preventedfromworkingtheirclaims;somelocalitiesevenpassedregulations
forbiddingthemtoownclaims.TheChinesethereforestartedtoseekout
otherwaysofearningaliving.Someofthembegantodothelaundryforthe
whiteminers;otherssetupsmallrestaurants.(Therewerealmostnowomen
inCaliforniainthosedays,andtheChinesefilledarealneedbydoingthis

Intheearly1860'smanymoreChinesearrivedinCalifornia.Thistimethe

shavedheads;inthestrange,non-Westernclothestheywore;intheirspeech
(fewhadlearnedEnglishsincetheyplannedtogobacktoChina);andintheir
religion.Theywerecontemptuouslycalled"heathenChinese"becausethere
weremanysacredimagesintheirhousesofworship.
Whentimeswerehard,theywereblamedforworkingforlowerwagesand
takingjobsawayfromwhitemen,whowereinmanyeasesrecentimmigrants
themselves.Anti-Chineseriotsbrokeoutinseveralcities,culminatingin
arsonandbloodshed.Chinesewerebarredfromusingthecourtsandalsofrom
becomingAmericancitizens.Californiansbegantodemandthatnomore
Chinesebepermittedtoentertheirstate.Finally,in1882,theypersuaded
