎn)身進(jìn)了家門。幾分鐘后,她回來了,還帶來一位老人。女孩挽著老人的胳膊,沖他甜美地笑著。

“需要幫忙嗎?”老人面帶笑容地問他。

湯姆把情況講了一下,又說:“我兩腿癱瘓,所以需要人幫忙?!痹捳f得有點(diǎn)直白。不過,他確實(shí)需要這位年邁體衰的老人頂著暴風(fēng)雨幫幫他,他不知道還能怎么說來表達(dá)這個(gè)意思。老人只是點(diǎn)點(diǎn)頭,讓湯姆把車子后備箱打開。很快,老人開始干活兒了,女孩給他打下手。湯姆有時(shí)會探出頭來,看看他們修得怎么樣了。兩個(gè)人聚精會神地忙活著,身子都被雨水澆透了。湯姆不由得又一次感覺自己很沒用。

Thegrandfatherwavedahandinfrontofhisfaceandsaid,“Thereisnoneed.Justbecarefulaboutgettinghomeandcontinuethechainofkindness.

Tomeasedhiscardownthedrivewayandbackontotheroad.Therainwasnowonlyalightmist,revealingtheroadahead.Ashedrovethroughthenight,hefoundhimselflookingforwardtothejourneyahead.

不久,老人走到車窗前。“都弄好了。”他說。湯姆把準(zhǔn)備好的錢遞給老人,但他卻沒有要接的意思。

最后,小女孩說了一句:“爺爺他看不見?!?/p>

湯姆不知該說什么好。沒別的辦法,他只能一邊朝祖孫倆打著手勢,一邊結(jié)結(jié)巴巴地解釋自己想付些錢,對他們的幫助略表謝意。

老人在他臉前擺了擺手說:“用不著?;丶衣飞献⒁獍踩焉埔鈧鬟f下去,這就夠了。”

湯姆開著車,慢慢沿車道返回大路?,F(xiàn)在只剩下一點(diǎn)蒙蒙雨霧,能看清前面的路了。車在夜色中行進(jìn),他感覺自己對前路充滿了期待。
