Thestudy,calledMidlifeintheUnitedStates,assessed3,343menandwomenbetween

theagesof32and84withameanageof56years.Almost40percentoftheparticipantshad

atleasta4-yearcollegedegree.Theresearchersevaluatedhowtheparticipantsperformedin

twocognitiveareas,verbalmemoryandexecutivefunction—brainprocessesinvolvedin

planning,abstractthinkingandcognitiveflexibility.Participantsweregivenabatteryoftests,

includingtestsofverbalfluency,wordrecall,andbackwardcounting.

Asexpected,thosewithhighereducationsaidtheyengagedincognitiveactivities

moreoftenandalsodidbetteronthememorytests,butsomewithlowereducationalsodid

well,explainedLachman.

“Thefindingsarcpromisingbecausetheysuggesttheremaybewaystolevelthe

playingfieldforthosewithlowereducationalachievement,andprotectthoseatgreatestrisk

fbrmemorydeclines,saidLachman."Althoughwecannotruleoutthepossibilitythatthose

whohavebettermemoriesaretheoneswhotakeonmoreactivities,theevidenceisconsistent

withcognitiveplasticity(可塑'性),andsuggestssomedegreeofpersonalcontrolover
