Scope
ThisSpeciGcationcoversround,aluminumYladsteelcorewirewithtwodesignationsoftensilestrengths,AW2(NormalStrergth)andAW3(HighStrength).
ThevaluesstatedineitherSlunitsorinch-poundunitsaretoberegardedseparatelyasstandard.Thevaluesstatedineachsystemmaynotbeexactequivalents;therefore,eachsystemshallbeusedindependentlyoftheother.Combiningvaluesfromthetwosystemsmayresultinnon-conformancewiththestandard.

Thebasemetalshallbesteelproducedbytheopen-hearth,electric-furnace,orbasic-oxygenprocessandshallbeofsuchcompositionthatthefinishedcladwireBhaIlhavethepropertiesandcharacteristicsprescribedinthisspecification.
ThealuminumusedforcladdingshallhaveapurityandquantitySuflicienitomeetthicknessandresistancerequirementsofthisspecification(see7.1and9.1).
TensileProperties
Req“力?〃ie〃As—Thealuminum-cladsteelcorewireshallconformtothetensilerequirementsprescribedinTableIandTable2.PurchasersOfcoreintendedforuseinconductorconstructionswithannealedaluminumwires,suchasACSS/AW3,ACSS∕TW∕AW3mayrequestthestrandedsteelcorebeComPIiantonlywithultimatetensilestrengthandmaywaivecompliancewiththe1%extensiontensilerequirement.ThisuseoftheultimatetensilerequirementasanalternatetotheI%extensionrequirementshallbebyagreementbetween(hepurchaserandproducerandshallbenotedonproductcompliancedocumentation.Incomputingstressat1%extensionandultimatetensilestrength,theactualdiameterofthefinishedwireshallbeused.

WithintherangeofdiametersincludedinTable5thewireshallnotvaryfromthenominaldiameterbymorethantheamountsshowninthistabic.Incomputingpermissiblevariations,diametersshallberoundedto(henearest0.0001in.[0.003mm].
Ifaccessible,onemeasurementshallbetakenneareachendandonenearthemiddleofthecoilorreel.Inthecaseofreels,(hecenterandoneendmaynotbeaccessibleandtheprescribedmeasurementshallbetakenalongthelengthoftheaccessiblematerial.Ifanyoftheselectedcoilsorreelsfailtoconformtotherequirementsasprescribedin6.2,allcoilsorreelsshallbemeasuredinthemannerspecified.
ThicknessofAluminum
Thealuminumthicknessatanypointshallbenotlessthan10%ofthenominalwireradius.Measurementsshallbereadto(henearest0.001in.[0.03mm].Indeterminingtherequiredormeasuredthickness,fractionsof0.0005in.[0.013mm]orlessshallbedroppedandforfractionsofgreaterthan0.0005in.[0.013mm],thenextlarger0.001in.(0.003mm]shallbeused.
MeasurementsshallbemadebyusingsuitableelectricalindicatinginstrumentsoperatingOnthepermeameterprinciple,orbydirectmeasurement.Forrefereepurposes,directmeasurementshallbeusedtodeterminealuminumthicknessonspecimenstakenfromtheendsof(hecoils.
Density
Forthepurposeofcalculatingmass,crosssections,etc.,thedensityofthewireshallbetakenas0.2381lb∕in.3(6.590g∕cm3)at20℃.
Resistance
TheelectricalresistanceOfthewireshallbedeterminedbyresistancemeasurementsandmaximumallowableresistanceshallbebasedonthenominaldiameterofIhewireandtheresistivityvalueof5L0lΩ?em?l/ft[0.08480Ω?mm2∕m]at20℃.Electricalresistanceiscalculatedbythefollowingequations:

Joints
Thereshallbenojointsofanykindmadeinthefinishedwire.
JointsmaybemadeintherodsorsemifinishedwirespriortodrawingtofinalSiZeThefinishedwireatsuchjointsshallmeettherequirementsof7.1.
Weldingequipmentandprocedureshallbesuchthati(canbedemonstratedthattheultimate(ensilestrengthofafinishedwirespecimencontainingtheweldedsectionshallbenotlessthanthestressat1.0%extensionasshowninTable1andTable2.
Aweldedsection,whereverencountered,shallnotberequiredtom≥etthestressat1%extension,elongation,andtorsiontests.
Finish
Thesurfaceofthewireshallbesmoothandfreefromimperfectionsnotconsistentwithgoodcommercialpractice.
NumberOfTests
OnetestspecimenshallbetakenfromeachlotoftencoilsascladZnddrawn,beforesplittingintoindividualcoils,andtestedtodeterminecompliancewithSections5,6,7,9,and13.
TorsionTest
ThewireshallwithstandWithOUtfracturenotlessthan20twistsinalengthequivalentto100timesthenominaldiameterof【hewire.Inthistest,thespecimenshallbegrippedatilsendsinvises,oneofwhichshallbefreetomovelongitudinallyduringthetest.Asmalltensileloadofapproxi
mately15Ib[67N]shallbeappliedtothespecimenduringtesting.Thespecimenshallbetwistedbyrotatingoneofthevisesatarateofapproximately15twists/mininthesamedirectionuntilfractureoccurs.Thenumberoftwistsshallbeindicatedbyacounterorothersuitabledevice.
Specimensaftertwistingtodestructionshallnotrevealanyseams,pits,slivers,orsurfaceimperfectionsofsufficientmagnitudetoindicateinherentdefectsorimperfectionsinthewire.Examinationofthewireatthebreakshallshownoseparationofthealuminumfromthesteel.
Inspection
Unlessotherwiseagreedupon,alltestsandinspectionsshallbemadeat(heplaceofmanufacture.Themanufacturershallaffordtheinspectorrepresentingthepurchaserallreasonablefacilitiesnecessarytoensurethatthematerialisbeingfurnishedinaccordancewiththisspecification.
Rejection
Ifthewirefailsinthefirsttesttomee?anyrequirementsofthisspecification,twoadditionaltestsfortheserequirementsshallbemadeonspecimensofwirefromthesamecoilorreel.Iffailureoccursineitherofthesetests,thelotofwireshallberejected.However,thelotmayberesubmittedforinspectionbytestingeverycoil?rreelfor(herequirementwhichcausedthespecimen(ofailandsortingoutthedefectivecoilsorreels.
ProductMarking
Aweather-resistanttagshallbeattachedtotheoutsideofeachcoilorreelshowingthemanufacturer'snameortrademarkwiththeapproximatelength,netmass,andnominalsizeofwire.Eachcoilshallalsohaveataginside(hewrappingshowingthemanufacturer'sname,thesize,approximatelength,andnetmass.Ifadditionalinformationisrequiredthisshallbearrangedwiththemanufactureratthetimeofpurchase.
PackagingandShipping
Packagesizeshallbeagreeduponbythemanufacturerandthepurchaserintheplacingofindividualpurchaseorders.
Thewireshallbeprotectedagainstdamageinordinarj,handlingandshipping.
