Between1815and1860,largenumbersofpeoplecamefromnorthernEurope.
ThelargestgroupswereIrishandGermans.SomeAsians,mostlyChinese,
alsocameduringthistime.
MostIrishimmigrantslandedinNorthernportcitiessuchasBoston,New
York,andPhiladelphia.Theydidnothaveenoughmoneytobuyfarms.Most
settledinthepoorestareasofthesecities.Irishpeoplegottheworstjobsand
lowestpay.
Thegoldrushof1849broughtmanyChinesetoCalifornia.In1850alone,
25000youngChinesearrivedinCalifornia.TheChineseworkedinthegold
mines.Theyhelpedbuildthefirstrailroadtocrossthenation,whichwas
finishedin1869.
Thesecondgreatwaveofimmigrantscamemostlyfromeasternandsouthern
Europebetween1890and1910.GiantfactoriesandbusinessesintheUnited
Statesneededmoreandmoreworkers.After1900,asmanyas15000people
