Tomexplainedtheproblemandadded,“Ineedhelpbecausemylegsareparalysed.”Thewordscameoutflat.Buthedidnotknowhowelsehecouldconveythefactthatheneededhelpfromthisweakoldmaninthemiddleoftherainstorm.TheoldmansimplynoddedhisheadandaskedTomtoopenthebootofhiscar.Withthehelpofhisyoungassistant,theoldmanquicklygottowork.Occasionally,Tomleanedoutofthewindowtoseehowtheyweredoingwiththerepairs.Thetwowereconcentratingontheirwork,andtherainwassoakingthem.Onceagain,Tomcouldn’thelpbutfeelhewasuseless.

湯姆駛近那房子，見門口站著一個(gè)十歲左右的小女孩。他把車盡量靠近女孩停下來，搖下車窗。“你父母在家嗎”為了免得聲音被風(fēng)雨蓋住，他提高了嗓門。他又補(bǔ)充說：“我車胎爆了，需要人幫忙?！?/p>

“稍等一會兒。”女孩回答。說完轉(zhuǎn)身進(jìn)了家門。幾分鐘后，她回來了，還帶來一位老人。女孩挽著老人的胳膊，沖他甜美地笑著。

“需要幫忙嗎？”老人面帶笑容地問他。

湯姆把情況講了一下，又說：“我兩腿癱瘓，所以需要人幫忙?！痹捳f得有點(diǎn)直白。不過，他確實(shí)需要這位年邁體衰的老人頂著暴風(fēng)雨幫幫他，他不知道還能怎么說來表達(dá)這個(gè)意思。老人只是點(diǎn)點(diǎn)頭，讓湯姆把車子后備箱打開。很快，老人開始干活兒了，女孩給他打下手。湯姆有時(shí)會探出頭來，看看他們修得怎么樣了。兩個(gè)人聚精會神地忙活著，身子都被雨水澆透了。湯姆不由得又一次感覺自己很沒用。
