WhenIaskedhowoldtheywerehetoldmethattheyrangedinagefromthree

tofiveyears!

Thepressuretomakeordinarychildrenexceptionalhasbecomealmostan

offeringlessonsineverythingfrombeginningreadingtotakingcollege

entranceexams.Otherparentsurgetheirchildrentostartdatingatanearly

agesothattheywillhavegoodinterpersonalskillsandabetterchancetowin

themosteligiblemates.

Clearly,thereisnothingwrongwithwantingchildrentodotheirbest.Itisnot

Thegoldrushof1849broughtmanyChinesetoCalifornia.In1850alone,
