AtPekingUniversity,dubbedtheHarvardofChinabyPresidentClintononhisrecenttriptoChins,Ihavebeenastudentstaroncampusduetomyoutstandingacademicperformances.WhenIenteredintothisuniversityin1995,Ialreadystoodoutamongmycropoffreshmen,havingwonatotalofscoresinthe1995NationalCollegeEntranceExaminationsthatwasthefifthhighestinBeijing.Aferventfanofmychosensubjectofstudies,IhaveprovedmyselfasmuchofanintellectualwizardinhigherlearningasIwasingradeschool,asdemonstratedbymygrades,whichplacedmeattheverytopinmyclassof23.MyGPAinthefirstthreeyearsis89.5,ararelyseenhighgradeinPKU.MyGPAforcorecoursesisover90,farhigherthanthatofmyfellowstudents.Iwastheonlyonewhoreceived100,thefullmark,intwotheoreticalcourses,theadvancedmathematicsandappreciationoffinearts.Inpracticalcourseslikecomputerdesign,mygradeswerealsohigh,sometimesashighas96.Inrecognitionofsuchstellarperformances,IhavebeennamedthetopstudentofthedepartmentandgrantedAcademic（Excel）lenceScholarshipsforthreeconsecutiveyears.IwaselectedtheStudentRepresentativeforAcademicAffairs.

Inthefirstsemesteroftheacademicyear1996-1997,Iworkedpart-timewiththePKUTVNet,whereIwasofferedasplendidopportunitytoimprovemyabilityinjournalism.BeingaWeeklyNewsbroadcaster,Iregularlyfacedtensofthousandsofaudience,whichgreatlyincreasedmyconfidence.Ilearnttothinkindependentlyandcooperatewitotherswhendoingtheseriesreports“PKUstudents’life”,aprogramwhichwasmainlyaboutstudentrecipientsofprizesinnationalandinternationalcontests.Conductedwithcreativityanddiligence,theprogramwasplacedamongthebestprogramsinthePKUTVNet.

Unlikemostotherstudents,Ihaveneverstoppedworkingwhileinschool.FromSeptember1997on,IhavebeenworkingasaresearchassistantinCCTV’sQiantuAdvertisingCompany,thesixthbiggestinChina.Myresponsibilityistoestablishamarketdatabase.Difficultasitwas,Ihavehandleditwithoutaglitch.Ihavealsodonepart-timeworkhelpingtopromotethePresidentFoodCorporationandservedasaresearchassistantintheSDResearchAgency,aconsultingfirmspecializedinconductingmarketsurveysformultinationalsinChina.

WithspecialskillsinChinesecalligraphy,ItaughtcalligraphyintheChinaChildren’sCenter,thebestofitskindinChina.Mystudents,mostlysixtotwelveyearsold,haddifficultiesinunderstandingtheaestheticsinherentChinesecalligraphy.Tohelpthem,ItaughtthemChinesepoemsandancientcharactersinsteadofconfiningmyselftoonlycalligraphy.Theapproachturnedouttobeveryeffective,andtheirskillsimproveddramatically.Intheseandothersimilarexperiences,Igainedskillsofinterpersonalcommunication,particularlyintermsofhowtounderstandotherpeople’sproblemsandhowtohelpthemout.

ItisinmyworkingexperiencethatIfirstdevelopedthedesiretopursueadvancedstudiesinaqualitygraduateprogramintheUnitedStates.AsaninternwiththeDentsuYoungRubicamAdvertisingCorporation,oneoftheworld’slargestcommunicationsgroups,Inowwitnessfirsthandthedramaticsocialandeconomicchangesengenderedbytheproliferationofdigitaltechnologiesandincreasingcorporateglobalization.Thesechangeshavecreatedthehighlysophisticatedinformationsociety.Tryingdailytodevelopwordingsthatcouldcatchpeople’sattentioninthiscomplexsociety,Ihaveacquiredaheightenedsenseofurgencyaboutimprovingattentioninthiscomplexsociety,IhaveacquiredaheightenedsenseofurgencyaboutimprovingChina’sadvertisingindustryatboththeoreticalandpracticallevels.IbelievethatadvertisingexpertisefromsuchadvancedcountriesastheU.S.andJapanwouldcertainlyhelpChina.Inordertocommandsuchexpertiseandthenintroduceittomycountry,IammakingthisapplicationsothatIcanhaveafirmgraspoftheadvancedtheoriesandpracticesyourcountryhasdevelopedincommunicationfield,particularlyinrespectofadvertising.

IbelievethatmyEnglishproficiencyismorethansufficientformetoundertakethekindofstudiesthatIamseekingthroughthisapplication.IhavescoredwellinsuchEnglishlanguagetestsasTIEFLandGRE.Asabetterindicatorofmypracticallanguageskills,IjustfinishedtranslatinganEnglishbook“TheHistoryofGraphicDesign”intoChinesetogetherwithfourothertranslators,includingaprofessor.Mywriting,listeningandoralEnglishareasgoodasmyreading.
