Travelerbehavioraroundsearching,planning,andbookingtravelcontinuestofluctuatefromseasonalitytrends,shiftingconsumersentiment,borderopenings,andnumerousotherfactors.Eachquarter,weshareinsightsintoever-changingtravelerintentanddemandbasedon70petabytesofourfirst-partydatafromhundredsofmillionsoftravelersvisitingourtravelwebsitesaroundtheworld.Theseinsights,whichincludeour

latestcustomresearch,areintendedtohelpinformyouonhowtobestunderstandandreachtoday’stravelers.

InQ42022,wesawpromisingsignalspointingtoincreasedtraveleroptimismandresilience.Aswelookatthefirstquarterof2023,ourresearchanddatashowthattravelerenthusiasmcontinuestogrow.EversinceChinafullyliftedpandemicrestrictionsinearlyQ1,wesawnotablegrowthininternationalsearchdemandforAsiaPacific(APAC),apositivesignforinternationaltourismtotheregion.

WebrokethatdowngiventheinterestinAPACtravelreturning.DuringtheweekofJanuary9,therewasnearlya10%week-over-week(WoW)increaseinglobalinternationalsearchdemandforChinaafterpandemicrestrictionsliftedinthecountryonJanuary8,ledbysearchesfromAPAC(15%WoWincrease)andEMEA(10%WoWincrease).

BetweenJanuary2023andMarch2023,travelsearchesfromtheU.S.toAPACdestinationsgrewsignificantlyfollowingtheeasingofrestrictionsintheregion,including:

Searchwindowshavecontinuedtolengtheninrecentquartersastravelersareplanningfortripsfurtherout.The180+daysearchwindowincreasedby30%QoQ,drivenby75%growthinbothAPACandLatinAmerica(LATAM).LATAMandAPACalsosawstronggrowthinthe180+daywindowfordomesticandinternationalsearches,bothupbymorethan100%andnearly40%QoQ,respectively.

Globally,the91-to180-daysearchwindowsawthestrongestgrowth,witha60%increaseQoQ,ledbyEMEAthenNorthAmerica(NORAM),with90%and45%QoQincreases,respectively.EMEAsawthegreatestincreaseinthe91-to180-daysearchwindowforbothdomesticandinternationalsearches,upbyover100%andnearly70%QoQ,respectively.

Globally,the91-to180-daysearchwindowsawthe strongestgrowth,witha60%increaseQoQ,ledbyEMEA thenNorthAmerica(NORAM),with90%and45%QoQ increases,respectively.

Inourlastreport,wesharedanotableYoYincreaseinQ42022travelersearchesformid-year2023travelfromJunetoSeptember(upnearly70%),highlightingbothstrongtravelerintentandlonger-leadplanning.ThistrendcontinuedintoQ12023,witha50%YoYincreaseinsearchdemandformid-yeartravel,drivenbyAPACandEMEA,upmorethan120%and40%YoY,respectively.

Warmweatherdestinationsaretopofmindforconsumerssearchingformid-yeargetaways,withCancun,PalmadeMallorca,Denpasar,andBarcelonaonthelistoftopsearcheddestinationsfortravelfromJunetoSeptember2023.

Similarly,manyconsumersarelookingtorelaxbythewater,butthatdoesn’talwaysmeanatthebeach.Q1datashowsthatExpedia’s“pool”filteristhetopamenitiessearchfilterinEMEAand

thesecondmostusedamenitiesfilterin
