12、: the moonstone is an elaborate act of historical detection and reconstruction. by way of an intricate collective narrative performed by a series of individuals who explicitly present their case like witnesses in a trial, this novel dramatizes a sustained effort to recover a lost incident, connectin
13、g contemporary circumstances with historical origins, and assembling a chain of evidence that will link the present to the past by explaining the truth about a mysterious sequence of events (admuff 1998). in its complex narrative and in the unfolding of its even more complicated plot, the moonstone
14、did in fact become the prototypical english detective novel. ii. literary backgroundin 1842 the american writer edgar allan poe published the people street homicide; this novel is full of suspense. finally the animal murderer actually, it seems to cheat, but also demonstrating the artistic style of

28、mes the mystery. till the end the readers have to read through, in order to understand the whole truth.2. plot summary the moonstone is a magnificent yellow diamond “l(fā)arge as a plovers egg”. colonel john herncastle, who seized it from the forehead of a hindu god, looted it at the siege of seringapat
29、am in southern india in 1799. on his return to england he was ostracised by his family and society, and in revenge for a slight he leaves the diamond, said to carry a curse, to his niece rachel verinder. rachels cousin, franklin blake, is to deliver the diamond to the verinder house near frizinghall
30、 on the yorkshire coast. the moonstone is presented to rachel at a dinner party for her eighteenth birthday. the guests include godfrey ablewhite, another cousin; mr candy, the family doctor; mr murthwaite, a celebrated traveller in india; and drusilla clack, an interfering evangelist. the party goe
31、s badly. rachel and franklin blake have become fond of each other while decorating her sitting room door and rachel had earlier refused a marriage proposal from ablewhite. in addition, blake quarrels with mr candy about the competence of doctors. blake had been followed in london and murthwaite iden
32、tifies three indians seen near the house as high caste brahmins. rachel places the diamond in her bedroom cabinet but the next morning it is missing. the local police superintendent, seegrave, is a bungling incompetent so blake calls in the celebrated sergeant cuff of the detective police. he rules
33、out the suspicious indians but realises the importance of smeared paint on rachels sitting room door. the smear has been made by an article of dress, whose owner is almost certainly the thief. rachel behaves inexplicably, obstructing the investigation and refusing to have anything more to do with fr
34、anklin blake. cuff concludes that she has stolen her own diamond assisted by rosanna spearman, a deformed housemaid fascinated by the local quicksand. rosanna is a reformed thief who is acquainted with a dubious london moneylender, septimus luker. she is also in love with franklin blake and after ac
35、ting strangely drowns herself in the shivering sand. cuff is dismissed from the case by lady verinder but correctly predicts future developments. in london, both ablewhite and luker are attacked and searched, luker losing a receipt for a great valuable. lady verinder dies of a heart condition and ra
36、chel reluctantly agrees to marry ablewhite whose father has become her guardian. they move to brighton where they are visited by mr bruff, the family solicitor. the engagement is broken off when he reveals that ablewhite is in debt and is marrying rachel for her money. blake returns from travels abr
37、oad but rachel refuses to see him. determined to restore her good opinion, he revisits yorkshire where rosanna spearmans only friend, limping lucy, gives him a letter from the dead housemaid. this leads him to the shivering sand where rosanna has hidden his nightgown, smeared with paint, with a conf
38、ession that she concealed the nightgown and killed herself out of love. the confused blake returns to london and contrives a meeting with rachel at mr bruffs house in hampstead. there she tells him that she knows he had financial problems and with her own eyes saw him take the diamond. her actions h
39、ave been to protect his reputation. blake meets mr candys assistant, ezra jennings, who saved candys life from a fever caught after the birthday dinner. jennings had recorded candys delirium, which revealed that candy had secretly given blake opium to prove his point in their argument. blake therefo
40、re unknowingly stole the diamond under the influence of the drug, in order to keep it safe. jennings explains to blake that if he takes opium again under similar conditions he may repeat his actions of the previous year and reveal where he placed the diamond. blake agrees and the experiment is condu
41、cted with mr bruff as an observer. blake takes a substitute gem but fails to reveal the moonstones hiding place. rachel, really in love with him, is also present and has already forgiven him. bruff in the meantime has lukers bank watched. the moneylender is observed passing the diamond to a sailor w
42、ho is followed to a dockside inn. later the same night he is murdered. cuff, brought out of retirement by blake, discovers that the sailor is godfrey ablewhite in disguise. he was the real thief and stole the gem to save himself from financial ruin. he has been killed by the indians who have now rec
43、overed the diamond. in a religious ceremony witnessed in india by murthwaite, the brahmins return the diamond to the god of the moon. (wickie.collins 1995:374)3. main charactersthe author uses detector cuffs hands to reveal the mystery and so mysterious and unpredictable is the case of gradual revel
44、ation of the truth. not only shall ups and downs, but also a large number of life-size figures in typical shape.franklin blake, cousin to rachel verinder and the person she is suspected to have fallen in love with. he is intelligent, having been educated abroad, and is described by other characters
45、in the book as having different personalities depending on whether his french, german, english or italian sides were uppermost.rachel verinder, she is a well-educated, well brought up young woman preparing herself for marriage. all the more reason, then, that her sudden personality changes once the
46、diamond has been stolen are out of character. she has violent mood swings and changes from a likeable, easy-going young woman to a selfish annoying brat. godfrey ablewhite, also cousin to rachel verinder and seemingly in love with her. he is known as a good sort, spending a lot of his time doing goo
47、d deeds and charitable work. he comes from a good home; although his mother, lady verinders sister, married below herself. godfrey is considered to be a nice young man, but there is something slightly creepy about him.sergeant cuff, the famous detective brought in to solve the crime. lean and ugly,
48、he scares a number of people in the household with his tough questions. he has a touch of the sherlock holmes about him - he sneaks around and acts oddly - all for very good reasons that are totally unclear to everyone else. however, despite his suspicions, he struggles to prove who the thief is.ros
49、anna spearman was rescued by lady verinder from a reformatory and is ostracized by the other servants. she does well in the house; until franklin blake first returns from abroad and she falls deeply in love with him. her behavior becomes erratic, particularly after the disappearance of the diamond,
50、and she becomes the chief suspect in the case. her story is the most touching of all; she is a plain girl with a disabled shoulder who has suffered greatly and unfortunately looks to continue to suffer greatly.all of the characters were very easy to visualize and easy to either like or dislike accor
51、ding to the way they were portrayed. there is no way, however, to guess who was responsible for the theft of the diamond from the characters - that is something you will just have to wait for. what was most interesting is the way that the story is told over the course of the book by a number of diff
