TheHangingGardensTheHangingGardensweresupposedlybuiltaround600BCE,alongthebanksoftheEuphratesRiverinBabylon.Constructedinsidethepalacewalls,thegardenswerebuiltinaseriesofplatforms,orterraces,thatcreatedastructure400feetlong,400feetwide,and380feethigh!
TheHangingGardensWanderingpathsandaseriesofstepsconnectedthevariouslevels.Thegardenswereawonderlandofgreenery,floweringplants,andwaterfalls.ThatalonewouldhavegreatlyimpressedtheancientGreeks.Butalovestorywasattachedtothegardensthatmadethemevenmoreinteresting.
ItwasrumoredthatthekingKingNebuchadnezzar,orderedthegardensbuilttohonorhisqueen.TheHangingGardensThequeenwashomesickforherlandinthemountains.ThegardensweredesignedbythekingtomakehisqueenfeellovedandwelcomedinhernewlandofBabylon.NooneknowsifthelovestorybehindtheHangingGardensofBabylonistrue,orifthegardenseverreallyexisted.TheHangingGardensButitwasagreatstory,andtheGreekslovedstories,especiallystoriesaboutwarandlove.3The

TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusThetemplewasunderconstruction(again)whensomeyearslaterAlexandertheGreatvisitedthetown.Alexanderhadseenmanybeautifulbuildingsinhistravels,butthistemplewassobeautifulthatitimpressedevenAlexandertheGreat!Thetowndidnotwanttodothat,buttheydidthankAlexanderverynicely.(YouwouldtooifyouwerefacingAlexander'sarmy!)Alexanderofferedtogivethetownenoughmoneytofinishingbuildingitifthetownspeoplewouldputhisnameonit.TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusInAlexander’stime,theornatelydecoratedtemplewas425feetlong,225feetwide,and60feethigh.127columnssupportedtheroof.
Aconstantstreamofvisitorscametoseethetemple.Thetownspeoplebuiltshopsaroundthetemple.Someshopssoldlittlereplicasofthetemplefortouriststotakehome.ThecityofEphesusboomedforawhile.Butitdidnotlast.Thetemplewasdestroyed(again)around200CEbytheGoths.TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusThistime,itwasnotrebuilt.Constructioncostshadincreasedconsiderably.Therewasnotenoughmoneyinthetowntreasurytorebuildthetempletoitsformermagnificence.
Theremainingpiecesslowlysunkinthemarshyfielduntiltheruindisappearedfromsightaltogether.
TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusHundredsofyearslater,inthe1800's,theBritishMuseumsentateamtosearchforthefabledTempleofArtemis.Noonehadanyideawherethetempleusedtostand.Shortofdiggingupthewholetownandthesurroundingcountryside,thefirstteamfoundthemselvesratherstuck.
Anotherteam,sentoutafewyearslater,duguptheremainsof5temples,onebuiltontopoftheother.TheybelievedtheyhadfoundtheTempleofArtemis!
TheTempleofArtemisatEphesusToday,allthatremainsofthisincrediblestructureisasinglecolumninthemiddleofamarshyfieldthatmarksthespotwheretheTempleoncestood.5The

Today,thereisnothingleftoftheMausoleumatHalicarnassusexceptastoryaboutaqueenwholovedherhusbanddearly.6The

ThepeopleofRhodesdidsupportoneofthegenerals.ButthatgeneralwoncontrolofEgypt.AnothergeneralgainedcontrolofRhodes.Topunishthepeoplefornotsupportinghim,hesenthissontolevelRhodes.TheColossusofRhodesHelparrivedfromEgypt!ThegeneraltheyhadsupportedsenttroopsfromEgypttohelpthepeopleofRhodesdrivethesonaway.WithEgypt’shelp,thepeoplewon!Withjoy,theymelteddownthebronzearmorandwarmachineryleftbehindbytheson,andusedittobuildagiantstatueoftheirpatrongodHelios,tothankHeliosforhelpingthemsavetheircity.
TheColossusofRhodesThestatuewas110feethighandstoodona50footbase.Eachmorning,thesunglitteredoffthebronzeplatesthatcoveredthestatue.Itwasquiteasight!TheColossusofRhodesOnly56yearsafterthestatuewasbuilt,itwastoppledbyanearthquake.Manypiecesfellintotheharbor.Somepiecesremainedonland,includingthestatue’sthumb.Peopletraveledgreatdistancestoseethehugethumb.Theytriedtoputtheirarmsaroundit.Thethumbwasbiggerthantheirarmscouldstretch.
ThekingofEgyptofferedmoneytorebuildthestatue.ButthepeopleofRhodessaidno.TheybelievedtheirgodHelioswasunhappywiththestatue,andhadtosseditdowninafitofanger.Theyleftitalone.TheColossusofRhodesManyyearslater,around600CE,ArabtradersfinallyremovedtheremainsoftheColossustouseasscrapmetal.Legendsays...ittook900camelstoferrythepieceshome.
AlthoughtheColossusisnolongerinexistence,anotherfamousworkofart,inspiredbytheColossus,isstillstanding.
