Thinkforyourself新標(biāo)準(zhǔn)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)原文ThinkingforyourselfThinkingforyourselfisstillaradicalact.Thinkingforyourselfisnotapopularactivity,thoughitshouldbe.Everystepofrealprogressinoursocietyhascomefromit.Butinmostcircles,particularlyinplacesthatshapeourlives–families,schoolsandmostworkplaces–thinkingforyourselfisregardedwithsuspicion.Someinstitutionsthwartitonpurpose.Itcanbeseenasdangerous.IwasremindedofthissadfactatapartywhenafellowguestaskedmethesubjectofabookIwasplanningtowrite.Itoldhimthatitwasabouthowpeoplecanhelpeachothertothinkforthemselves."Ohdear,"hesaid,"Idon'tthinkmuchofthat;Imuchpreferpeopledoasthey'retold."Ilaterfoundoutthatheisthefourth-generationpresidentofoneofthelargestoilcompanies.Whenwasthelastorganizationalvisionstatementyousawthatincludedthewords"…todevelopourselvesintoamodelenvironmentinwhicheveryoneateverylevelcanthinkforthemselves"?Forthatmatter,whenwasthelasttimesomebodyaskedyou,"Whatdoyoureallythink,really?"andthenwaitedforyoutoansweratlength?Thisdearthshouldnotsurpriseus.Hardlyanyonehasbeenencouraged,muchlesstrained,tothinkforthemselves,andtheirteachersandparentsandbossesweren'teither.Andneitherweretheirs.(WemayhavelearnedtoreverethinkerslikeSocrates,butwealsolearnedthatthestatepoisonedhimforthinkingforhimself:notunmitigatedencouragement.)Occasionally,however,wedohaveateacherormentorwhotrulywantsustodevelopourownthinking.Theygiveusglimpses.WhenIwas13yearsold,Iwasputintoanadvancedalgebracourse.Onthefirstdaytheteacher,whowasmalignedbystudentsasahardteacherbecauseshetriedtogetthemtothink,stoodinfrontoftheblackboardandsaid,"Onthepaperinfrontofyouwritethesumofanumber."Theentireclassof35pubescentpeoplejuststaredather.Sherepeatedthedirection,"Writethesumofanumber."Iremembermyhandgatheringsweataroundthepencil.Afewheadslookeddownandtheirpencilsstartedup.Iwonderedwhatintheworldtheywerewriting.Isawthegirlacrosstheaislefrommeleanforwardandpeerovertheshoulderoftheboyinfrontofherwhowasscribblingsomething.Thenshescratchedafigureandimmediatelycovereditwithherhand.Theteacherpacedandrubbedthechalkbetweenherfingers.Iwonderedwhatshewasabouttoputontheboard.Iwasnowtheonlyonenotwriting.Ileanedbackandovermyleftshoulderwhisperedtomyfriend,"Whatisit?""Seven,"shewhisperedback.SoIwrote"7"onmypaper.Ikeptmyheaddown,hopingIlookedbusyandconfident.Aftertheagonyamongushadbecometactile,theteacheraskedusforouranswers.Thenumber7wasprevalent.Shewalkedslowlyovertotheboardandwrote:"Thereisnosuchthingasthesumofanumber."Iknewthat.Whydidn'tyouwriteit?Sarahsaiditwas7.Whydidyouaskher?Because–Idon'tknow.That'sright.Fromnowon,thinkforyourself.Iwastooscaredaroundthatteacherfortherestofmyyounglifetothinkverywellinherpresence.ButItookthemessagewithmeandgraduallyexaminedandvaluedit.Idon'trecommendhumiliatingpeopleintothinkingforthemselvesasshehad.ShecertainlydidnotcreateaThinkingEnvironmentforus.Hadsheaffirmedourintelligencefirstandspokenaboutthejoyofthinkingforourselves,hadshenotfannedourfearofher,wewouldallhavelearnedevenmorepowerfullywhatitmeanttodoourownthinking.Andwemighthavebeenabletothinkwellaroundhertoo.Butatleastsheintroducedtheconceptintomyacademiclife.
