5、cifieddiameterimpactsurface,tup,whichisrestrainedverticallyanddroppedfromvaryingheightstoproduceimpactenergiesovertherequiredrange.Electricalinspectionisusedtodetectresultantbreaksinthecoating.Impactresistanceisdeterminedastheamountofenergyrequiredtocausepenetra-tionofthecoatingfilm.4.Significancean
6、dUse4.1Theabilityofapipecoatingtoresistmechanicaldamageduringshipping,handling,andinstallationwilldependuponitsimpactresistance.Thistestmethodprovidesasystematicmeansforscreeningcoatingmaterialswithregardtothisproperty.5.Apparatus5.1Thistestmethodcanbesuccessfullyusedwithimpactapparatusconformingtot
7、hefollowingspecifications:5.1.1TupThetupshallbemadeupfromatupbodyandatupnosehavingacombined,fixedweightof1.361kg(3.00lbandshallbeusedoveradroprangeof0.61to1.22m(2to4ft.Withmostcoatings,a1.361-kg(3.00-lbtupdroppedthroughadistanceof914mm(3ftyieldssuitableresults.Thetupnoseshallhavea15.875-mm(5/8-in.he
8、misphericalhead.NOTE1FrequentreplacementofthetupnosecanbeavoidedifitiscutfromsteelcapableofbeinghardenedtoahardnessofRockwellC/45whileretaininganimpacttoughnessofatleast15ftlb(20.34J.BallbearingsconformingtoSAEGrade52100havealsobeenfoundsuitableforthispurpose.5.1.2DropTubeAtube1.52m(5ftlongshallbeus
9、edtocontainthetupandguideitduringfreefall.Thedroptubeshallbeconstructedofsteel,aluminum,oranyothersuitablyrigidmaterialandinternallysizedtoprovideaminimumoffrictiontothefallingtup.Ascaleshallbeattachedformeasuringtheheightofdroptothenearest2.54mm(0.10in.5.1.3SpecimenHolderThebaseplateoftheapparatuss

16、beginningthetest.8.PreliminaryMeasurements8.1MeasuretheappliedcoatingthicknessofeachspecimeninaccordancewithTestMethodG12.8.2Placetestspecimeninsampleholderandlightlyplacetuponsurfaceofthecoating.Adjusteitherthedroptubeortheattachedscalesothatthewingbolt(liftingpinisatthezeromarkofthescale.8.3Makeap
17、reliminarysetofimpactreadingstodeterminetheapproximatestartingpointforthetest.Thisshallbedonebystrikingthefirstspecimenfromaheightsufficienttocausefailureofthecoatingfilm.ConsideranypenetrationafailureifitisdetectablewithasuitableHolidayDetectorasspecifiedinTestMethodsGReducetheheightby50%an
18、dmakeasecondexploratorydropatafreshareaonthepipesurface.Continuetestinginthismanner,withthecorrespondingreductioninheightbetweendrops,untilthecoatingfailstobreak.NOTE3Choosetestlocationsatthespecimensurfaceinarandommannerandkeepatleasta76.2mm(3in.distancebetweenadjacentpointsofimpactandwithin38mm(I1
19、/2in.fromtheends.Choosingtestpointsinanyregularpatternwillbiastheexperimentandintroduceerrorintothetestresults.8.3.2Repeatthetestattheheightimmediatelyprecedingtheoccurrenceofthenonfailuretodetermineifanapproximatelevelforthemeanimpactstrengthhasbeenbracketed.Twosuccessivereversalsofcoatingperforman
