中國學(xué)者進入典籍英譯領(lǐng)域時間相對較晚,據(jù)現(xiàn)有漢學(xué)書目統(tǒng)計,中國典籍譯本絕大多

數(shù)是由西方漢學(xué)家或獨立、或在中國合作者幫助下完成的。傳教士以降的西方譯者為中國典

籍的異域傳播做出了不可磨滅的貢獻,但以往的西方譯者翻譯中國文化典籍時,大多采取迎

合譯語讀者的翻譯策略,翻譯過程中曲解、誤譯中國文化之處比比皆是。此外,中國古代經(jīng)

典文本的語言具有語義的渾圓性、語法的意合性和修辭的空靈性這三大特點,使得絕大多數(shù)

外國學(xué)習(xí)者難以在較短的時間內(nèi)觸及中華文化的內(nèi)核。然而,典籍英譯的主要目的,是向西

方世界介紹真正的中國傳統(tǒng)文化,促進中西文化交流和發(fā)展,讓西方了解真正的中國。我們

應(yīng)當(dāng)客觀、公正地看待中國典籍翻譯實踐和接受之間的窘?jīng)r與差距,從典籍翻譯大家身上汲

取翻譯的智慧,獲取前行的指導(dǎo)和力量。在這方面,對楊憲益、戴乃迭(英國籍)合譯的與

英國人霍克斯翻譯的《紅樓夢》譯本的比較,是一個值得我們靜下心來認(rèn)真思考的課題。這

兩個譯本于20世紀(jì)70年代出版,三位譯者皆因此獲得巨大聲譽,也同時掀起了翻譯界此后

對兩種譯本經(jīng)久不息的對比研究熱潮。在這過程中,我們應(yīng)深入了解中國典籍的外譯事實,

客觀分析兩種譯本的優(yōu)長與不足,將中國的本土經(jīng)臉和理論與西方翻譯理論相結(jié)合,取其精

華,讓中國的翻譯研究與實踐在傳承和發(fā)展的良性循環(huán)中獲得升華,在實踐中不斷培養(yǎng)和提

高我們講述中國故事、構(gòu)建中國話語體系的時代能力。

翻譯思想是決定譯者翻譯行為和翻譯結(jié)果的主因,只有通過其翻譯思想,讀者才能理解

其翻譯過程中所采取的種種策略,也才能對這些策略所產(chǎn)生的譯文進行更客觀的評價。從霍

克思的譯本中可見,他對原文采取了大多時候“忠實不渝”、間或背信棄“意”的態(tài)度。為

證此言,舉個背信棄“意”的例子。《紅樓夢》第一回中,曹雪芹用了一個較長的段落交代

自己的寫作目的,并說明選用“甄士隱”和“賈雨村”作為人物姓名的緣由,為讀者理解整

部小說進行鋪墊?;艨怂荚谄渥g本中大膽地省卻了這段文字的翻譯,直接從“列位看官:你

道此書從何而來?”譯起?;艨怂嫉氖∽g,顯然不是漏譯或者不能譯,最有可能的原因,是

霍克思對其譯本藝術(shù)性的考量。為了實現(xiàn)譯本與原著在藝術(shù)性方面的等值或者說最大程度的

接近,霍克思將“忠實”的對象定位于篇章層面。楊憲益的翻譯可以稱之為“臨摹式翻譯

“臨摹”是初學(xué)書畫之法,就是照著一幅書法或者繪畫描其形而逮其神,最終達(dá)到與原作的

惟妙惟肖。臨摹者往往會將忠實原作視為自己對藝術(shù)的全部追求,楊憲益翻譯的《紅樓夢》

正是這樣一件藝術(shù)性高超的臨摹作品。

從當(dāng)下國際學(xué)界關(guān)于兩百年《紅樓夢》翻譯史及諸種譯本的斫究來看,大多數(shù)學(xué)者對楊

譯本和霍譯本給予了充分的認(rèn)可,學(xué)界就這兩種譯本的翻譯技術(shù)性問題有著相當(dāng)細(xì)致的討

論。然而我所感興趣的不是翻譯的技術(shù)性問題,而是這兩位譯家及兩種譯本的語言修辭、文

化身份、翻譯立場與翻譯策略的差異性等問題。楊憲益譯本的翻譯立場與翻譯策略更注重推

動英語貼著漢語文化觀念的地面行走,所以楊譯本不可遏制地透露出把中國文化傳統(tǒng)及其風(fēng)

俗觀念直輸給西方讀者的翻譯立場,這也是楊譯本失去西方英語讀者的重要原因之一。不同

于楊譯本,霍譯本的翻譯立場與翻譯策略超越了漢語《紅樓夢》的字面意義,而旨在探求漢

英雙語背后兩種異質(zhì)文化觀念之間相互理解與解釋的適應(yīng)性。他使用西方本土讀者諳熟且可

以接受的地道的英語及其文化、風(fēng)俗等觀念,以此來創(chuàng)造性、補充性與生成性地重構(gòu)《石頭

記》,從而完成了兩種異質(zhì)文化觀念之間的轉(zhuǎn)換生成。
