HeisoneofthebusiestcivilrightslawyersinChicago,andheworkshardtokeepjusticeinourcity.
Forthepastyear,mydadhasbeengettingreadyforabigcase.
Haveyoueverworkedonanythingforanentireyear?
I'mathirdgraderatWestoverElementarySchool.MynameisKatieandI'monlyeight,butI'vebeenworkingonsomethingtoo.
It'scalledobservation.It'sfunbecause—letmetellyou—I'veseensomestrangethings.
LikethetimeDavid,aboyinmyclass,couldn't
resistsqueezingthepuddingcupfromhislunchbox.

AndthetimemyLittlesisterinsistedthatourfamilychangehernametoEduardoaftershefinished
watchingtheCookingwithEduardoshowwithGrandma.
JustlastweekIsawMrs.Higginsdrivingthroughtown
withfourteenChihuahuasinhercar—andthosewerejusttheChihuahuasthatIcouldcountasshewaspassingus.
Asyoucansee,observationisaworthwhilepastime.
ButthestrangestthingthatIhaveeverobservedhappenedtonight,whileIwaspracticingformyspellingtest.
Iaskedmydadifhecouldhelpmewiththetoughestwordonmyspellinglist:Mississippi.Usuallymydadlovestohelpme,butthistimehesaid,“I'mnotsure.Goaskyourmom.”
“Howcanyou,Dad,oneofthesmartestpeopleIknow,notknowhowtospellMississippi?”Iaskedinastonishment.
“Well,Katie,Ineverhavebeenaverygoodspeller.Infact,Idon'tbelievethatIhaveeverspelledMississippicorrectly.
ActuallytherearealotofwordsI'veneverspelledcorrectly,"heanswered.
“ThatisthestrangestthingthatIhaveheard,Dad,evenstrangerthanEduardo!”Ireplied.“Howdidyoumakeitthroughthethirdgradeifyoucouldn'tspellMississippi?”
“Well,itwasn'teasy.Iwasoftenashamedofnotbeingabletospellthewordsonmyspellingtests.
Infact,someofmyclassmatesevenmadefunofme,"hesaid
withaserioussmile.
“Dad,doyoumeanthatyouwerekindofLikeMarkTwingle?Hesitsinfrontofmeandhecan'tspellanything!”
