9、sasters occur frequently), have suffered from the "three evils": sand storm, soil salification and floods (/water-logging) for many generations. The year 1962 witnesses another famine. Folks there have to leave their homes in order to beg a living (/go begging) from door to door elsewhere.

10、 It is at this time that Jiao is sent to the county (/sent to work there; transferred to work there). Led by Jiao Yulu, the Laokao people begin to struggle with (cope with) the "three evils". One of the effective measures they take is to plant Paotong trees which grow easily in sandy soil.

11、 The film features many moving scenes in which Jiao helps the local peasants, especially those who are in an extremely difficult situation. Overworked, Jiao Yulu is finally striken down by an incurable (/fatal) diesase. He died at a hospital in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, on May 14, 1965.
