BackgroundCynicisminmodernsense:

thebeliefofacynic,whomaintainsthatpeopleareallmotivatedbyselfishness,thatnoonewillhelpothersforgoodandsincerereasons2.Whatarethemajortenets(principles)ofCynicism?Doyoufindanyexpressionsoftheseprinciplesinthetext?self-sufficiencyshamelessnessoutspokennessperfectionofvirtueDiogenes犬儒主義〔Cynicism〕是個外來詞,中文里本來沒有現(xiàn)成的對應(yīng)詞匯,通常將它理解為譏誚嘲諷,憤世嫉俗,玩世不恭。和玩世不恭恰恰相反,早期的犬儒是極其嚴(yán)肅的,狄奧根尼是一個劇烈的社會批評家。他立志要揭穿世間的一切偽善,熱烈地追求真正的德行,追求從物欲之下解放出來的心靈自由。狄奧根尼確實憤世嫉俗,他曾經(jīng)提著一個燈籠在城里游走,說:“我在找一個真正老實的人。〞

隨著犬儒哲學(xué)的流行,其內(nèi)涵開始發(fā)生了微妙的變化。一位名叫德勒斯的犬儒派,某富翁送給他一筆錢,他收下了,對富翁說:“你慷慨大度地施舍給我,而我痛痛快快地取之于你,既不卑躬曲膝,也不嘮叨不滿。〞這里暗含的邏輯是,金錢本是無所謂的東西,我假設(shè)拒絕你的饋贈,倒顯得我把金錢看得太重,太當(dāng)回事了。我假設(shè)收下金錢又表示感謝,那也是把金錢看重了,當(dāng)回事了。因此,正確的做法就是,只要你肯給,我就假設(shè)無其事地收下它。早期的犬儒派是依據(jù)一種道德原那么去蔑視世俗的觀念,后期的犬儒派依然在蔑視世俗的觀念但卻失去了依據(jù)的道德原那么。這就引出了一個始料不及的后果:既然無所謂高尚,也就無所謂下賤。既然沒有什么東西是了不得的,因而也就沒有什么東西是要不得的。不難想象,基于這種無可無不可的立場,一個人可以很方便地一方面對世俗觀念做出滿不在乎的姿態(tài),另一方面又毫無顧忌地去獲取他想要獲取的任何世俗的東西。于是,對世俗的全盤否認(rèn)就變成了對世俗的照單全收,而且還往往是對世俗中最壞的局部的不知羞恥的照單全收。于是,憤世嫉俗就變成了玩世不恭。

犬儒一詞的演變證明,從憤世嫉俗到玩世不恭,其間只有一步之差。一般來說,憤世嫉俗總是理想主義的,而且是十分劇烈的理想主義。玩世不恭那么是徹底的非理想主義,徹底的無理想主義。偏偏是那些看上去最劇烈的理想主義反倒很容易轉(zhuǎn)變?yōu)閺氐椎臒o理想主義,其間原因何在?因為,許多憤世嫉俗的理想主義者在看待世界時缺少程度意識或曰分寸感,對他人缺少設(shè)身處地的同情的理解,不成認(rèn)各種價值之間的緊張與沖突,這樣,他們很容易把世界看成一片漆黑,由此便使自己陷入悲觀失望,再進而疑心和否認(rèn)美好價值的存在,最終那么是放棄理想放棄追求。早期的犬儒是堅持內(nèi)在的美德和價值,鄙視外在的世俗的功利??墒堑胶髞恚逡辉~正好變成了它的反面:只認(rèn)外在的世俗的功利,否認(rèn)內(nèi)在的德性與價值。王爾德說:“犬儒主義者對各種事物的價錢一清二楚,但是對它們的價值一無所知。〞
