storedby"sinks",suchastheoceans,forestsandagriculturalland,aspartof
nature'scarboncycle.
Wealsoknowthatsincetheindustrialrevolutionbegan,mankind'sactions
havecontributedsignificantlytothatgreenhouseeffect.Atmospheric
concentrationsofGHGshaverisenfromaround280ppmtwocenturiesago
toaround370ppmtoday,thankschieflytomankind'suseoffossilfuelsand,
toalesserdegree,todeforestationandotherland-usechanges.Bothsurface
temperaturesandsealevelshavebeenrisingforsometime.
Therearegoodreasonstothinktemperatureswillcontinuerising.TheIPCC
hasestimatedalikelyrangeforthatincreaseof1.4℃-5.8℃overthenext
century,althoughthelowerendofthatrangeismorelikely.Sincewhat
mattersisnotjusttheabsolutetemperaturelevelbuttherateofchangeaswell,
itmakessensetotrytoslowdowntheincrease.

WhetherCLTshouldbeconsideredanapproachoramethodologyisamore
