He who has a purpose is always concentrating his forces.By the will, the hope and the plan are prevented from evaporating into drea
、ms.Enthusiasm keeps the interest up, and makes the obstacles seem small.Life is in a sense a battle. The man who thinks to get on by mere smartness and by idling meets failure at last.Perseverance is the master impulse of the firmest souls, and holds the key to those treasure-houses of knowledge fro
、m which the world has drawn its wealth both of wisdom and of moral worth.Great men never wait for opportunities; they make them. They seize upon whatever is at hand, work out their problem, and master the situation. The greatest thing a man can do in this world is to make the most possible out of th
、e stuff that has been given to him. This is success and there is no other. One of the important lessons of life is to learn how to get victory out of defeat. It takes courage and stamina, when mortified by humiliating disaster, to seek in the ruins the elements of future conquest. Yet this measures t
、he difference between those who succeed and those who fail. We cannot measure a man by his failures. We must know what use he makes of them. The man who has not fought his way upward and does not bear the scar of desperate conflict does not know the highest meaning of success.Passage 6Two roads dive
、rged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that the passi

、verged in a wood, and II took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.Passage 7If you change your mind - from pessimism to optimism - you can change your life. Do you see the glass as half-full rather than half empty? Do you keep your eye upon the doughnut, or upon the hole? Su
、ddenly these cliches are scientific questions, as researchers scrutinize the power of positive thinking. Research is proving that optimism can help you to be happier, healthier and more successful. Pessimism leads, by contrast, to hopelessness, sickness and failure, and is linked to depression, lone
、liness and painful shyness. If we could teach people to think more positively, it would be like inoculating them against these mental ills.Your habits count but the belief that you can succeed affects whether or not you will. In part, thats because optimists and pessimists deal with the same challen
、ges and disappointments in very different ways. When things go wrong the pessimist tends to blame himself. “Im not good at this.” “I always fail.” He would say. But the optimist looks for loopholes. Negative or positive, it was a self-fulfilling prophecy. If people feel hopeless they dont bother to
、acquire the skills they need to succeed.A sense of control is the litmus test for success. The optimist feels in control of his own life. If things are going badly, he acts quickly, looking for solutions, forming a new plan of action, and reaching out for advice. The pessimist feels like fates playt
、hing and moves slowly. He doesnt seek advice, since he assumes nothing can be done. Many studies suggest that the pessimists feeling of helplessness undermines the bodys natural defenses, the immune system. Research has found that the pessimist doesnt take good care of himself. Feeling passive and un
、able to dodge lifes blows, he expects ill health and other misfortunes,no matter what he does. He munches on junk food, avoids exercise, ignores the doctor, has another drink. Most people are a mix of optimism and pessimism, but are inclined in one direction or the other. It is a pattern of thinking learned at our mothers knees. It grows out of thousands
