thatitcouldtakeadecadebeforethesecanbeusedfbrapplicationsinhumans.First,theteam
hopestotestthegenestheyidentifiedinM.lignanoinmodelspeciesmorerelevantto
humans,suchastheshort-livedfishNothobranchiusfurzeri(killifish)andmice.

projectareusingtheroundworm,C.elegansspecies,whichhasasimilarnumberofgenesto
humans-about20,000—morethanhalfofwhichhavehumanequivalents.

DelbriickCenterinBerlin,Germany,andhisteam,checkedall20,000oftheworm'sgenes.
Theiraimwastoidentifyspecificgenesthatmayhavearoleinblockingcellsfrombeing
reprogrammed.Theyhopedthatturningoffthesegenescouldthenallowcellstobe
convertedintoothercelltypesneededtorepairdamagedtissues,suchasstemcells.
[MJTheanalysisidentifiedabout160genesthatseemtoplayaroleinblockingcellfate
reprogramming.Subsequenttestsofanumberoftheseinatypeofhumancellknownas
fibroblastsshowedthatsomeofthesegeneshavearoleasabarrierforreprogrammingcells
inbothpeopleandC.elegans.Theresearchersarenowplanningtotestmoreoftheblocking
genestheyidentifiedinC.eleganstoseeiftheytoocouldbeappliedtohumancells.As
