The hospital wanted payment for surgery totaling $41,188. Ryan had never set foot in that hospital. Obviously there was some mistake. I thought it was a joke, says Ryan. But when he called the billing agency, nobody laughed. Someone named Joe Ryan, using Ryans Social Security number, had indeed been admitted for surgery. He figured clearing this up would take just a few phone calls. Two years later, Ryan continues to suffer from the damage to his credit rating and still doesnt know if his medical record has been cleared of wrong information. Joe Ryan was the victim of a little-known but frightening type of consumer fraud that is on the rise: medical identity theft, which involves using your name to get drugs, expensive medical treatment and even cheating insurance payments. As Ryan discovered, money isnt the half of it. When someone steals your name to receive health care, his medical history becomes part of your record and setting the record straight can be extremely difficult. Thats because, in part, the information is distributed among dozens of caregivers, from doctors to medicine stores to insurance companies and labs.I wanted to help straighten this out, says Ryan, so I went to the hospital, and they had a three-inch-thick record for me, but they wouldnt let me see it. I showed them my ID, and they said thats not Joe Ryans signature. Well, of course not! They had this other guys signature. Ryan had fallen into a victims Catch-22: If your record doesnt appear to be yours, you may not have the right to see it, much less change it.Ryans next step was a visit to the Police Department. But the cops concluded there was not much they could do; local law enforcement has little experience with medical ID theft, and cases can end up being considered a civil matter. 36. The billing agency sent Joe Ryan a notice to _. A. playing a joke on him for medical treatment B. inform him of the payment for his surgery C. clear up the wrong information in his medical record D. correct the mistakes about payment for his surgery37. Joe Ryan initially thought his problem was _. A. easy to settle B. difficult to settleC. impossible to solve D. unnecessary to solve38. Which of the following is the best title of this passage? A. A mistake Made by Littleton Adventist Hospital B. Expensive Medical Treatment C. Your Medical Records, Stolen! D. Joe Ryan, Wanted by the PoliceBKung Fu Hustle Creates the Top-grossingIts no surprise why Kung Fu Hustle is the top-grossing homegrown movie in Hong Kong. Hustles approach to a simple good-against-evil plot is extremely cheerful.Humor bordering on slapstick combined with exciting choreography by Yuen Wo Ping, who masterminded(策劃)the fight scenes in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Matrix, make Kung Fu Hustle a lively, visual treat. There is plenty of violence, but its largely cartoonish. Stephen Chow wrote, directed, produced and stars in this non-stop action movie, which is in Cantonese with English subtitles.Chow plays Sing, an eager young man who longs to be a member of the powerful and cruel Axe Gang. When gang members appear on the scene, sometimes dancing with their frightening axes in hand, the sky breaks out with fireworks. The sets are shocking, with classic cars lining the neon-lighted streets and gambling casinos(賭博場)serving as the backdrop to the underworld activities. All these give off the sensation of Old West shootouts. One neighborhood is blessedly away from the disorder. Pig Sty Alley is so poverty-stricken it holds no interest for the Axe Gang. Then in wanders the unlucky Sing, who attempts to get money there. But folks are not what they seem: The town is full of kung fu masters.Sing tries to single out someone he can fight, but it seems as if everyone, elderly and very young alike, has a body like Charles Atlas. During the time, Sing calls upon the Axe Gang, which faces off against the people of Pig Sty Alley, led by the town s landlords, the powerful lady in curlers and her husband. Fans of kung fu movies will have a rip-roaring time, but even moviegoers are sure to enjoy spirited action of Kung Fu Hustle.36. Which of the following characters does the passage mainly describe?A. Stephen Chow B. Yuen Wo Ping C. Sing D. Charles Atlas37. Kung Fu Hustle becomes the top-grossing homegrown movie in Hong Kong because _. A. it is full of humor and exciting action B. it is full of cartoonish characters B. it is mainly made up of dance D. it is a non-stop action movie38. Which of the following about the Axe Gang is TRUE? A. The Axe Gang is popular with fans of kung fu movies. B. The Axe Gang is always easy do good things. C. The Axe Gang doesnt know how to use guns. D. The Axe Gang often fights against its enemy using the axes.39. In which part are you likely to find it if the passage appears in the web site? A. Entertainment. B. Travel. C. News. D. Books.CHave you ever noticed the color of the water in a river or stream after a heavy rainfall? What do you think caused this change in color? It is soil that has been washed into the river from the riverbank or from tle nearby fieldsComponents of SoftSoil is made up of a number of layers(層),each having its own distinctive color and textureThe upper layer is known as the litterIt acts like a blanketlimiting temperature changes and reducing water lossThe topsoil layer is made up of small particles of rock mixed with rotten plant and animal matter called humus(腐殖質(zhì)),which is black and gives the topsoil its dark colorThis layer is usually rich in nutrients, oxygen, and waterBelow the topsoil is the subsoil,a layer that contains more stones mixed with only small amounts of organic matterThis layer is lighter in color because of the lack of humusBeneath