butasiwaspreparingmyremarks,somethingintervenedyesterday.andsoiwanttojustdevoteafewwordsaboutyesterdaystragedyinkansas.thismorningourprayersarewiththepeopleofoverlandpark.andwerestilllearningthedetails,butthismuchweknow.agunmanopenedfireattwojewishfacilities--acommunitycenterandaretirementhome.innocentpeoplewerekilled.theirfamiliesweredevastated.andthisviolencehasstrucktheheartofthejewishcommunityinkansascity.

twoofthevictims--agrandfatherandhisteenage[grand]son--attendedtheunitedmethodistchurchoftheresurrection,whichisledbyourfriendreverendadamhamilton.someofyoumayknowthatduringmyinauguration,reverendhamiltondeliveredthesermonattheprayerserviceatthenationalcathedral.andiwasgratefulforhispresenceandhiswords.hejoinedusatourbreakfastlastyear.andattheeasterserviceforpalmsundaylastnight,hehadtobreakthisterriblenewstohiscongregation.

thatthisoccurrednow--asjewswerepreparingtocelebratepassover,aschristianswereobservingpalmsunday--makesthistragedyallthemorepainful.andtoday,aspassoverbegins,wereseeinganumberofsynagoguesandjewishcommunitycenterstakeaddedsecurityprecautions.nobodyshouldhavetoworryabouttheirsecuritywhengatheringwiththeirfellowbelievers.nooneshouldeverhavetofearfortheirsafetywhentheygotopray.

andasagovernment,weregoingtoprovidewhateverassistanceisneededtosupporttheinvestigation.asamericans,wenotonlyneedtoopenourheartstothefamiliesofthevictims,wevegottostandunitedagainstthiskindofterribleviolence,whichhasnoplaceinoursociety.andwehavetokeepcomingtogetheracrossfaithstocombattheignoranceandintolerance,includinganti-semitismthatcanleadtohatredandtoviolence,becausewereallchildrenofgod.wereallmadeinhisimage,allworthyofhisloveanddignity.andweseewhathappensaroundtheworldwhenthiskindofreligious-basedortingedviolencecanrearitsuglyhead.itsgotnoplaceinoursociety.

sothiseasterweek,ofcoursewerecognizethattheresalotofpainandalotofsinandalotoftragedyinthisworld,butwerealsooverwhelmedbythegraceofanawesomegod.wereremindedhowhelovesus,sodeeply,thathegavehisonlybegottensonsothatwemightlivethroughhim.andintheseholydays,werecallallthatjesusenduredforus--thescornofthecrowdsandthepainofthecrucifixion,inourchristianreligioustraditionwecelebratethegloryoftheresurrection--allsothatwemightbeforgivenofoursinsandgrantedeverlastinglife.

andmorethan2,000yearslater,itinspiresusstill.wearedrawntohistimelessteachings,challengedtobeworthyofhissacrifice,toemulateasbestwecanhiseternalexampletoloveoneanotherjustashelovesus.andofcourse,werealwaysremindedeachandeverydaythatwefallshortofthatexample.andnoneofusarefreefromsin,butwelooktohislifeandstrive,knowingthat“ifweloveoneanother,godlivesinus,andhisloveisperfectedinus.”

illtellyou,ifeltthisspiritwhenihadthegreathonorofmeetinghisholiness,popefrancis,recently.ithinkitsfairtosaythatthoseofusofthechristianfaith,regardlessofourdenomination,havebeentouchedandmovedbypopefrancis.now,someofitishiswords--hismessageofjusticeandinclusion,especiallyforthepoorandtheoutcast.heimploresustoseetheinherentdignityineachhumanbeing.butitsalsohisdeeds,simpleyetprofound--huggingthehomelessman,andwashingthefeetofsomebodywhonormallyordinaryfolkswouldjustpassbyonthestreet.heremindsusthatallofus,nomatterwhatourstation,haveanobligationtoliverighteously,andthatweallhaveanobligationtolivehumbly.becausethats,infact,theexamplethatweprofesstofollow.

soihadawonderfulconversationwithpopefrancis,mostlyabouttheimperativesofaddressingpovertyandinequality.andiinvitedhimtocometotheunitedstates,andisincerelyhopehewill.whenweexchangedgiftshegavemeacopyofhisinspiringwritings,“thejoyofthegospel.”andthereisapassagethatspeakstoustoday:“christsresurrection,”hewrites,“isnotaneventofthepast;itcontainsavitalpowerwhichhaspermeatedthisworld.”andheadds,“jesusdidnotriseinvain.mayweneverremainonthesidelinesofthismarchoflivinghope!”

sothismorning,mymainmessageisjusttosaythankyoutoallofyou,becauseyoudontremainonthesidelines.iwanttothankyouforyourministries,foryourgoodworks,forthemarchingyoudoforjusticeanddignityandinclusion,fortheministriesthatallofyouattendtoandhavehelpedorganizethroughoutyourcommunitieseachandeverydaytofeedthehungryandhousethehomelessandeducatechildrenwhosodesperatelyneedaneducation.youhavemadeadifferenceinsomanydifferentways,notonlyhereintheunitedstatesbutoverseasaswell.andthatincludesacauseclosetomyheart,mybrotherskeeper,aninitiativethatwerecentlylaunchedtomakesurethatmoreboysandyoungmenofcolorcanovercometheoddsandachievetheirdreams.

andwerejoinedbyseveralfaithleaderswhoaredoingoutstandingworkinthisareamentoringandhelpingyoungmenintoughneighborhoods.werealsojoinedbysomeoftheseyoungmenwhoareworkinghardandtryingtobegoodstudentsandgoodsonsandgoodcitizens.andiwanttosaytoeachofthoseyoungmenhere,wereproudofyou,andweexpectalotofyou.andweregoingtomakesurethatwerethereforyousothatyoutheninturnwillbethereforthenextgenerationofyoungmen.
