15、 the prestige of a journal. Subject field, quality, and reputation of the journal have a direct effect on the value of a citation. SJR also normalizes for differences in citation behavior between subject fields. Four years of data are needed to calculate a SJR. Scopus has complete citation data from
16、 1996, so the first SJR value available is for 1999.oSJR assigns relative scores to all of the sources in a citation network. Its methodology is inspired by the Google PageRank algorithm, in that not all citations are equal. A source transfers its own prestige, or status, to another source through t
17、he act of citing it. A citation from a source with a relatively high SJR is worth more than a citation from a source with a lower SJR.oA sources prestige for a particular year is shared equally over all the citations it makes in that year; this is important because it corrects for the fact that typi
18、cal citation counts vary widely between subject fields. oThe SJR of a source in a field with a high likelihood of citing is shared over a lot of citations, so each citation is worth relatively little. oThe SJR of a source in a field with a low likelihood of citing is shared over few citations, so ea

For example, they tend to be higher in life sciences th

28、incorporation of the quality of citations in the evaluation of scientific journals. We sought to compare the newly introduced SCImago journal rank (SJR) indicator with the journal impact factor (IF). We retrieved relevant information from the official Web sites hosting the above indices and their so
29、urce databases. The SJR indicator is an open-access resource, while the journal IF requires paid subscription. The SJR indicator (based on Scopus data) lists considerably more journal titles published in a wider variety of countries and languages, than the journal IF (based on Web of Science data).
30、Both indices divide citations to a journal by articles of the journal, during a specific time period. However, contrary to the journal IF, the SJR indicator attributes different weight to citations depending on the prestige of the citing journal without the influence of journal self-citations; prest
31、ige is estimated with the application of the PageRank algorithm in the network of journals. In addition, the SJR indicator includes the total number of documents of a journal in the denominator of the relevant calculation, whereas the journal IF includes only citable articles (mainly original articl
32、es and reviews). A 3-yr period is analyzed in both indices but with the use of different approaches. Regarding the top 100 journals in the 2006 journal IF ranking order, the median absolute change in their ranking position with the use of the SJR indicator is 32 (1st quartile: 12; 3rd quartile: 75).

The present study re-evaluated the influence of self-citation on the 2007 IF for 18 major orthopaedic journals and investigated the difference in ranking between IF and SJR.oMETHODS: The journals were analysed for self-citati
39、on both overall and divided into a general group (n = 8) and a specialized group (n = 10). Self-cited and self-citing rates, as well as citation densities and IFs corrected for self-citation (cIF), were calculated. The rankings of the 18 journals by IF and by SJR were compared and the absolute diffe
40、rence between these rankings (DeltaR) was determined.oRESULTS: Specialized journals had higher self-citing rates (p = 0.01, Deltamedian = 9.50, 95%CI -19.42 to 0.42), higher self-cited rates (p = 0.0004, Deltamedian =-10.50, 95%CI -15.28 to -5.72) and greater differences between IF and cIF (p =0.003, Deltamedian = 3.50, 95%CI -6.1 to 13.1).