the soil lies a layer of bedrockSoil forms from the bottom upOver time bedrock is attacked by rain, wind, frost, and snowIt is gradually broken down into smaller particles in a process called weatheringPlants begin to grow, and rotten materials enrich the topsoilMost of the soil in Eastern Canadafor exampleWas formed from weathered rock that was exposed when the ice disappeared l2000 years ag0Water Beneath the SoilSurface water collects and flows above the ground in lakespondsand riversOnce in the soil or rock,it is called groundwaterGravity pulls groundwater through the soil in a process called percolation(滲透)Eventually the water reaches a layer called the water tableUnder this is bedrock through which water cannot percolateAs water percolates downward,it dissolves organic matter and minerals from the soil and carries them to deeper layersThis causes a serious problem because plants require these nutrients for growth.Soil pHSoil can be acidicneutralor basicThe pH of the soil is determined by the nature of the rockfrom which it was formedand by the nature of the plants that grow and rot in itThe acidity of rain and snow can lower the pH of the groundwater that enters the soilBy burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gasoline, humans have been contributing to higher levels of acidity in many soilsWhen fossil fuels are burnedgases are released into the air and then fall back to earth as acid rainAcid soil increases the problem of carrying nutrients to lower soil levelsAs nutrients are removed, soil is less fertilePlants grow more slowly in acidic soil, and also become easily attacked by diseases36The layer of soil that provides necessary nutrients for plant growth is calledA1itter Btopsoil Chumus Dsubsoil37According to the textwhich of the following is NOT true?ASoil forms from weathered rock on the earth surfaceBThe deeper layer of soil is darker in color than the surface soilCAir pollution is partially responsible for acid soilDGroundwater tends to carry away nutrients for plant growth38We can infer from the passage that the water table lies Abetween the topsoil layer and the subsoil layer Bin the subsoil layer above bedrockCbetween the subsoil layer and bedrock Din the bedrock layer beneath the subsoil39The underlined word “dissolve” is used to express the idea that organic matter and minerals from soil are Arushed away into the river Bcleaned and purified by waterCdestroyed and carried away by water Dmixed with water and become part of itDWe sometimes think global warming or climate change is a problem very far away from our lives, and that only the government needs to worry about it. But its hardly possible to completely stay out of it scientists are now 95 percent sure that humans have been the “dominant cause” of global warming trends since the 1950s. One of the conclusions of a report released on Sept 27 by the United Nations says that human activities have caused global temperatures to rise by 0.89 0C between 1901 and 2012. That might not seem like a lot, but the truth is that a major part of that heat has been absorbed into the oceans, which is not surprising given that they cover two thirds of Earths surface. Also, water has a much greater capacity (容量) to absorb heat than the air does, according to The Economist. While many greenhouse gases occur naturally and are needed to keep the Earth warm enough to support life, humans use of fossil fuels is the main source of excess (多余的) greenhouse gases. According to CNN, by driving cars, using electricity produced by burning coal and oil or heating our homes with coal or natural gas, we release a large amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Your body can barely feel a difference of 0.89 0C, but the Earths ecosystems are so sensitive that even small changes can disturb them. It often starts with the smallest creatures at the bottom of the food chain, eventually affecting bigger animals, many of which could end up becoming extinct. Global warming is also linked to an increase in extreme weather. A larger amount of carbon dioxide traps more energy inside the atmosphere. This changes the patterns of storms and rainfall in many regions and can lead to droughts and floods. Worse still, melting sea ice in warmer oceans is causing sea levels to rise at a speed of more than three millimeters per year, according to The Guardian, which also increases the risk of flooding. “The report should serve as another wake-up call that our activities today have a profound impact on society, not only for us, but for many generations to come,” French Michel Jarraud, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization, said at a news conference.68.Theunderlinedword“dominant”inthefirstparagraphmeans “_”.A. common B.indirect C.secondary D. leading69.WhichofthefollowingstatementsisTRUEaccordingtothepassage? _A.Greenhousegaseshavebeenproventoharmmerely theEarth .B.Thereislittlewecandotopreventglobalwarming.C.Globalwarmingcanincreasethechancesofdroughtsandfloods.D.Thehugenessofoceansmakesthembetter absorbersofheatthantheair.70.Theriseinglobaltemperaturesbetween1901and2012_.A.ismoreharmfultosmallercreaturesthanbiggeronesB.isnotseriousbecausemostoftheextraheathasbeenabsorbedbytheoceansC.hasmadetheEarthsecosystemsmoresensitivetochangesD. islikelytocausemanyspeciestobecomeextinct71.WhatisMichelJarraudsattitudetowardthereportreleasedbytheUN? _A.Negative. It makes us wonder if scientists can send a man to the moon, why cant they find a cure for the common cold? The answer is easy. There are actually hundreds of kinds of cold viruses out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isnt a cure for each one. When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard t
