longerlifeintheworms,beforetheycanbeusedtoaidthedevelopmentoftreatmentsto

[J]TheMacModelresearchershavealsoproducedahigh-qualityannotatedgenomesequencefor

M.lignano,alongwithothergeneticmodificationtoolsthatProf.Berezikovbelieveshave

createdapowerfulmodelforfurtherstudiesintostemcellsandageing.Hewarned,however,

thatitcouldtakeadecadebeforethesecanbeusedfbrapplicationsinhumans.First,theteam

hopestotestthegenestheyidentifiedinM.lignanoinmodelspeciesmorerelevantto

humans,suchastheshort-livedfishNothobranchiusfurzeri(killifish)andmice.

[K]Butwormsdonotjusthavethepowertopotentiallyextendhumanlife,theymayalsohold

lessonsabouthowtoimproveitsquality.AresearchprojectcalledREPROWORMisusing

wormstolookatreprogrammingcellstoregeneratebrainandnervetissuesinanattemptto

treatconditionslikeAlzheimer'sdiseaseandmusculardystrophy.Theresearchersbehindthe

projectareusingtheroundworm,C.elegansspecies,whichhasasimilarnumberofgenesto

humans-about20,000—morethanhalfofwhichhavehumanequivalents.

[L]Dr.BarisTursun,principalinvestigatorforREPROWORMandaresearcherattheMax

DelbriickCenterinBerlin,Germany,andhisteam,checkedall20,000oftheworm'sgenes.

Theiraimwastoidentifyspecificgenesthatmayhavearoleinblockingcellsfrombeing

reprogrammed.Theyhopedthatturningoffthesegenescouldthenallowcellstobe

convertedintoothercelltypesneededtorepairdamagedtissues,suchasstemcells.

[MJTheanalysisidentifiedabout160genesthatseemtoplayaroleinblockingcellfate

reprogramming.Subsequenttestsofanumberoftheseinatypeofhumancellknownas

fibroblastsshowedthatsomeofthesegeneshavearoleasabarrierforreprogrammingcells

inbothpeopleandC.elegans.Theresearchersarenowplanningtotestmoreoftheblocking

genestheyidentifiedinC.eleganstoseeiftheytoocouldbeappliedtohumancells.As

thingsstandnow,there'salongwaytogofortherelatedscientists.

howwellcellsthalhavebeenreprograrniiiedinthiswaywillbehaveuncetheyare
